Jake Paul Vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Fight Preview
JJake Paul (11-1 with seven knockouts) found a niche for himself fairly quickly as a pro boxer. That niche was targeting MMA fighters with name recognition who were undersized or had undeveloped boxing skills. Paul's wins over Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva got the YouTuber-turned-boxer a lot of attention.
In 2023, Paul stepped up in competition, skill, and size to face Tommy Fury. The result of that fight was Paul's first and only pro loss, dropping a split decision to Fury.
Paul followed that loss by getting back in the ring with a former UFC fighter in Nate Diaz. Paul won that bout by split decision.
Since beating Diaz, Paul is 4-0 with wins over Andre August, Ryan Bourland, Mike Perry, and most recently, Mike Tyson.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-6-1 with 24 KOs) has had a hard time shaking the visual of his 2019 loss to Daniel Jacobs, a fight where he came in overweight and quit in the fifth round. Chavez's action on that night left the crowd at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, showering the ring with debris.
Chavez is 3-2 since that loss, but he says he will be a different fighter against Paul.
"Now I'm disciplined, I'm focused, I want to finish the fight with Paul with a win and take this opportunity to be back in real boxing. That's my goal."

Jake Paul is very selective when it comes to his opponents. Over the past few years he's carefully picked competition who have name recognition and who can draw eyeballs to his fights. That approach has largely paid off for Paul as he only has one loss on his record.
Paul is not cosplaying as a boxer. He has skills and from all appearances he trains hard and takes the sport seriously. He deserves respect and notice for that. However, he's not facing the cream of the crop when it comes to his career, and that's by (smart) choice.
Chavez is the most skilled fighter Paul has faced, outside of Tyson, but like Tyson, who was 58 when he faced Paul, there are questions about how effective a 39-year-old Chavez can be in 2025. After all, he has only fought once since 2021 and that was against a fomer UFC fighter in Uriah Hall.
Even when he was in his prime there were questions about how dedicated Chavez was to the craft of boxing and how hard he trained. Chavez is saying all the right things heading into this contest, but then again, this is a man with a 2021 loss to an aging Anderson Silva on his record, a man Paul defeated by unanimous decision.

If Chavez comes into this fight at 100 percent and is ready to compete, he has the skills to beat Paul. So, that's the question. Is Chavez going to slip the ropes at the Honda Center on Saturday night at 100 percent? Paul is betting against that. Should you do the same?
I don't think so.
Expect Paul to respect Chavez's skills in this fight if he shows those attributes early. If Chavez looks as if he isn't taking Paul seriously, look for Paul to be aggressive and make Chavez pay for that disrespect.
A dialed-in Chavez has the tools to beat a younger and more athletic Paul, but we haven't seen that version of Chavez in a long while. With that, look for Paul to grind his way to a decision.

The Phillies Could Close Their Contention Window After This Season
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 17: Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies hits a ... More two-run home run against the Colorado Rockies during the sixth inning of a game at Citizens Bank Park on April 17, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by) The Philadelphia Phillies are right where they expect to be at this point in the season, sitting atop the National League East with a 47-33 record. They're in position for their fourth-consecutive playoff appearance, but they're still searching for their first World Series championship since 2008. They need to pull out all the stops in their quest for the trophy because their window might be closing after this season. Philadelphia has the same core that propelled them to success over the last few years, but that core is starting to get older. They're the only team in MLB whose pitchers and position players both have an average age of 30, and their hitters are the second-oldest in the league. Phillies Contracts They have seven players under contract for next season, not counting arbitration-eligible and pre-arbitration players. Of those seven guys, only Cristopher Sánchez is under the age of 32 this year. (This counts Trea Turner, who turns 32 on June 30.) The others include three hitters and three pitchers who will be in their mid-30s next season. Bryce Harper and Turner will be Phillies teammates for a long, long time. Harper is in the middle of a 13-year, $330 million deal that lasts until 2031. The 32-year-old first baseman is hitting .258/.368/.446 with a 123 OPS+, indicating his offense has been 23% above the league average. Those are excellent numbers, but they're below his usual standards—the two-time MVP has a career OPS+ of 142—and he's on the injured list right now with wrist inflammation. Turner is signed through 2033 on an 11-year, $300 million contract, and he has been the best player in the Phillies' lineup this season, pacing them with 2.6 WAR (Baseball-Reference version). He leads the National League with 96 hits and has also stolen 19 bases. However, he's on borrowed time defensively, as there are no starting shortstops in MLB this season older than 32. While he's still a strong defender up the middle for now, he'll have to change positions long before the end of his contract. Right fielder Nick Castellanos is also under contract for next year for $20 million. He's hitting .281/.322/.437 with a 107 OPS+, but his awful defense bring his WAR down to -0.4. He could transition into a designated hitter role next year. In addition to Sánchez, they'll return ace Zack Wheeler in the rotation, who will earn $42 million each year through 2027. With a 2.55 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and 126 strikeouts in 99 innings, he's making a run at the Cy Young Award this year in his age-35 season. Their other pitching contracts aren't aging well. Longtime rotation stalwart Aaron Nola is in the second year of a seven-year, $172 million deal, but he's on the injured list with a sprained ankle. Before the injury, he compiled a 6.16 ERA through nine starts. Taijuan Walker will receive $18 million in 2026. He lost his rotation spot in May despite having a 3.99 ERA this season. Phillies Free Agents Several key players on the Phillies roster have contracts expiring at the end of this season, and they'll have a difficult time replacing their production. Chief among them is designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. He has been the club's best bat by far, hitting .250/.380/.534 with a 149 OPS+, and his 24 home runs and 56 walks both rank third in the National League. It will be tough for the team to retain him as a free agent entering his age-33 campaign, especially when Castellanos needs to move out of the outfield. Starting pitcher Ranger Suárez will be one of the biggest names available this offseason. He has a 2.08 ERA through 10 starts and 65 innings, and he could make his second consecutive All-Star appearance this year. He will be 30 when he reaches free agency, so he will command a large multiyear commitment on the open market. Two veteran position players have been disappointments in what will likely be their final year in Philadelphia. Catcher J.T. Realmuto is having the worst full season of his 12-year career at the age of 34, hitting .240/.307/.354 with an 82 OPS+. Outfielder Max Kepler signed a one-year, $10 million contract in December, but he's batting only .211/.303/.388 with an 89 OPS+. Even though Realmuto and Kepler aren't hitting much, they represent two more holes the front office will have to fill this offseason. With Schwarber and Suárez set to depart and the remaining core getting older, the Phillies could have trouble staying in playoff contention in 2026. That makes it even more important to go after the championship this year.

