'Leicester need to make a decision quickly'
Former Leicester City midfielder Dean Hammond says decisions on the Foxes' future need to be made quickly to provide clarity for told BBC Radio Leicester's When You're Smiling podcast: "The hardest thing in football is to make decisions, and I think the quicker you can make them, the better, because it gives everyone a bit of clarity and a bit of understanding and puts everyone at ease because they know what's happening and what's expected."Who's going to lead the team next season would be the biggest decision for me, because until it's decided whether Ruud van Nistelrooy stays or a new manager comes in, then I'm not sure how you plan."It's so important to have that person in place to start putting forward the direction of the football club for next season."The more time you get with the players you're going to work with for the majority of the season, the better time you're going to have to implement your playing style. "You need to get to know players. You need to build relationship with players. New players need to come in and settle. They need to understand how they're going to play and what is expected."Leicester City does not feel like a stable club in this moment, and I wonder, with that in mind, how important this summer overall really is for Leicester City, not just for now and for next season, but for what the club want to achieve in the next maybe five to 10 years."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds here

Van Nistelrooy quitting club after calling out board put him back to square one
Ruud van Nistelrooy is still in the dark over his future as Leicester manager and is yet to have a conversation with the board, echoing the situation which saw him quit his former club Ruud van Nistelrooy's managerial tenure at Leicester City is hanging in the balance as he seeks clarity over his future. It is a strikingly similar situation to the one the Dutchman experienced at PSV Eindhoven, where he quit after telling players and staff he no longer felt 'supported' by the club. History could very much repeat itself for the Foxes boss, who is still yet to receive any indication whether he will be kept on by the club going into next season. Leicester ended a dismal campaign with a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth last weekend as they fell back into the Championship. But current boss Van Nistelrooy says he is unable to plan for next season in the second tier and make signings because he hasn't had a conversation with the board about the club's plans. The 48-year-old said recently that whether he remains in charge 'depends on how the conversations go'. And when quizzed about his plans for the upcoming season, Van Nistelrooy confessed: 'I still have to wait at least to have a conversation on a future together or not. Before that, you cannot start planning. I need to speak to be able to get a feeling on hopes. It's all dependent on that.' Van Nistelrooy's state of limbo has fuelled speculation that he may be replaced by Russell Martin, formerly of Southampton, as the Foxes look for a manager with a prior history of clinching promotion to the Premier League. Van Nistelrooy has endured a disastrous tenure since replacing Steve Cooper at the King Power Stadium in late November, which saw their relegation to the Championship confirmed in April. The Foxes were one point clear of the relegation zone at the time of his appointment but a dreadful run of form followed, which saw them lose a whopping 16 games from 18 played between December and February. And it's not the first time Van Nistelrooy has found himself at odds with club bosses. The Manchester United legend quit his old job as PSV boss in May 2023 over a lack of support from the Dutch giants just a year after taking charge of the senior side. It came as somewhat of a surprise, given that he'd won a Johan Cruyff Shield and a TOTO KNVB Beker, while also looking set to finish in second place in the Eredivisie. PSV at the time alluded to his falling out with the board, releasing a statement, which read: "Van Nistelrooy told the first-team squad and coaching staff that he would be stepping down with immediate effect, due to a lack of support within the club. "PSV regrets his decision and is grateful to him for winning the Johan Cruijff Shield and the Dutch Cup, and hopes to finish the season in second place." Van Nistelrooy's next job came when he was appointed as Erik ten Hag's assistant ahead of the 2024/25 season. After a poor start to the campaign led to Ten Hag's dismissal, Van Nistelrooy took over in an interim capacity. The former Netherlands striker, however, was left feeling "disappointed" and "hurt" after being told to pack his bags by United's incoming boss, Ruben Amorim, who brought his own backroom team with him. Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy's potential successor, Martin, was sacked by the Saints in December and just 16 games into the Premier League season, having overseen an astonishing 13 defeats. Martin has also been touted for the vacant managerial position at Rangers.

QuickCheck: Did Man Utd's legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy score his first-ever goal for the club in Malaysia?
