'We are still in the fight' - just how bad does it look for Leicester?
Before Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2016, they pulled off one of the greatest of great escapes to avoid relegation to the Championship.A repeat of that looks very unlikely this time.Indeed their current situation is not as precarious. Back in 2014-15 they were rooted to the foot of the table for much of the season, only climbing off it in April as a run of seven wins from their final nine games took them to unexpected safety.But this Leicester team looks barely capable of winning one game, let alone going on a run of victories, as Thursday's 2-0 loss to West Ham left them five points adrift of safety."We are going to get up again," vowed boss Ruud van Nistelrooy after the game."We are still in this fight, mathematically we are there and we keep fighting as long as we can. "It must be clear that the fight was only one half today and that is not enough."
'Not even close to scoring' - Leicester's concerning statistics
Leicester sacked Steve Cooper on 24 November after a run of just 12 league games, but the change has not had anywhere near the impact the club would have hoped and the statistics make for concerning reading:The Foxes have lost 11 of their past 12 Premier League games (W1).In his 14 games in charge, Van Nistelrooy has picked up just seven points, three fewer than previous Foxes boss Cooper managed this season (10 in 12 games).No side has conceded more own-goals in the Premier League this season than Leicester City (three, level with West Ham and Wolves).Leicester have also failed to score in each of their past four Premier League games, last doing so in February 2017 (a run of six).On Leicester's struggles to score, Van Nistelrooy added: "If you play like this in the first half you are not going to score. We were not even close to scoring. "In the second half we were much closer to score. At least you give yourself an opportunity."
'I think they are gone' - but can Leicester escape?
In Leicester's favour, however, is time. A five-point deficit is not insurmountable and they have 11 league games left - that's 33 points to play for.But their upcoming run of fixtures look tough with their next four games being trips to Chelsea and Manchester City and home matches against Manchester United and Newcastle.Leicester defender Wout Faes says the players still believe they can stay up."Of course, there has to be belief," the Belgian said."Weekend after weekend the games count down. I don't think we have to think too much about going forward. We just have to think game by game and we have to start winning very soon because the games are counting down."Those who have watched some of their recent games, however, are not so optimistic.Former Leicester midfielder Neil Lennon said on TNT Sports: "I hate to say it about any group of players but it is really hard to make a case for them on what we have seen. "West Ham didn't have to be anywhere near their best to win the game comfortably. There was zero quality, zero belief and the game just seemed to pass them by.""I think they are gone," added former Chelsea forward Joe Cole. "I think them and Southampton are gone. "How do you get these players to show some kind of spark from now to the end of the season?"

Arsenal have sanctioned the departure Marquinhos, who will join Brazilian side Cruzeiro, three years after his transfer was ridiculed by those back in South America Arsenal have offloaded Marquinhos with the forward going back to Brazil - three years after his signing was labelled a "scandal" by those back in South America. The 22-year-old joined from Sao Paulo and is now heading back to the Brazilian Serie A with Cruzeiro in a £2.5m move. His appearances were few and far between and he ended up playing just six times in all competitions, scoring the once. Marquinhos spent much of his time out on loan with spells at Norwich City, Nantes, Fluminense and Cruzeiro during his time on Arsenal's books and has now made his move to Brazil a permanent one after failing to make the grade at the Emirates. An Arsenal statement said: "Marquinhos has moved to Brazilian Serie A side Cruzeiro in a permanent transfer." It added: "Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Marquinhos for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future." He cost Arsenal just €3million in compensation fees when he originally moved as the Premier League side took advantage of his deal expiring that summer. Marquinhos came through the youth system at Sao Paulo and was tipped to have a major impact with several of the country's pundit identifying him as a talent in his teenage years. They were therefore left stunned that his contract was allowed to wind down, which meant he was able to leave for such a minor fee. World Cup winner Vampeta was among those and claimed it was "absurd". He said: "Marquinhos' business. They're going to lose Marquinhos to Arsenal for €3m. I don't know if you remember that I used to say I watched Audax's academy games, Marquinhos in the under-15… he used to already make the difference. I said here on the show, 'There's an U-15 at Sao Paulo, Marquinhos'… Now he's going to leave on a silver platter." TV Host Thiago Asmar claimed that Marquinhos should be worth at least €10-15m as he said it was a "scandal" for him to be allowed to depart for such a minimal amount. Former Arsenal chief Edu claimed that Marquinhos was "a player for the future" but Mikel Arteta was never able to unlock his potential. The Brazilian had a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order and opportunities ultimately never came his way. The Gunners are looking to further bolster their frontline this summer with wide forwards on their shortlist. They've been linked with the likes if Nico Williams, who has become a leading light at Athletic Bilbao and could be tempted by a move to the Premier League.

