NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tamar Bates scored 25 points and No. 21 Missouri beat Mississippi State 85-73 on Thursday night to reach the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Tony Perkins added a season-high 20 for the seventh-seeded Tigers (22-10), who will face No. 4 Florida on Friday night in the first tournament game for the Gators.
Josh Hubbard paced Mississippi State (21-12), which was the No. 10 seed in the SEC, with 24 points and Keshawn Murphy added 18.
Caleb Grill hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half, putting the Tigers up 39-34.
Thursday's game was much closer than the only regular-season matchup against the Tigers, an 88-61 victory for Missouri in Starkville.

The Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver room will have a lot of competition as the team narrows down its 53-man roster. Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown have seemingly locked up the top-three spots. Advertisement Kansas City will likely carry six receivers, leaving just three roster spots to be fought for between Jalen Royals, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore, Nikko Remigio, Tyquan Thornton, and undrafted free agent Elijah Badger. Given Royals' recent draft status as a fourth-round selection, he likely has a bit more job security than the rest of the group, realistically leaving two roster spots for five players. According to Arrowhead Addict's Stacy D. Smith, this situation does not bode well for Moore. What Moore has going for him is experience, aside from Smith-Schuster, Moore is the most experienced receiver on the roster, and has the most familiarity with Andy Reid's offense. "The bad news is that Smith-Schuster is the clear favorite to claim one of the remaining spots, and the final WR6 role will likely go to a player who can contribute on special teams." Smith wrote. "If Smith-Schuster secures his spot, that gives a notable edge to third-year receiver Nikko Remigio." Advertisement Smith does point out that a rookie running back - Brashard Smith - may handle the special teams load, allowing Moore to maintain his roster position. "Fortunately for Moore, his chances could improve with the addition of undrafted running back Brashard Smith, who logged 58 returns during his college career at Miami and SMU." Smith noted. "If Smith secures the return specialist role, it could put Nikko Remigio's roster spot in jeopardy, given he has just two career receptions in the Chiefs' offense." Moore's 2024 season was cut short by a core muscle injury that resulted in him being placed on injured reserve in October. Moore played in just six games with three targets, and no receptions. Even when healthy, Moore hasn't been overly productive as a receiver. In his first two NFL seasons, Moore has tallied 250 and 244 receiving yards, respectively, with only one career touchdown. It will certainly be a change of pace not being the lone team pursued following the end of a near three-year title reign. Advertisement But the focus now changes to finding the necessary motivation to enact revenge after their shocking defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. They will get their chance on that exact opponent during Week 2 of the regular season. While the players and coaches have moved past that game, one individual outside the organization clearly has a bone to pick with how things went down. Joining the "New Heights" podcast, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal had to let out his frustrations with the game. O'Neal amused Travis and Jason Kelce, campaigning that the former should have seen a bigger role against the Eagles. "I have a question," the Hall of Famer asked. "How come they didn't use you a lot in the Super Bowl? I know you're [expletive] pissed. I don't wanna get you in trouble. Advertisement "I need the pieces that helped us win the first [expletive] Super Bowl, don't be trying to do new [expletive]... I don't wanna get you in trouble, but I wasn't happy about that." Frankly, no one on the Chiefs could do much of anything against Philly that night. Kelce himself finished with four receptions for 39 yards on six targets. "I tell you what, you don't have to talk, but I'm gonna talk for you," Shaq continued. "Coach, he's [expletive] 6-foot-8. Throw him the goddamn ball. Single coverage, double coverage, at the goal line. Alley-oop, that's the play you call." Kelce has already done his damage in the Super Bowl throughout his career, holding several postseason records for a tight end. That illuminates what has been a first-ballot Hall of Fame career coming to an end after this season. But even if they fall short, Shaq and the rest of his fans should rest assured on the extraordinary career he has put together.
