Glasgow Italian artwork collection to go on tour in China

Paintings, ceramics and sculptures which are expected to give a 'culturally-rich' view of the visual arts in Italy from 1400 to 1800 will be loaned out later this year. It is hoped the 'Prosperous Symphony – Italian Treasures from Glasgow Museums' exhibition will boost tourism and trade links with China. Glasgow councillors backed the tour, which is set to start in Shenzhen in September before visiting 'five or six' other cities, at a meeting last week. Items will return to Glasgow in 2028 and could then be displayed in Kelvingrove museum. Following the meeting, a spokesperson for Glasgow Life, the council's culture and leisure arm, which runs the city's museums, said: 'As the first standalone touring exhibition of Italian artwork from Glasgow's museums to museums in China, it represents an exciting opportunity to build on the city's international strategy. 'China is a key overseas market, and this prestigious exchange will strengthen business, academic and civic relationships. It will also position Glasgow in cities across China as a culturally rich, must-visit destination, encouraging inward tourism. 'We are currently finalising which works will travel as part of the tour and will provide an update in due course. Glasgow Life will receive £30,000 from each venue hosting Prosperous Symphony – Italian Treasures from Glasgow Museums.' A council report stated that alongside 33 paintings, the collection includes examples of ceramics, glass, marble sculpture, textile, arms and armour. An exhibition of the city's Italian art went on tour to the United States in 2013 and all but one of the paintings and objects have been in storage since. Glasgow Life will be working with NOMAD Exhibitions on the tour, which has estimated around 100,000 visitors per venue. The council report added: 'With a new international strategy, regular trade missions, links between the city's universities, businesses and China and the targeting of a direct air route into the city, the timing to use an exhibition as cultural exchange and the backdrop for other initiatives is now.' It stated Glasgow Airport is targeting a direct China to Glasgow air route to complement two direct flights per week — four in summer — between Edinburgh and Beijing. Ideas to promote the tour include using the University of Glasgow's networks, as it has 9,000 Chinese students as well as alumni who now work in China. Connections through Glasgow's chamber of commerce, which aims to attract inward investment from businesses in Beijing and Shanghai, will also be explored.

‘Sick joke': Aussie George Kambosos victim of cruel KO loss to Richardson Hitchins

