Fire and ice theme planned for fireworks display
The Winter Fireworks Spectacular will bring some magic back to New Brighton beach in July.
The free vent, produced by Christchurch City Council, will take place on Saturday, July 5, in the middle weekend of the winter school holidays.
City council events and arts manager Lucy Blackmore said the theme 'Fire and Ice' will set the tone for an electrifying soundtrack to sync with the fireworks display, featuring songs like Ice, Ice, Baby by Vanilla Ice and The Doors' Light My Fire.
'The fireworks will kick off from the New Brighton Pier at 7.30pm, featuring new special effects,' says Blackmore.
'It'll be the same spectacular show audiences know and love, but with some exciting new elements.'
A range of food vendors will offer dinner, snacks and drinks in the car park north of the pier on Marine Pde from 5.30pm to 8pm.
The event will also have a base with on-theme entertainment.
'It's a fantastic community event that brings people of all ages together to enjoy the magic of winter by the beach,' said Blackmore.
'We're expecting a great turnout again this year, with around 20,000 people likely to attend – so gather your friends and whānau and come down early to get a good spot.'

Tadpole reincarnated for Go Live Festival
Another well-known Kiwi rock band has been added to the Go Live Festival line-up in Christchurch. Tadpole was a mainstay of the early 2000s New Zealand music scene, with their triple-platinum debut album The Buddhafinger hitting No 2 on the NZ Music Charts. The Auckland-based band will play in Ōtautahi for the festival on August 23. They are one of 13 acts to play across four stages at the Christchurch Town Hall. "This is our second show in Christchurch with our new singer Lauren Marshall, and we'll be playing all the well-known hits with some brand-new ones," said Tadpole drummer Dean Lawton. Marshall joined Tadpole in 2024 as the band reformed with core members Dean Lawton, Chris Yong on guitar, Shannon Brown on bass and DJ Kritikl, who had a brief stint with the band in 2000. The line-up, previously fronted by Renee Brennan, has changed several times since the band was formed in 1994 and disbanded in 2006. "To be honest, I thought it would have been really hard reconnecting as a band and adding a new member after 20 years, but for some reason it feels like we never stopped! Lauren just fits in like she's been there the whole time,' Lawton says. The resurgence of the band began in 2022 with the release of The Tadpole Collection (1994–2006) – all three Tadpole albums plus Remains of the Day, a collection of 12 previously unreleased, remastered tracks. Alliance Party Launches First Campaign In Over A Decade
Tom Roud, candidate for the revitalised Alliance Party, is launching his campaign for Christchurch City Council Friday 4 July with a fundraising event at local venue Space Academy, starting 7.30pm. The Alliance Party announced its return to active electioneering in early June to endorse Tom Roud for Christchurch City Council. Alliance Party President Victor Billot says 'Tom, along with other younger people, saw the Alliance as a good fit for the politics they wanted to see in action and we agreed.' Mr Billot will be speaking at the launch event., 'we are very happy to have such a high quality candidate who is promoting the Alliance's ambitious social democratic alternative, tailored for local government," he said. Mr Roud, a librarian who plays in a local band in his spare time, says his guiding principle is an egalitarian politics that works for working people. 'We don't hear enough from working people and their families. To be a great place to live, Christchurch has to be a great place for everyone to live. Good jobs, affordable housing, no asset sales along with the expansion of public assets, and public spending that improves the lives of ordinary Kiwis.' Mr Roud said he is providing an aspirational alternative that would motivate voters, including increasing the turnout of younger voters and renters. 'This ward is almost 70% renters, and the community here is considerably younger than the city average. Young workers living in the city centre deserve strong representation', he says. His campaign launch, set for the same day nominations open, includes performances from high profile Christchurch acts Pickle Darling, This Dog, and The Eastern. 'Christchurch can become a cultural powerhouse for live music, and that's part of what motivated my campaign. I am grateful to have amazing local talent playing at my campaign launch', he says.

Get set for Christchurch's Winter Fireworks Spectacular
Thousands of people are expected to flock to New Brighton Beach for Christchurch City Council's annual fireworks show on Saturday night. There will be entertainment from 5.30pm to 8pm on July 5 with the Winter Fireworks Spectacular set to light up the sky on New Brighton Pier at 7.30pm to a "fire and ice" themed soundtrack. A school holidays favourite, the free event features family-friendly entertainment and a range of food vendors at the event zone in the car park north of the pier. Bus services Free bus rides after the event are again being offered on the regular route 5 (bound for Hornby or Rolleston) and Route 60 (bound for Hillmorton) services departing from the Oram Ave bus stop. Additional buses on Oram Ave will take the 5 and 60 routes as far as the Bus Interchange. The free fares apply from 8pm to 8.30pm. Park and ride service There will also be a park and ride bus service, labelled 'Fireworks', operating before the event outside Eastgate Mall between 5pm and 6.40pm. Normal bus fares apply. Buses will depart every 10 minutes, leaving from a temporary stop on Russell Street. Those travelling by car are permitted to park behind The Warehouse in the mall car park. Carpooling is encouraged. For a free return trip to Eastgate, take a Route 5 bus bound for the bus interchange from Oram Avenue between 8pm and 8.30pm. For more information about bus services, visit or call (03) 366 88 55. Road access and parking To help manage traffic in the area, there will be road closures, parking restrictions, and one-way traffic on designated streets in New Brighton between 4pm and 9.30pm. Please see the map below. Mobility parking is available to people with an official mobility sticker at the carpark south of the pier. Approach Marine Parade via Bridge Street for the easiest access. Bike racks will be available on Marine Parade near the playground. What not to bring Please don't bring your pet to the event or your own fireworks or drones. The New Brighton carpark event zone is also smoke/vape-free, and an alcohol ban in the area includes any open bottles in the public space or private vehicles. Postponement If bad weather forces the postponement of the fireworks, it will be announced on the What's On and Facebook event pages, the Council Facebook page, and the What's On Christchurch Facebook page. The postponement date is Sunday, July 6.