AS one of biggest and most successful football clubs in history, Manchester United has a massive global fan base. However, not every fan has had the opportunity to watch their favourite team play a game live in person. That's the reason why the friendly matches the team plays in between seasons are a genuine treat for loyal fans – which is especially true in Malaysia. That said, is it true that the club's legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his first-ever goal in club colours right here in Malaysia? Verdict: TRUE Yes, van Nistelrooy – whom some may say is the most clinical striker to play for the club – made his Manchester United debut at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in a pre-season friendly against a Malaysian selection back in June 2001. The Dutch striker opened his scoring account for the Red Devils with a brace – the first in the 7th minute when he put the ball past the goalkeeper after a clever little back-heeled pass from Dwight Yorke. His second goal – and the third for the match – came in the 36th minute when club captain Roy Keane put him through with only the keeper to beat, and he showed his class with a neat little chip to put the ball into the net. The game was a real treat for the club's fans in Malaysia. It was also where Argentinian playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron made his debut and featured a strong line-up with legends such as Ryan Giggs, David Beckham (who scored the second goal), Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the starting 11. Manchester United won the match with a final 6-0 score. Van Nistelrooy went on to score 150 goals in 219 appearances for Manchester United. Although his two goals – this being a friendly match – did not count towards his final goal tally, Malaysian fans will always have the fond memory of witnessing the start of his legendary stint with the club. QuickCheck: Is May 28 the first time Manchester United has played in Malaysia?
FOOTBALL fans may be buzzing with excitement as Manchester United is set to play in Malaysia. However, some are wondering if this marks the first time the iconic club has visited the country. Is it true that today, Wednesday May 28, is the first time Manchester United is playing in Malaysia? Verdict: FALSE No, this is not the first time Manchester United have played a game in Malaysia. In fact, the upcoming match against the Asean All-Stars at Bukit Jalil National Stadium will mark their return after a 16-year absence. Manchester United has visited Malaysia on pre-season tours multiple times. One notable visit was in July 2001, when they played a Malaysian Select XI at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Manchester United secured a dominant 6-0 victory, with Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring twice, and David Beckham, Andy Cole (two goals) and Luke Chadwick also getting on the scoresheet. This match was a major event, drawing thousands of enthusiastic fans to the stadium, eager to see their favorite stars, such as Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Juan Sebastian Veron, in action. Manchester United returned to Malaysia in July 2009 for another pre-season tour, playing the Malaysia XI in two matches at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. In the first match on July 18, Manchester United won 3-2. Wayne Rooney and Nani put United ahead, but Mohd Amri Yahyah scored twice for Malaysia XI, including a memorable equaliser in the second half, before Michael Owen netted a late winner for United. Two days later, on July 20, United again defeated Malaysia XI, this time with a 2-0 scoreline, the goals coming from Federico Macheda and Michael Owen. Today's match is highly anticipated, with over 60,000 tickets already sold, demonstrating the enduring passion of Malaysian fans for Manchester United. This match, part of the Maybank Challenge Cup, will further solidify the club's long-standing connection with its Asian fanbase. 'An incredible man, but that doesn't make you a great manager'
Former Leicester goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell believes the club's players need a different style of management to what Ruud van Nistelrooy offers. Speaking on BBC Radio Leicester's 'When You're Smiling' podcast, Stowell said he believes the Dutch boss was more of a friend than a coach to players. He said: "It feels different this season. It was almost doomed to fail early on, and just the manner in which they've gone down is disappointing. "Two years ago under Brendan Rodgers, that was a shock to end up going down. I wouldn't say there was inevitability about this team going down though. "Who knows what would have happened if we didn't sack Steve Cooper. For me, he came with baggage but that shouldn't be the case. "There was no reason for me to think Leicester were going down and they had to sack Cooper. "I've met Ruud van Nistelrooy and he's a lovely bloke. But I get the feeling he was the players' friend rather than the players' coach. "I feel they needed someone in there that would drive them rather than befriend them. "He is an incredible man, but that doesn't make you a great manager." Listen to the full podcast here
