'Legendary' Pembrokeshire carnival returning to town after six-year absence

Yahoo27-04-2025
An old-established Pembrokeshire carnival that has been absent from the summer scene for six years is all set to make a return for 2025.
Haverfordwest Carnival last took to the streets of the county town in 2019, the year before the coronavirus pandemic which then saw all big events put on hold.
But hopes are high that 2025 will once again welcome the colourful Haverfordwest Carnival, with a return to its glory days of floats, bands and a host of walking entries.
The Pirates of Prendergast starred in the 2018 carnival. (Image: Western Telegraph) Pure West Radio and Haverfordwest Town Council have teamed up to stage the event this summer – on a date to be decided - and are now seeking the views of the public on the carnival theme, preferred day and how people would like to support.
Pure West Radio announced the exciting plans on Facebook, where they said: ' It's been 6 years but.......Haverfordwest Carnival is BACK for 2025!
"We are teaming up with Haverfordwest Town Council to bring back the legendary Haverfordwest carnival, and we would love to hear your views.
"From day, to themes, to fancy dress, and vendors, let us know your thoughts and ideas here, https://form.jotform.com/251033119103036."

"Growing up, the carnival was the highlight of the summer, the town would be packed, all of the pubs would be full and it was a good day/night out," said Emma Flan. "So happy to see it coming back and I really hope everyone gets involved."
And Michelle Dukes added: "Brilliant news, the town definitely needs something like this."
While Lucy Lulu Eagles recalled: "I love the carnival! Used to look forward to it every year with the kids, to hear the lovely sound of the band then knowing the floats would follow."

Organised by Haverfordwest Round Table, the carnival entertainment featured a Queen tribute act and a junior Stars in Your Eyes competition.
The 2018 carnival saw a big revival after an absence of several years and took a maritime theme in line with the Visit Wales 'Year of the Sea' campaign.
Floats also made a return to the procession and despite the wet weather, crowds of people turned out to watch the carnival parade from County Hall, up through High Street, and back down Barn Street before it made its way to the Bridge Meadow.

(Image: Haverfordwest Town Council) There was a change of day for the 2019 carnival, as it was staged on a Sunday as a grand finale to Haverfordwest Festival Week in July. By contrast to the previous year's weather, the event enjoyed a day of sunshine.
And although the public can't choose the weather for the 2025 Haverfordwest Carnival, people's thoughts and ideas for the occasion are being very much welcomed, via the survey form, linked above.

