Tang Jie-Ee Wei credit tactical switch for China Open win
KUALA LUMPUR: Chen Tang Jie believes staying calm and adapting to conditions were key as he and Toh Ee Wei pulled off a sensational comeback to reach the China Open quarter-finals on Thursday.
The world No. 4 mixed doubles pair were staring down the barrel at 20-14 in the opening game against China's Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying, before rattling off eight straight points to snatch it 22–20.
They carried that momentum into the second game to close out the match 21-17 and book their spot in the quarter-finals.
Tang Jie admitted they got off to a shaky start due to tricky court conditions — particularly the drift — and were too cautious early on.
"We're definitely happy with the win," said Tang Jie.
"We had a slow start. Our opponents played better than us at the beginning, but we're pleased we fought back and turned it around.
"In the first game, we were on the side with the wind. Because of that, we didn't dare to lift the shuttle, and they were more aggressive at the net and mid-court.
"But after the 11-point interval, we adjusted and found our rhythm."
The pair will now face another Chinese duo — world No. 9 Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui — in what is expected to be another tight battle.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei lead their head-to-head 2-0, having edged past the same pair in three gamea at both the China Masters and Hong Kong Open last year.
They are aiming for their third straight semi-final on the World Tour, after making the last four at the Indonesia Open and Japan Open in recent weeks.
Since reuniting earlier this year following a brief split, the Malaysians have rediscovered their chemistry, with consistency and results now following.
They'll also be hoping to recreate the magic of their China Open debut in 2023, when they stormed to the final before finishing runners-up.

Arif battles fever and flu before big stage in Paris
PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttler Wan Arif Wan Junaidi has been dealt a scare before the World Championships after coming down with fever and flu. Arif is preparing to make his debut with Yap Roy King in the world meet which starts next Monday in Paris. Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi said that the 23-year-old fell sick on Monday and could not train. 'Arif was down with fever and flu on Monday and could not train. He has returned to training today (Tuesday) but has still not fully recovered yet,' said Herry after overseeing the training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'He could not take part in one of the three sessions that I had planned. He could participate in the other two sessions. I am a bit worried as the world meet is quite close. 'I will keep monitoring his physical condition. Hopefully, he can return to his normal self quickly.' Arif and Roy King are scheduled to leave for Paris on Thursday (Aug 21) with the rest of the team. The pair, who are currently ranked No. 22 in the world, are hoping to impress in the prestigious meet. Roy King-Arif have been boosted by their maiden World Tour title win in the Macau Open earlier this month. The duo will open their campaign in Paris against Japan's world No. 34 Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura. A tough test against Thailand's world No. 12 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren awaits them in the second round if Roy King-Arif get past the Japanese pair. Meanwhile, Malaysia will also be represented in the men's doubles by world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 3 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (No. 7).

Herry's hopefuls
Top form: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun captured their maiden World Tour title in Macau earlier this month. PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi's experience could prove crucial to Malaysia's hopes of clinching gold in the World Championships which starts next Monday in Paris. In just seven months, Herry has superbly turned around the fortunes of the men's doubles shuttlers under him. Overall, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi have won five titles among them since the Indonesian replaced Tan Bin Shen as the men's doubles coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik have been the biggest winners after triumphing in the Asian Championships, Singapore Open and Thailand Open and also finished runners-up in the Malaysian Masters and China Open. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun impressively beat Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final in the home event while world No. 22 Roy King-Arif captured their maiden World Tour title in the Macau Open earlier this month. Can Herry guide one of the pairs to the coveted world title next? The Indonesian has produced world champions before when he was coaching in his homeland, most famously guiding Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan to three titles in 2013, 2015 and 2019. Herry is now looking to use his experience to guide one of Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun or Roy King-Arif to the crown. The 62-year-old said that small details could prove the difference between victory and defeat in Paris. 'In the world meet, there is very little separating the top men's pairs. Whichever pair is better prepared and take their opportunities well will win the title,' said Herry after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'I've been using video analysis to see the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents. 'It's important to analyse all our opponents' latest matches as pairs always can train and come up with new strategies. 'I've also been having discussions with our pairs and tweaking their strategies to help them gain an edge over rivals.' Malaysia have won the world title only once so far when Aaron-Wooi Yik memorably ended the country's long wait in 2022 in Tokyo. The pair will again be Malaysia's best bet for the gold. Aaron-Wooi Yik have received a bye in the first round and will open their campaign in the second round against either Scotland's Christopher Grimley-Mathew Grimley or Spain's Daniel Franco-Rodrigo Sanjurjo. A win could see Aaron-Wooi Yik play Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi in the third round. Roy King-Arif though need to overcome tricky pairs Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura from Japan and Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren in the first and second rounds respectively if they hope to meet Aaron-Wooi Yik. Wei Chong-Kai Wun will likely face Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior from France in the second round. Malaysia will also be represented by independent world No. 3 duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who will will play the winners of the match between Thailand's Peeratchai Sukphun-Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Americans Chen Zhi-yi-Presley Smith in the second round.