Wrexham 'in talks with outgoing Leicester star on free transfer' as Welsh club eye up Premier League additions this summer
Wrexham are in talks to sign Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward on a free transfer following his departure from Leicester City, according to a report. The 31-year-old will leave the King Power Stadium when his deal expires at the end of the season. He has attracted the interest of the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club. Ward made just five appearances in all competitions for the Foxes last term as the side were relegated to the Championship. A move to Wrexham, who will be playing in the second tier next term after three successive promotions, will see Ward return to the club where he came through as a youngster, though he never made a senior appearance for the side. According to Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett, the Welshman is in negotiations with the club over a move. Wrexham are keen to add Premier League quality to their ranks this summer and have been linked with the likes of Ben Davies, Danny Ings and Tom Cairney. On Sunday, Mail Sport reported that the side are still interested in signing Davies despite Tottenham exercising their option to extend the defender's contract by 12 months at the weekend. Davies has been a Spurs player since 2014 and he featured in 28 games under Ange Postecoglou last season, despite not being a member of the manager's first-choice XI. Davies has played 358 games for Tottenham in total, operating both as a left back and a central defender. Davies recently saw his contract extended until June 2026, which means Wrexham would likely need to pay Spurs a modest transfer fee to land him this summer. Tottenham's willingness to let Davies leave could depend on whether or not they are successful in their attempts to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson looks set for a busy summer following his side's promotion from League One to the Championship. Davies has never played below the top tier of English football, having been a Premier League player for his entire club career to date. The 32-year-old made 71 Premier League appearances for Swansea between 2012 and 2014. He has played a further 242 Premier League games for Spurs.

Spurs close in on Thomas Frank after making official approach to Brentford
Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday, despite Europa League success, and quickly set their sights on Frank – who has gained admirers for his work over an impressive seven-year period at the west London club. After positive initial talks over the weekend, confidence started to grow on Monday morning that Frank would be the man to replace Postecoglou and Tottenham have now entered discussions with Brentford, PA understands. Brentford are eager to hold out for Frank's release clause, but they have started talks with Spurs over a compensation package which would soften the blow of losing the highly-rated Dane. The 51-year-old would take over a Spurs side which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. Poor domestic form during the 2024-25 season cost Postecoglou his job as the Spurs board was forced to make 'one of the toughest decisions' it has had to make in dismissing the head coach who ended a 17-year trophy drought. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,' a club statement on Friday read. PA understands Tottenham have also relieved coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo of their duties. Ryan Mason left his role as Spurs first-team coach last week to take over as West Brom boss, which opens the door for Frank to bring in some of his own staff – with current Brentford assistant Claus Norgaard a long-term ally. PA understands another departure from Spurs this summer will be Scott Munn, who was made chief football officer at the club in 2023. Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has remained in post and is set to renew allegiances with compatriot Frank. Frank and Lange worked together at Danish club Lyngby before they both made their marks in the Premier League. Lange attempted to bring Frank to Aston Villa in 2022 when he worked at the midlands outfit. Former Brondby boss Frank has developed a strong reputation in English football since he took over Brentford, with his tactical nous and man-management skills often lauded by rival managers and pundits. After Frank guided Brentford to promotion in 2021, he quickly enabled them to compete strongly in the Premier League despite a modest budget and has been linked to a number of high-profile vacancies in recent years.
