After a controversy erupted over a train with dilapidated and dirty coaches provided to ferry Border Security Force (BSF) troops from Tripura for deployment during the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday suspended four officials and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The development came a day after videos of the train surfaced online.
However, the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone had dismissed the allegations in a post on social media platform X.
In a statement issued by the railway ministry, Vaishnaw asserted that the dignity of the security forces is paramount and such negligence will not be tolerated at any level.
BSF troops deployed for Amarnath Yatra
About 1,200 BSF troops drawn from 13 companies were scheduled to board a special train on June 6 for Jammu Tawi from Udaipur in Tripura. The train had to make a few stops in between and collect troops from four locations in Tripura, Assam and West Bengal.
The train was made available to the BSF on June 9, and when they saw its "poor and unhygienic" condition, the jawans inspecting a coach recorded videos.
The troops were part of the additional deployment of central forces by the Union government for the annual Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3 in J&K.
After the videos went viral, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed commented on X: 'This is what happens when the government's entire focus is on PR for a few flashy trains, while the masses are forced to travel like animals.'
'Shame on @narendramodi and @AshwiniVaishnaw for providing a filthy train - full of dirt, cockroaches, and broken seats - for our BSF soldiers heading for Amarnath Yatra duty,' she added.
Three senior section engineers and a coaching depot officer of Alipurduar Rail Division have been suspended by the railway minister, the statement said.

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday exhorted students to protect public property, saying these are collective assets and damaging them harm the nation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah Thursday said that the temperature in the Air India plane which crashed in Ahmedabad was so high due to burning fuel that there was no chance to save people. 'There was 1.25 lakh litre of fuel inside the plane and it caught fire so it was impossible to save anyone,' Shah said, adding that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has initiated a probe. Shah was speaking hours after visiting the aircraft crash site and the hospital where the victims are admitted, On Thursday afternoon, after coming to know about the incident, Shah first made a call to the Gujarat Chief Minister, their Home Minister, Civil Aviation department and officials of the civil department. Later in the evening, he left for Ahmedabad and visited the aircraft crash site as well the hospital where victims were taken. 'The number of those killed will be officially released by the authorities after completing the DNA test and identification of the victims. The DNA sampling process for relatives who have reached the incident site will be completed within the next two–three hours. Families whose relatives are abroad have already been informed, and their DNA samples will be taken upon arrival,' Shah said. 'The Gujarat's Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) will jointly complete the DNA testing in the shortest possible time, after which the bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their families,' he added. J-K Police chief reviews arrangements for paramilitary forces to be deployed for Amarnath Yatra

The coordinating officers of the CAPF shared their feedback on the administrative arrangements at various camping sites and transit locations. The senior officers of CAPF also expressed their satisfaction with the administrative and transportation arrangements for the inducted companies, the spokesperson said. He said the DGP issued directives for the smooth induction of CAPF companies and emphasised that district heads should ensure proper arrangements for incoming units and their efficient ground deployment. Prabhat stressed the need for a high level of coordination among all forces and instructed that an effective inter-agency coordination mechanism be established.