"The course always brings out the best in me, and I am looking forward to performing well this year and hopefully bringing home a second Macao Open crown,' said the globe-trotting Westwood, who counts two Malaysian Open victories among his 40-plus professional wins worldwide. Im, a two-time PGA Tour winner with three Presidents Cup appearances to his name, is looking forward to playing in Macao for the very first time. 'I am excited to be part of a very competitive field at the SJM Macao Open this year. I have heard excellent things about the SJM Macao Open and the city. "Fellow players have told me about the beautiful but challenging course at Macau Golf & Country Club, and I cannot wait to make my first trip to Macao a successful and enjoyable one,' said Im, whose best Major finish was tied second at the 2020 Masters Tournament. Joining Westwood and Im in the 144-player field will be defending champion Rattanon Wannasrichan of Thailand, who delivered a wire-to-wire victory in 2024 to claim his second Asian Tour title. The 30-year-old Wannasrichan will be hoping to emulate the achievement of Chinese golf trailblazer Zhang Lianwei, winner in 2001 and 2002, by successfully defending his title. 'I am delighted to announce my return to the SJM Macao Open. The tournament is one of my favorite weeks on the golfing calendar, and I am even more excited to be returning as the defending champion and to perform in front of the fans in Macao in October,' said Wannasrichan. Liang was the first Chinese player to reach the top 100 in the world ranking and in 2007 became the first Chinese player to top the Asian Tour Order of Merit. 'I have played the Macao Open several times over the last two decades. There's something about the course and the city that makes me want to return. "I love that everything is close by and convenient in Macao, and hospitality for the players is always world-class,' said Liang, whose mentor was Zhang as he transitioned onto the professional tours. Fans can also look forward to cheering on homegrown hopeful and six-time Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship participant, 22-year-old Kelvin Si Ngai. 'The SJM Macao Open always features a highly competitive field, and competing in my city allows me to test where my game's at against world class professionals. I hope to bring my best and give the home crowd something to cheer about,' said Si, who earned his 2025 Asian Tour card through Qualifying School. The SJM Macao Open Qualifier returns on September 8 at the Macau Golf & Country Club. Introduced last year, the qualifier aims to provide more opportunities and pathways for rising stars in the Greater Bay Area, by competing for spots into the main draw. See Lei, Acting Vice President of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, said: 'Since its inception in 1998, the Macao Open has grown to become a hallmark championship on the Asian Tour, and an event that has come to epitomize Macao's capability to host major international sporting events. "Leveraging the unique synergy between sports and tourism, we aim to attract athletes and tourists to Macao through this sporting platform, and to bolster Macao's reputation as a global center of tourism and leisure.' Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM commented: 'SJM has long been a dedicated supporter of both national and local sports development, and we remain firmly committed to advancing the integration of 'Sports + Tourism' in Macao. In 2023, we proudly assumed the title sponsorship of the Macao Open, supporting its revival through a three-year partnership. "Over the past two editions, we have worked closely with the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, IMG, the Asian Tour, and the Macau Golf Association to elevate the tournament and bring new vitality.
