Power bills got you sweating? Stay warm without spending a fortune
As I write this on a frosty Melbourne morning, the mercury has dipped below 3 degrees, prompting the ritualistic donning of black puffer jackets and a sharp spike in the number of people working from home. I've heard it's also quite cold in Sydney but, frankly, whatever goes on north of the Murray River is none of my business.
Scientists have also discovered that cold weather is often associated with thoughts such as 'oh my god I'm never going to be warm again' and 'can I do everything I need to get do today from bed?' It can also see many of us crank our heating up to ridiculous levels, which is great for short-term relief but bad from a power bill perspective.
This is especially problematic for those of us with large or poorly insulated houses (so, basically, all of us, as 80 per cent of Australian houses have a two star or less energy rating).
What's the problem?
To make matters worse, energy prices are on the up. Power prices are set to rise by up to 9.7 per cent in NSW and 5 per cent in Victoria from July 1, after the market regulator announced its latest round of annual price setting. These rises are just an estimate too, as calculations by Canstar show that over the past six years, 67 per cent of the actual prices ended up higher than the proposed price. All in all, it's shaping up as a bad year to be cold.
What you can do about it
So if the chill is creeping a little too much for your liking (and it's only June!), here are some moves you can make:
Shop around: You can put on as many jumpers as you like, or stack on three more blankets, but nothing will save you as much money as jumping ship to a new energy retailer. Comparison expert at iSelect, Sophie Ryan, says everyone should get on the front foot now and check how your current energy offer stacks up – including what your service and supply fees are. 'While power prices may be higher across the board and will increase further for many homes from July 1, there are still differences between retailers and plans, and even a small price difference could make a big difference to a quarterly energy bill,' she says. It's a common misconception (and something that I ramble on about all the time) that loyalty pays, but it doesn't. Your energy provider owes you nothing, and vice versa, so if another one is offering a better deal (even if it's just a one-off for new customers), go get it. The free ride could soon be over for electric vehicle owners with the Australian Government confirming it's eyeing a national road-user charge. As petrol and diesel cars disappear from the roads, senior Labor ministers admit it's 'no secret' EV drivers may soon face new fees to help pay for Australia's crumbling infrastructure amid speculation it's on the agenda at next week's economic reform roundtable. Tanya Plibersek said the measure was being considered as declining numbers of petrol and diesel vehicles eroded Australia's fuel excise revenue — a major source of road funding. 'It's no secret that as the number of petrol vehicles and diesel vehicles goes down, the take from fuel excise decreases. That means less money for building and maintaining roads. So, the States and Territories have been looking at this for some time,' she said. She stressed any charge 'wouldn't be happening tomorrow' but said it was important to consider long-term measures to secure road funding. 'I'm sure the Treasurer will be very interested in the discussion,' she said. Fellow frontbencher Murray Watt downplayed the discussions. 'It's no secret that we've said previously we'll work with the states and territories on this matter,' Watt said. Senator Watt said it was too 'premature' to say when the charge would be enforced: 'I wouldn't want to jump ahead of any sort of decision-making with that'. 'You'd be aware that there was a High Court decision which really raised this issue front and centre and ever since then, we've been working with the states and territories,' he added. Victoria had tried to implement a State-based road-user charge in 2021 but the proposal was struck down in 2023 by the High Court of Australia. Identifying that it needs to be introduced at a Federal level the Albanese Government is working on a scheme of its own. Federal Labor support for the charge came as Treasurer Jim Chalmers attended an Infrastructure Partnerships Australia-hosted road-user charging forum alongside industry members and public servants in Sydney on Monday. IPA chief executive Adrian Dwyer told the ABC momentum was growing to introduce a distance-based charge for EV owners and said it would have little impact on EV adoption. Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce said he supported EV drivers paying their fair share. 'They definitely should, 100 per cent they should,' Mr Joyce said. Mr Joyce said current system unfairly benefitted city drivers who were less likely to use combustion-powered vehicles than those in the regions. 'I have a sense there's a lot of EVs in Tanya's electorate. We out here are overwhelmingly combustion engines because… it's different terrain and we feel that we're paying the excise that other people in the inner city are getting away with,' he said. Opposition leader Sussan Ley accused the Albanese Government of convening the three-day roundtable next week to 'work out how they can levy more taxes on Australians' using the EV charge as an example. 'They're getting ready for their productivity roundtable. It's three days of working out how they can levy more taxes on Australians. We're watching them closely,' she told 4GB radio on Monday. Roads Australia chief executive Ehssan Veiszadeh was among guests at the Sydney forum and welcomed the charge, saying there needed to be a fair, transparent and future-ready fee system. 'Fuel excise revenue is in terminal decline. Without reform, we risk a future where our roads are underfunded, unsafe, and unable to support the demands of a growing population,' Mr Veiszadeh said. 'We're not just talking about replacing a tax — we're talking about rebuilding equity in how we fund the roads Australians rely on every day,' Mr Veiszadeh said. Australian Automobile Association managing director Michael Bradley was also in attendance. Other nations, including New Zealand, have already implemented all road user charge.

New data reveals the amount of affordable housing across Australia is collapsing, leaving home ownership out of reach for many Aussies
An expert has warned that Sydney could run out of affordable housing by 2027 after new data revealed the dire strait that the Australian property market is in. The data from real estate group Ray White tracked properties sold over the last decade across the capital cities, showing that across the east coast the number of properties that could be considered affordable is collapsing. Affordable housing is defined in the research as housing that is less than or equal to $750,000. Sydney was leading the decline across the capitals, with a loss of 7.1 affordable homes a day. Brisbane was losing 5.0 affordable houses a day and in Melbourne the decline in affordable homes is down 3.6 a day. The data also showed that smaller markets like the Gold Coast, Hobart and Adelaide are shedding affordable homes along with Canberra - which is considered to be a renter friendly city due to legislation the ACT government has enacted. The only capital city which has added affordable homes below $750,000 is Darwin, but the growth is small at 0.7 affordable homes a day. Nerida Conisbee, Chief Economist at Ray White, told that the data is even starker when the number of affordable units are factored in. 'Between 2015 and 2025, Sydney's affordable house stock collapsed from 24,009 to just 2,674 – an 89 per cent decline that mirrors similar trends across the Gold Coast (94 per cent decline) and Canberra (89 per cent decline),' she said. She said that if the current trends continue, Sydney will run out of affordable houses in two years - while Melbourne and Brisbane would run out before the 2030s. Ms Conisbee blamed the housing crisis on the spike in the cost of raw construction materials and an undersupply of rental and housing units being built. 'Chronic undersupply means demand continues outstripping available stock, while government first-home buyer assistance schemes paradoxically inflate prices by increasing buyer purchasing power without addressing supply constraints,' she said. Nationally she said capitals were gaining 1.5 affordable units a day, but it was not enough to offset the decline. The federal government has said that tackling the housing crisis in Australia is a priority, and consistently has pointed to the Housing Australia Future Fund. According to a Twitter post from her X account, she claims to Parliament that new home approvals in Australia have increased by 30 per cent on last year. "Great news - home building approvals are up nearly 30 per cent since last year" she tweeted.