North Texas restaurant names pizza after No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg, topped with his favorites
New era begins as Mavs and their fans celebrate Cooper Flagg pick New era begins as Mavs and their fans celebrate Cooper Flagg pick New era begins as Mavs and their fans celebrate Cooper Flagg pick The Mavericks' No. 1 draft pick, Cooper Flagg, is on his way to Dallas and one restaurant is welcoming him with a mix of his favorite things. Motor City Pizza, located off I-35E and Justin Road in Lewisville, introduced The Cooper Flagg Pizza ahead of the draft. After doing some research, the pizzeria said the No. 1 draft pick's favorite food is a chicken bacon ranch steak melt sandwich. So, they turned it into a pizza on June 25. The pizza is a Detroit-style pie with ranch, red bell peppers, bacon and chicken, topped with mixed greens. According to the restaurant's website, The Cooper Flagg Pizza starts at $16.95. To wash it down, Bedford's Turning Point Brewery created a beer inspired by his favorite drink – blue Gatorade – although 18-year-old Flagg won't be able to enjoy it. Motor City did not say how long the pizza will be available. Flagg joins a roster stacked with No. 1 picks The 6-foot-8 forward led the Blue Devils in all five major statistical categories, and has already proven his game can hold up against the pros when he played well last summer during an invite to the U.S. Olympic team's training camp. Flagg will join a Mavericks roster already loaded with talent, including forward Anthony Davis and guard Kyrie Irving, who has reportedly signed a new 3-year contract with Dallas. Flagg will wear No. 32 for the Mavericks.

Hornets draft pick Kon Knueppel calls entering NBA 'blessing from God'
Kon Knueppel heard his name called fairly early during the NBA Draft on Wednesday night. The Charlotte Hornets selected the former Duke Blue Devils star with the No. 4 pick. He went three picks after his teammate, Cooper Flagg, was taken No. 1 by the Dallas Mavericks. Knueppel was with his brothers as he spoke to ESPN following the selection and praised the Lord for being able to turn professional. "I mean it's such a blessing from God to be able to enter the NBA, but to be able to share it with your family is beyond comprehension. It's such a special moment for us and for me," he said. Kash Knueppel was one of Kon's four brothers who was with him on draft night. He was asked to hype up his brother. "It's awesome. It's a blessing from God. He'll have fun – every minute of it. It'll be awesome to watch him from home," he said. Kon Knuppel briefly mentioned his Christian faith in an interview with Rivals in February 2023. He said it was a big reason why he was considering Virginia at the time before he ultimately decided to join Duke. Tony Bennett was the head coach of the Cavaliers at the time. "I've told a couple of people this, but when I went on my visit there, coach (Tony) Bennett said that he wanted me to know that Virginia is a faith-based program," he said at the time. "That's something that's stuck with me, being a Christian. "That's something that's really important to me, so that was awesome to hear and something I don't always hear. They've also got a great, great program. They've been the best in the ACC for a long time now." Knueppel played one season at Duke. He averaged 14.4 points and 4 rebounds per game.
