Marchand grabs gold; McIntosh continues flawless run

SINGAPORE, July 31, (AP): Léon Marchand of France clinched gold in the 200-meter individual medley at the swimming world championships, headlining a podium that carried a distinct Texas connection.
Marchand, American Shaine Casas (silver), and Hungary's Hubert Kós (bronze) all train under legendary coach Bob Bowman at the University of Texas in Austin – the same coach who guided Michael Phelps to Olympic greatness.
Just 24 hours after shattering the world record in the semifinals with a time of 1:52.69, Marchand nearly repeated the feat in the final, clocking 1:53.68 — still well under the previous world best of 1:54.00 set by American Ryan Lochte in 2011.
'It was a bit tough today, but it was great,' Marchand said. 'I know Shaine always goes out super fast, so I knew I couldn't be far off. It was a battle to the end, and that was cool for me.'
Marchand, who won four individual Olympic titles in Paris last year, is contesting only two individual events in Singapore. He already holds the 400 IM world record (4:02.50) from the 2023 worlds and hinted at another possible record attempt in that event on Sunday, the final day of competition.
'That's still a whole new challenge,' Marchand said. 'I know I've gained a lot of power, but I'm not sure it makes a big difference over the 400. We'll see.'
Canada's Summer McIntosh continued her stellar run, winning the women's 200-meter butterfly in 2:01.99 – the second-fastest time in history. She was on world-record pace through 150 meters, but faded slightly over the final stretch. The current record of 2:01.81 was set by Liu Zige of China in 2009 during the super-suit era.
'My coach and I had one goal – to break the world record,' McIntosh said, visibly disappointed. 'That's what I've been training for. I missed it by that little and messed up the last 15 meters. I didn't reach my goal today.'
Still, it was McIntosh's third gold of the meet. American Regan Smith earned silver (2:04.99), followed by Australia's Elizabeth Dekkers (2:06.12). China's 12-year-old sensation Yu Zidi finished fourth (2:06.43) – her second fourth-place finish of the championships. McIntosh is set to begin training with Bowman in Texas this fall.

Canada teenager Mboko stuns top-seeded Gauff in Montreal

Rybakina books quarter-final clash with Kostyuk MONTREAL: Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko took down top-seeded American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday, thrilling the home crowd as she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal. The 18-year-old wild card saved all four break points she faced, and broke reigning French Open champion Gauff three times on the way to a comprehensive victory in just 62 minutes. 'I don't even know what to say still, I was kind of shocked about it all,' said Mboko, adding that the support of the home crowd had buoyed her late in the second set. 'I just remember in the last game when I was up 5-4, the crowd kind of started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy,' she said. 'I kind of used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself up a little bit more. 'I think it helped me tremendously, especially in the last game, since they were so encouraging me. It was just amazing.' Mboko started the season ranked 333rd in the world and has worked her way up to 85 but the win over Gauff - who she took to three sets in Rome in May - is the biggest win of her career. 'Playing Coco is obviously never easy. She's number two in the world, and it has been such a great opportunity for me to play against someone like her,' Mboko said. 'I was just happy I kept my composure today and I pulled it through.' Gauff, who had a combined 37 double faults as she struggled through her first two matches, was caught flat-footed as the Canadian teen raced through the first set in 25 minutes. Gauff buckled down in the second, but she was unable to convert three break chances in the seventh game - coming up short on a drop shot and smacking a forehand into the net on the first two. She gained anther chance only to hit a service return long, then flew a volley wide to give Mboko a game point, duly converted when Gauff fired a forehand long. Down 15-30 in the ninth game, Mboko leveled at 30-30 with a blistering backhand, then closed out the hold for a 5-4 lead. Serving to stay in the match, Gauff fell in a quick 0-30 hole and double-faulted to give Mboko a match point, on which the American hit a backhand into the net. 'She played a really great match, that's basically it,' Gauff said. 'I haven't played the best in this tournament, so I knew that it would be tough. I just felt like I could do better today, but I also knew that if I took my foot off the gas a little bit that she would take advantage of those moments, and she did.' Mboko will next play Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who won a see-saw battle with China's Zhu Lin 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. Rybakina hangs on Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina out-lasted Dayana Yastremska 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to book a quarter-final clash with Marta Kostyuk. Kazakhstan's Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion who won her first title in more than a year at Strasbourg in May, was slowed by nine double faults. But she ultimately had enough to get past Ukraine's Yastremska, breaking her twice in the third set and sealing it on her fourth match point. She'll face another Ukrainian in Kostyuk, who came from behind to beat American McCartney Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. — AFP

Kuwait faces urgent review after poor performance at the Arab Basketball Championship

MANAMA, Aug 3: Kuwait suffered its sixth loss, falling 74-89 to Bahrain in the final round of the 26th Arab Basketball Championship held in Manama. This result placed Kuwait seventh and last in the tournament. This outcome calls for a serious assessment by the Kuwait Basketball Association's officials, a complete overhaul of the training programs, and addressing key weaknesses. Creating the right environment and properly preparing the team is essential for achieving better results in future competitions. Kuwait's squad featured many young players competing at this level for the first time. Injuries to key players Adel Al-Saeed and Hussein Ashkanani also affected the team's performance. However, these factors do not fully explain the disappointing results and overall low standard of play. Most other teams participated with reserve or Olympic squads but still managed to deliver competitive performances and win at least one game. In contrast, Kuwait lost all its matches and failed to show convincing efforts on the court. The impact of Serbian coach Oliver Kostic and his assistant Khaled Al-Qallaf was noticeably missing, despite hopes for improvement following promising performances in previous international events. Algeria was crowned champion after beating Egypt 78-70. Tunisia secured second place by defeating Qatar 79-72. Algeria finished undefeated with six wins, Tunisia came in second, and the UAE earned a notable third place. Bahrain placed fourth, Egypt fifth, Qatar sixth, while Kuwait ended at the bottom of the standings.
