China's ban on ex-Philippine senator won't halt Manila's South China Sea stance: experts
The indefinite travel ban on Tolentino, a former Senate majority leader who lost his re-election bid in May, was announced by China's foreign ministry on Tuesday, a day after his term formally ended. The ministry accused Tolentino of 'egregious conduct on China-related issues'.

In response, Tolentino released a statement calling the sanction 'a badge of honour' and 'a testament to my unwavering commitment to protect our national interest and our people's dignity.'
'No foreign power can silence me or weaken my resolve to uphold our sovereignty,' he added.

The Chinese embassy in Manila had earlier accused Tolentino of playing 'the so-called China card to serve their political self-interests and boost their election prospects before the midterm elections. Such attempts are despicable and doomed to failure'.

South Korea revives inter-Korean pacts despite North's hostility
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung 's attempt in engagement with the North by unilaterally reviving some inter-Korean agreements is a long-term reconciliation strategy even as Pyongyang remains hostile towards Seoul, according to analysts. Lee ordered government ministries on Monday to prepare for a phased implementation of the suspended agreements, beginning with those that Seoul could act on independently. His latest call for trust-building came as the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercise began across South Korea , bringing together 18,000 South Korean troops and thousands of American soldiers for 11 days of joint drills from Monday until August 28. Long branded by Pyongyang as a rehearsal for invasion, the event has consistently spurred North Korea to engage in brinkmanship, such as missile launches and artillery drills. Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Lee said: 'It is better to win without fighting than to win by fighting. Even better than that is to create a peaceful state in which fighting is unnecessary – this is the most reliable security.' Moscow rejects deployment of troops from Nato countries in Ukraine
Russia has once again categorically rejected the deployment of troops from Nato countries in Ukraine amid US-led efforts to end the war. The United Kingdom has repeatedly suggested the possibility that foreign troops could be sent to Ukraine once a peace deal is reached. Bur Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said in Moscow that Britain was continuing to seek what she called 'an escalation' in the conflict with such plans and was pushing Nato members to a dangerous limit, from which a major global conflict was not far off. She was reacting to statements by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying he was prepared to deploy such troops. Ukraine is in favour of this as a security guarantee. 'We reiterate our repeatedly expressed position that we deny any scenarios that envisage the deployment of a military contingent to Ukraine with the participation of Nato states, which could lead to an uncontrollable escalation of the conflict with unpredictable consequences,' Zakharova added.