HELOC rates today, August 19, 2025: Don't wait for a 4% HELOC, get it now

HELOC interest rates remain under 9%. However, introductory home equity line of credit rates are as low as 3.99% APR for six months to one year. Many of the lowest offers we've found are from credit unions. Dig deeper: Is now a good time to take out a HELOC? This embedded content is not available in your region. HELOC rates Tuesday, August 19, 2025 According to Bank of America, the largest HELOC lender in the country, today's average APR on a 10-year draw HELOC is 8.72%. That is a variable rate that kicks in after a six-month introductory APR, which is 6.49% in most parts of the country. The national HELOC rate spread runs from a low of 8.05% APR to a high of 9.59%. Homeowners have a substantial amount of value tied up in their houses — more than $34 trillion at the end of 2024, according to the Federal Reserve. That's the third-largest amount of home equity on record. With mortgage rates lingering in the high 6% range, homeowners are not likely to let go of their primary mortgage anytime soon, so selling the house may not be an option. Why let go of your 5%, 4% — or even 3% mortgage? Accessing some of the value locked into your house with a use-it-as-you-need-it HELOC can be an excellent alternative. How lenders determine HELOC interest rates HELOC interest rates are different from primary mortgage rates. Second mortgage rates are based on an index rate plus a margin. That index is often the prime rate, which today is 7.50%. If a lender added 1% as a margin, the HELOC would have a rate of 8.50%. Lenders have flexibility with pricing on a second mortgage product, such as a HELOC or home equity loan, so it pays to shop. Your rate will depend on your credit score, the amount of debt you carry, and the amount of your credit line compared to the value of your home. And average national HELOC rates can include "introductory" rates that may only last for six months or one year. After that, your interest rate will become adjustable, likely beginning at a substantially higher rate. How a HELOC works You don't have to give up your low-rate mortgage to access the equity in your home. Keep your primary mortgage and consider a second mortgage, such as a home equity line of credit. The best HELOC lenders offer low fees, a fixed-rate option, and generous credit lines. A HELOC allows you to easily use your home equity in any way and in any amount you choose, up to your credit line limit. Pull some out; pay it back. Repeat. Meanwhile, you're paying down your low-interest-rate primary mortgage like the wealth-building machine you are. This embedded content is not available in your region. Look for introductory rates, but be aware of a rate adjustment later Today, FourLeaf Credit Union is offering a HELOC rate of 6.49% for 12 months on lines up to $500,000. That's an introductory rate that will convert to a variable rate later. When shopping lenders, be aware of both rates. And as always, compare fees, repayment terms, and the minimum draw amount. The draw is the amount of money a lender requires you to initially take from your equity. The power of a HELOC is tapping only what you need and leaving some of your line of credit available for future needs. You don't pay interest on what you don't borrow. HELOC rates today: FAQs What is a good interest rate on a HELOC right now? Rates vary so much from one lender to the next that it's hard to pin down a magic number. You may see rates from nearly 7% to as much as 18%. It really depends on your creditworthiness and how diligent a shopper you are. Is it a good idea to get a HELOC right now? For homeowners with low primary mortgage rates and a chunk of equity in their house, it's probably one of the best times to get a HELOC. You don't give up that great mortgage rate, and you can use the cash drawn from your equity for things like home improvements, repairs, and upgrades. Of course, you can use a HELOC for fun things too, like a vacation — if you have the discipline to pay it off promptly. A vacation is likely not worth taking on long-term debt. What is the monthly payment on a $50,000 home equity line of credit? If you take out the full $50,000 from a line of credit on a $400,000 home, your payment may be around $395 per month with a variable interest rate beginning at 8.75%. That's for a HELOC with a 10-year draw period and a 20-year repayment period. That sounds good, but remember, it winds up being a 30-year loan. HELOCs are best if you borrow and pay back the balance in a much shorter period of time.

Wall St futures subdued ahead of retail earnings, Fed commentary

(Reuters) -U.S. stock index futures were muted on Tuesday as investors awaited earnings reports from major retailers for insights on the health of the American consumer, and a key Federal Reserve conference scheduled later in the week. Consumer spending accounts for around 70% of the total U.S. economy and traders are keen to know the impact U.S. tariffs have had on corporate forecasts and individual expenditure. Data last week showed the levies had dented consumer confidence in July. Home improvement retailer Home Depot inched up in premarket trading ahead of its quarterly results that could also offer clues on the condition of the housing market. Reports from rival Lowe's as well as big-box retailers Walmart and Target are due later this week. Intel jumped 6.3% after the chipmaker got a $2 billion capital injection from Japan's SoftBank Group. Investors are also waiting for remarks from Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman later in the day. Bowman, who is under consideration for the central bank's top job when Chair Jerome Powell's term ends next year, has voiced support for at least three interest rate cuts this year to support the labor market, in line with U.S. President Donald Trump's calls for lower borrowing costs. Interest rate futures point to a total of two rate cuts this year worth 25 basis points each, with the first expected in September, according to data compiled by LSEG. "It is perfectly possible to make a case for immediate U.S. rate cuts given the economic damage of trade taxes and policy uncertainty," said Paul Donovan, chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management. At 05:30 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were up 20 points, or 0.04%, S&P 500 E-minis were down 0.75 points, or 0.01%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 4.25 points, or 0.02%. Wall Street's main indexes have recovered since their April lows, when trade uncertainty stuck global markets, and have picked up steam following a better-than-expected earnings season and on the rate-cut expectations. The key event this week is the Fed's annual symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from Aug. 21-23, where Powell's comments will be scrutinized for any clues on the central bank's outlook on the economy and monetary policy. Offering a spot of relief, ratings agency S&P Global affirmed its 'AA+' credit rating on the U.S., saying the revenue from President Trump's tariffs will offset the fiscal hit from his recent tax-cut and spending bill. On the data front, a report later in the day is expected to show single-family homebuilding in July was lower than the month before, when it dropped to an 11-month low. Palo Alto Networks surged 5.6% after the cybersecurity company forecast fiscal 2026 revenue and profit above estimates, betting on growing demand for its artificial intelligence-powered solutions. Crude prices dropped 1% as traders weighed the possibility that talks between Russia, Ukraine and the U.S. to end the war in Ukraine could lead to the lifting of sanctions on Russian crude, raising supply.
