‘Click it or Ticket' ahead of Memorial Day, Champaign Co. Sheriff says
Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said his office will be taking part in a nationwide high-visibility seatbelt enforcement initiative starting May 16 and going through Memorial Day. Deputies will be taking a 'no-excuses' approach to enforcement and will issue citations at both day and night.
'Seat belt use should be an automatic habit for everyone,' Sheriff Heuerman said. 'It's not just safe; it's the law. During this campaign, law enforcement agencies will be working together to ensure the message reaches all drivers and passengers. Buckling up is the simplest way to reduce injury or save a life in a crash.'

Heuerman added that the State of Illinois achieved a commendable 92.4% daytime seatbelt usage last year, but that means 7.6% of people still need to be reminded. While enforcement will happen at both day and night, a key focus of the 'Click it or Ticket' campaign is on nighttime enforcement, when crash data in Illinois indicated fatal crashes happen more.
Illinois enacted its seatbelt law 40 years ago, becoming the third state in the nation to require seatbelt use for all vehicle occupants. The law was upgraded in 2003, allowing police officers to pull over and ticket drivers solely for failing to buckle up, and that led to a significant increase in compliance.
Data shows seat belt usage surged from 16% in 1985 to 92.4% in 2024.
The 'Click It or Ticket' campaign is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

UPDATE: Springfield's 6th Street, Oberlin Ave reopen after crash
Update at 5:30 p.m. The intersection of 6th Street and Oberlin Avenue has reopened, SPD Lieutenant Tim Jenkins told WCIA. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A Springfield intersection is currently shut down due to a crash Thursday afternoon. The crash involved two vehicles at the intersection of 6th Street and Oberlin Avenue. Springfield Police Lieutenant Tim Jenkins told WCIA that while there are conflicting witness statements, the crash appears to have been caused by a car that was driving north on 6th Street at a high rate of speed. That car collided with another car that was crossing Oberlin Avenue, Jenkins said. 3rd teen arrested in Champaign shooting that left a 14-year-old with 'potentially life-threatening' injuries Three people were taken from the scene with injuries, Jenkins added. All of them are expected to be ok. The cars also crashed into a utility pole, but Jenkins said it was only an ancillary pole. CWLP crews have already disconnected the wires from it. The intersection of 6th and Oberlin will be closed for at least another hour while the crash scene is cleaned up, Jenkins said. ‘Injuries reported' in Monday morning crash on I-57 in Champaign
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — At least one person is hurt following a single-vehicle rollover crash on northbound I-57 in Champaign on Monday. The crash happened just before 5 a.m. between Interstates 72 and 74. Officials with the Illinois State Police said only one vehicle was involved, and it rolled over. Motorcyclist hospitalized with 'life threatening injuries after Champaign Co. crash 'Injuries are being reported,' State Police said. Winners, losers from Iowa NASCAR Cup race won by William Byron
NEWTON, Iowa — A look at the winners and losers from Sunday's Cup race at Iowa Speedway. WINNERS William Byron — After running out of fuel at Michigan and Indianapolis this summer and losing top-five finishes, Byron stretched his fuel — with the help of cautions — to win at Iowa Speedway. It's his first victory since the Daytona 500. Byron led a race-high 141 laps. He retook the points lead from teammate Chase Elliott. Byron leads Elliott by 18 points with three races left in the regular season. Chase Briscoe — His second-place finish is the third time in the last four races he's been a runner-up. Briscoe has placed first or second in four of the last seven races. Brad Keselowski — It wasn't the win he needed to make the playoffs, but his third-place finish was his seventh top-10 finish in the last 11 races. He had no top-10 results in the season's first 12 races. Sunday's result came after he started a season-best fifth. He scored a race-high 55 points after winning both stages and posting the fastest lap of the race. Dustin Long, Ryan Blaney — Last year's Iowa winner finished fourth and scored 49 points, second only to Brad Keselowski's total. Ryan Preece — He followed his fourth-place finish at Indianapolis by placing fifth at Iowa. He gained 19 points on Chris Buescher and trails his RFK Racing teammate by 23 points for the final playoff spot with three races left in the regular season.
