Psychologist urges urgent reform to battle deepfakes following teen's arrest
Professor Dr Kamal Kenny Saravanan is disturbed by the recent report that a 16-year-old boy in Johor Bahru was arrested for allegedly using artificial intelligence (AI) to create pornographic images of his schoolmates and school alumni.
Eight reports were lodged against the student. The case is being investigated under Section 292 of the Penal Code for the sale, distribution, or circulation of obscene materials and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for sharing offensive and inappropriate content.
The psychologist said deepfakes are becoming a serious global concern, particularly within the digital and cyber landscape.
Kamal added that parents and schools must equip children with the knowledge and tools to navigate digital spaces safely, as there is a critical need to raise awareness about the dos and don'ts of social media use.
'It's no understatement to say that social media has become a child's modern-day playground. With this reality in mind, young people must be equipped with accessible, age-appropriate information about consent and boundaries,' Kamal told Twentytwo13.
'This knowledge empowers them to understand whether their actions — or the actions of others — are right or wrong, potentially preventing them from becoming either a victim or a perpetrator.
'Doing this can protect young people from harm and help them become responsible digital citizens in an increasingly complex online world.'
Schools and families must do more
Kamal said there is an urgent need to stop sweeping the 'controversial' topic under the rug. Ignoring these issues will only allow more young people to become silent victims of predators.
'It's time we take proactive steps in education, policy, and community dialogue to protect and empower our youth in the digital age,' he said.
Kamal suggested that the relevant authorities create digital platforms to educate young people about the dangers of deepfake technology and online misconduct.
One method would be through interactive online games designed specifically to highlight what constitutes harmful behaviour and how one could be held accountable.
'Imagine a game integrated into school curricula, where every student must complete it as part of their digital literacy or personal development programme.
'Through real-life scenarios and choices, they could learn about consent, boundaries, consequences, and the psychological impact of malicious online activity in a way that's engaging, age-appropriate, and memorable,' said Kamal.
'Schools should also integrate comprehensive digital safety and sex education into their curricula, focusing not only on biological aspects but also on the psychosocial impacts of online harm.'
Kamal said families must take an active role in monitoring their children's screen time and utilise appropriate tools or software to prevent malicious online predators from targeting them.
'Open communication between parents and children about online safety is key.'
Psychological impact
He said the psychological impact of such violations can be deeply damaging, especially for young people. This disturbing trend is reflected in the growing number of youths experiencing mental health challenges as a result of online abuse and exploitation.
Kamal said there is a danger to long-term mental health if the victims are threatened or manipulated by perpetrators who hint at or imply the existence of such content.
This fear can lead to anxiety, distrust, and underlying mental health challenges if the threats are prolonged or emotionally distressing.
'There needs to be more dialogue around the growing challenges faced by our youth. I've emphasised the importance of shifting from reactive measures to proactive, preventive strategies by policymakers,' said Kamal.
He added that there is a psychological connection between online anonymity and moral disengagement.
'The sense of anonymity on online platforms often gives individuals a false sense of detachment from their actions.
'When people feel they can't be identified, they're more likely to disregard moral responsibility, leading to increased risks of abuse, harassment, and even criminal behaviour.
'This highlights the urgent need for digital ethics education and stronger accountability mechanisms in online spaces.'

Police shoot dead armed suspect in Bayan Lepas; arrest eight others tied to 25 robberies across Penang
GEORGE TOWN, May 15 — A 35-year-old man was shot dead by police early this morning after he opened fire at officers during a crime prevention operation in Bayan Lepas, Penang. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the incident occurred at about 4.05am when officers approached a car parked along Lintang Bukit Jambul. 'Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department were on patrol when they noticed the vehicle and moved in to conduct a check,' he said in a statement. Hamzah said the officers identified themselves, but the man suddenly exited the vehicle and fired at them. 'The police returned fire in self-defence,' he said, adding that the suspect was killed at the scene. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a pistol with three rounds of ammunition, an iron rod, two rattan sticks, two machetes, 15 packets of suspected methamphetamine weighing about 22.5g, a signal jammer, and various tools and clothing believed to be used in housebreaking activities. Hamzah said the deceased was believed to be a Malaysian with prior records for 19 criminal and 15 drug-related offences. Following the incident, police arrested seven men and one woman in connection with the case. All eight are believed to have been involved in criminal activities with the deceased. 'Four of the suspects have prior criminal records, while the remaining four do not,' he said. With the arrests, police believe they have solved 25 cases of robbery, housebreaking and laundromat break-ins around Penang, involving estimated losses of approximately RM500,000. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960, which provides for a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment.

