Workers' Day is celebrated annually on May 1. Today holds significant historical importance in South Africa, particularly as it reflects the struggle for workers' rights and social justice, especially during the apartheid era.

Officially recognised as a public holiday since 1994, its origins in the late 1800s mark a period of labour movements and demands for better working conditions, fair wages and fundamental human rights.

Amanzimtoti residents push for attendance at peaceful march
A COMMUNITY united is one that sets aside its differences for a shared cause – today, residents of Ward 97 stood for the Amanzimtoti community at large to push for attendance in a peaceful march on June 7 against the homeless shelter being developed in Lower Illovo. Also read: Lower Illovo and neighbouring community hosts peaceful march Dalene Heath, of Toti Community Assist, an NPO instrumental in driving awareness of community meetings regarding the Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter, gathered her troupe of residents to Doonside, armed with placards and fliers. At the time of publishing, the residents were headed toward Winklespruit. Heath and co will be continuing to inform motorists and pedestrian passersby of the march. The march is set to commence at 07:30 from the R603 opposite Engen Bonamanzi Service Station, and it will end at the construction site. Dispersal time will be by 11:00. Sardine run: 25 KZN beaches currently closed for swimming
With the 2025 sardine run already underway, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) revealed that they have removed shark safety nets from the waters at 25 beaches along the south coast. The Sharks Board said that that melee of predators accompanying the sardine shoals was problematic, not just to the sardines but also to the Board itself. 'The shark nets that provide bather protection along the beaches take a heavy toll of sharks and dolphins if they are not lifted before the arrival of the Sardine Run,' it said, as per Business Tech. The eThekwini Municipality also announced on Monday, 2 June, that the public was now prohibited from swimming on KwaZulu-Natal's south coast beaches, due to the shark nets being removed. DNA results confirm the murder of Pretoria journalist
The South African Police Service has confirmed that the remains found in Rust De Winter last month, are of journalist, Aserie Ndlovu and his partner. Ndlovu and his girlfriend went missing on 18 February 2025. The bodies analysed for DNA were discovered by SAPS on 8 May 2025. 'The SAPS can now confirm that a DNA analysis has been concluded and has positively linked the remains to that of Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli', said national police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe. Mathe said the remains found were analysed and matched against samples taken from biological relatives of both Ndlovu and Mdhluli. SAPS has notified both families of the positive DNA match. The families have also been told that the results confirm that the remains found are of the missing couple. Mathe said the police were pleased to assist both families in finding closure. While the families come to terms with this new development, the case of the suspected killers of Ndlovu and Mdhluli continues before the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court. Seven suspects were arrested on 4 May 2025, over two months since the couple had been missing. The seven were charged with kidnapping, house robbery and possession of stolen property. Last month, a cross province operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police led SAPS to the seven suspects. They were questioned and subsequently arrested. 'The first suspect who is arrested, is according to investigations, the last to be in the company of the missing couple', said Mathe. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be that of the missing journalist', she continued. Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola has previously attributed the police successfully apprehending the suspects, to public participation. 'The social media community must also be appreciated for sharing the pictures of these suspects far and wide.