Don't miss out on the headlines from Boxing/MMA. Followed categories will be added to My News. George Kambosos has suffered the most brutal loss of his career with boxing commentators suggesting he was so outclassed that the fight should not have been allowed to go ahead. The former IBF and WBO world champ was taught a devastating lesson by American Richardson Hitchins on Sunday before the referee stopped the fight in the eighth round. Hitchins vs Kambosos Jr | SUN 15 JUNE 9AM AEST | IBF super lightweight champ Richardson Hitchins attempts to make a first defence of his crown against Australia's George Kambosos Jr. | Order now with Main Event on Kayo Sports The crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York watched Kambosos get belted right from the opening round as Hitchins defeded his IBF junior welterweight title in style. Kambosos was knocked to the ground for the first time in the eighth round when Hitchins landed a third savage body shot, but the fight could easily have been stopped in the previous rounds. Kambosos bravely fought on after he had been left wincing from two earlier body shots and a barrage of jabs to the face. You can watch the KO punch in the video player above. According to DAZN, Hitchins landed 104 jabs to Kambosos' 32 after seven rounds. Leading boxing commentator Sergio Mora said on the broadcast the fight had been a 'surgical beatdown'. 'Hitchins has no respect for Kambosos now' he said in an earlier round. 'Now he's not even jumping back or trying to counter. He's barely making him miss with that shoulder before coming back with that right hand landing accurately.' He went on to say: 'Hitchins is so relaxed. He has no respect for him'. The referee stopped the fight. Photo: DAZN. The commentary team noted Hitchins at one point yelled at Kambosos' corner to stop the fight. Boxing analyst Chris Mannix scored the fight 70-63 after seven rounds. 'Surgical performances do not get much more dominant than that,' he said. Boxing guru Dan Rafael was even more savage in his analysis, questioning why the fight was allowed to happen. Since his historic triumph over Teofimo Lopez, Kambosos has lost four of his past six fights. Rafael posted on X: 'That the IBF made Kambosos mandatory is a sick joke'. He went on to write: 'Complete and utter destruction in a mismatch. Hitchins easily retains the IBF 140 title in a sensational performance. He wrote earlier: 'Hitchins continues to beat the s*** out of Kambosos. Punishing him, battering him. 'I said it would be a massacre and thru four rounds that is what it is. 4-0 and Hitchins landing at will.' Lopez was ringside for the fight ans offered up some brutal advice to the Australian after the fifth round. 'Move your f***ing head,' he said 'Move you're f***ing head.' Kambosos' career is now at crossroads. He said he did not know what will come next for him. 'I don't know right now. I've had two fights in three months' time, two solid guys. I've been fighting the best,' he said. 'Right now, I'm going to coach my son's footy team. That's what I want to do. We'll go back to the drawing board.' Speaking after the fight, Hitchins said he had watched Kambosos' previous fights with Devin Haney and knew if he was able to take the fight inside he would be able to find success. 'He (Haney) was head-hunting a lot when he was hurt, so I said I'm going to touch him with some short shots and when I did I saw that he squinted,' added Hitchins. 'I smelled blood but I just wanted to keep punishing him. I told his dad, 'If you love your son you should stop the fight'. He was tough. He was a true competitor. But I was just the better man tonight.' Originally published as 'Sick joke': Aussie George Kambosos victim of cruel KO loss to Richardson Hitchins

Messi denied in CWC opener, incredible final play leaves Beckham stunned

Don't miss out on the headlines from Football. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Lionel Messi starring, David Beckham owned Inter Miami were unable to find the back of the net in the FIFA Club World Cup opener as they played out a scoreless draw with Egypt's Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. It was a game of two halves as Al Ahly dominated the opening 45 minutes, and would have been in front if not for the heroics of Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. The 38-year-old shot stopper earned man of the match honours for penalty save shortly before half time as well as several important saves in general play. Messi was the main attraction however for the 60,927 fans at the home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins, and the 37-year-old eight-time Ballon d'Or winner came every so close to giving them a memorable goal. A stoppage time curler that initially looked like a ball into the box came agnosingly close to being a late winner but for a piece of Mohamed Elshenawy's glove tipping into the cross bar. In the stands, Beckham clearly thought it was in for all money but he was unable to hide his disappointment as his team took a point away from the contest ahead of what shape up as tougher matches against Portuguese side Porto and Brazil's Palmeiras. The Al Ahly goalkeeper matched the efforts of his opposite number at the other end of the pitch, with seven of Inter Miami's 15 shots on targets. Messi's curling free kick in the 64th minute also teased the crowd, half of whom were out of their seats, as they though it had gone in but the ball had clipped the post and hit the side netting. Messi's old Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez was unable to provide the spark needed as Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano, the former Barcelona, Liverpool and Argentine midfielder, said they were much improved in the second half but 'could improve with the transition'. 'In the first half, we lost some balls where we gave them transition, but in the second half we had the chances to score and win the game.' Al Ahly's were threatening in attack with eight of their ten shots on target and on the post-match coverage former Italian international Christian Vieri said that Inter Miami could have conceded 'four or five goals' in the second half. Al Ahly also overcame the early loss of midfielder Emam Ashour, who is an Egyptian international, was forced off with an injury in just the 14th minute and not long after the football world's hearts were in mouths as Messi clutched in his knee on the ground after a collision. The only time fans saw the ball go into the back of the net was when YouTuber IShowSpeed took the pitch at half time alongside football icons Kaka, Alessandro Del Piero and Pepe to entertain the crowd by showing they still have some of their old skills.