Real Madrid's Raul Asencio could face criminal proceedings for allegedly sharing sex tape of a minor
Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio could face criminal proceedings for allegedly sharing a sex tape involving a minor. On Wednesday, the San Bartolome de Tirajana court in Gran Canaria confirmed an investigation into the allegations had concluded and that four footballers, including Asencio could face criminal proceedings for allegedly recording and distributing videos of sexual content of a minor and one other woman. Advertisement The 22-year-old was named in the starting XI for Madrid's La Liga game against Mallorca and the statement from the court came before kick-off in the game at the Bernabeu. The case relates to an alleged incident at a beach club in the south of the Spanish island in 2023. The three other players (Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez, and Andres Garcia) were arrested in September 2023. After Asencio was called to give testimony as a witness, he then became part of the Guardia Civil (Civil Guard, Spanish law enforcement) investigation. At that point, the club said 'a Castilla player and three Real Madrid C players' had made statements to the Guardia Civil 'relating to a complaint about the alleged broadcasting of a private video via WhatsApp'. 'When the club has detailed knowledge of the facts, we will take the appropriate measures,' it added. The Athletic reported in February that a Spanish court rejected an appeal on behalf of Asencio for the provisional dismissal of the case. Court documents during that appeal confirmed that one of the women was under the age of 16 when the incident took place. The statement by the court on Wednesday stated the investigation had concluded. In a document in Spanish, which has been translated, it said it 'qualifies (the players') actions as allegedly constitutive of crimes of discovery of secrets without consent and violation of privacy (article 197.1 of the Penal Code), of distribution and sending to third parties of the videos without warning the victims or their consent (article 197.3) and of recruitment or use of minors for pornographic purposes and possession of the videos without their consent (article 197.4) and of possession of the videos without the consent of the victims (article 197.4)'. The case has now been sent to the Public Prosecutor's Office, which can file an indictment and request the opening of a trial against the players or request the case to be closed. This decision is then subject to appeal. Advertisement Asencio has made 21 La Liga appearances for Madrid this season while Ruiz, Rodriguez and Garcia, former youth team-mates of Asencio all left the club last summer. Ruiz moved to Girona and the club's sporting director, Quique Carcel, said in November, 'I respect the presumption of innocence,' in relation to the investigation. Rodriguez and Garcia joined teams in Spain's third division (Tarazona and Alcorcon). Both Real Madrid and Asencio's representatives declined to comment. ()

Ten remanded for four days over assault on Form Five student in Seremban
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Ten individuals aged between 17 and 31 have been remanded for four days starting today to assist investigations into the assault of a Form Five student in Paroi, Seremban early Friday morning. Seremban district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the remand order was obtained from the Seremban Magistrates' Court after all suspects were arrested yesterday. 'The remand, which lasts until Wednesday, is to facilitate the investigation. No new arrests have been made as of noon today, but efforts to track down other suspects are ongoing. 'We urge witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation,' he said in a statement today. He also reminded the public not to circulate images or videos of the incident on social media, as doing so could interfere with the investigation and prosecution process. Earlier, videos and photos of the bloodied victim went viral, believed to have been attacked by a group of men. The incident reportedly occurred around 3am Friday, allegedly triggered by a misunderstanding when one of the suspects believed the victim had harmed his younger brother. A police report was lodged by the victim's father. The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
