At the upcoming Women's Rugby World Cup in England, players will wear high-tech mouthguards that flash red after heavy head impacts, aiming to boost safety and reduce concussion risks, British media reported. The 'smart' gumshields, in use from August 22 to September 27, will instantly alert the match-day doctor when a significant collision is detected.Referees will also be advised to stop play if they see the red light. Following its debut at the tournament, the technology is expected to be introduced across top-tier rugby next season. This development builds on World Rugby 's adoption of instrumented mouthguards into the Head Injury Assessment (HIA) process in October 2023. Initially trialed in the WXV women's competition, the devices became a formal part of HIA protocols from January 2024.World Rugby chief medical officer Dr. Eanna Falvey told The Times that some male players have declined to wear the Bluetooth-enabled mouthguards, citing discomfort, privacy issues, or reluctance to participate in off-field HIAs. In contrast, women's teams have been more receptive."The women's leagues and teams are much more likely to collaborate and are more excited about opportunities in technology," Falvey said. He confirmed full opt-in participation for the World Cup, except for two players who cannot use the devices due to wearing braces.By delivering real-time impact data and visible alerts, the mouthguards are designed to enable quicker medical intervention and stronger player protection. World Rugby hopes the innovation will become a transformative tool in managing head injuries and safeguarding athletes at every level of the game.

M&M plans world tour on multi-energy SUV platform

Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra is plotting a calibrated push into key overseas markets, anchored by a new modular platform that will spawn its next generation of SUVs. The automaker will however continue to prioritise leadership in revenue market share over sheer volume gains, said a senior company executive. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency "Volume share gains are happening on their own, but our metric remains revenue market share," Rajesh Jejurikar, CEO and executive director, auto and farm sectors at M&M told ET. "Chasing volumes could lead us to the wrong strategic choices." The maker of Thar and XUV7OO SUVs leads India's SUV market in revenue share though it ranks second in volume. M&M clocked record sales of 152,100 SUVs in Q1 FY26. M&M is expecting the next phase of growth to be driven by the newly-developed NU IQ. It is the company's first-ever architecture capable of churning internal combustion and electric powertrains , along with front- and all-wheel drive options, and both left- and right-hand drive formats. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo On Friday, the company unveiled the Vision.S, Vision.T, and Vision.X SUV concepts based on the NU IQ. The platform is designed for high modularity and component commonality, enabling faster development, lower costs, and the agility to adjust product offerings in line with shifting consumer preferences and technology trends. "Once you create a platform, you can't reinvent it every time customer choices change. Modularity gives us the ability to respond quickly," said Jejurikar. M&M's INGLO platform will continue to underpin larger e-SUVs, while NU IQ will be used for compact and subcompact SUVs, with both coexisting in the portfolio. Live Events To support future growth, the company will expand annual capacity at its plant in Chakan, Pune, by 240,000 vehicles, taking total capacity there to 750,000-760,000 units. It is also scouting for a greenfield facility for longer-term expansion. The international rollout will follow a "saturation-first" playbook, entailing building build presence, dealer networks, and service capability in one market before moving to the next, said Jejurikar. South Africa served as the first proving ground, followed by Australia and New Zealand, he added. It is now preparing to enter the UK, as well as other right- and left-hand-drive markets, including select markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, to tap into premium SUV "white space" opportunities, said Jejurikar. The platform strategy is aimed at delivering aspirational SUVs to both local and overseas buyers, avoiding brand dilution from chasing entry-level markets. "We don't want to dilute our identity by entering segments that aren't core to us," said Jejurikar, adding that M&M's average selling price remains well above the industry average. By consolidating multiple powertrains on one platform, the automaker is aiming to future-proof its product range against uncertainty in adoption curves for EVs, hybrids and advanced ICE vehicles.

Tablet sales sail smooth on 5G wave; India market grows by 20% QoQ in April-June

New Delhi: India's tablet market grew 20% quarter-on-quarter in the April-June quarter of 2025, driven by greater availability of fifth-generation (5G)-enabled devices and channel expansion by top vendors, according to a report released by CyberMedia Research (CMR). Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency The report said 5G tablets remained the key growth catalyst, accounting for 95% of shipments year-on-year, as Indians adopt next-generation connectivity. Apple led the tablet market with a 30% volume share as its shipments rose by 10% year-on-year in Q2 2025. The iPhone and iPad maker, however, had a 33% share in the corresponding quarter last year. Apple's performance was "supported by a 78% quarter-on-quarter and 10% year-on-year growth", CMR said, adding that its shipments were driven by a strong demand for the newly launched iPad 11 series, which accounted for 70% of Apple's total shipments during the quarter, alongside improved availability across both online and offline channels. Apple was followed by Samsung with a 27% share, Lenovo (16%), Xiaomi (15%) and OnePlus (6%), according to CMR. For Samsung, its broad portfolio enabled it to sustain performance across both affordable and enterprise segments, while Lenovo benefited from demand in the education segment, and Xiaomi had competitive value-for-money tablet offerings combined with strategic expansion across online and offline retail channels. "India's tablet market is advancing along two complementary growth paths-value-for-money and premium," said Menka Kumari, senior analyst-industry intelligence group (IIG), CMR. "The strong double-digit growth in the value-for-money segment highlights robust demand from students, gig workers and value-conscious users seeking reliable performance, and new compelling Android value-for-money tablets from brands, such as Xiaomi and OnePlus." She added that the premium segment, led by Apple and Samsung, is seeing heightened traction from professionals and "ecosystem loyalists who prioritise seamless integration, security and superior experience". The research firm has forecasted a 10-15% growth for the tablet market in 2025. Canalys has separately forecasted that tablet shipments are expected to contract by 8%. "As we move into the festive quarter-a traditionally strong period for consumer electronics-CMR's analysis points to a sustained momentum and consistent growth, driven by demand from both urban centres and the expanding base of Aspirational India," Kumari said.

Soccer-Marshall Islands make history with first-ever international football match

By Michael Brock HT Image Aug 15 (Reuters) - The Marshall Islands finally got off the mark in international football on Thursday and promptly lost 4-0 to the U.S. Virgin Islands on a high school pitch in Arkansas, but not before making history as the world's newest national team. The remote Pacific nation with fewer than 40,000 people played their first-ever international at the 3,000-capacity Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium in Springdale, better known as home to the local high school's American football team. "I feel surreal this morning; it's one of those out-of-body experiences," technical director Lloyd Owers told Reuters before the historic match. "I don't think we or anyone else thought we'd be here in two and a half years. The fact that it's going viral across the world is a great feeling." The English ex-semi-professional player from Oxfordshire, who took charge in 2022, led a squad this week that included players experiencing 11-a-side football for the first time. With just five training sessions together, the 20-man squad spans generations from a 15-year-old to a player in his early 40s. "The (team) were a bit nervy, understandably, but we have a good dynamic off the field and that has helped raise our game," Owers added. "Now we're going into these games wanting to compete and turn that nervous energy into a positive experience." The match kicked off the Marshall Islands' own creation — the Outrigger Challenge Cup, a four-team tournament featuring two FIFA members, Turks and Caicos Islands (world-ranked 206th)and U.S. Virgin Islands (207th), plus local side Ozark United's under-19 team. Northwest Arkansas was chosen as the venue because it hosts the largest Marshallese community in the United States and offers a convenient mid-point for Caribbean opponents. The Marshall Islands Soccer Federation, established in 2021 with the support of British volunteers and self-funded, harbours ambitions that extend beyond Thursday's outing. FIFA membership would unlock up to $8 million in funding over four years, but confederation membership is required first. Despite writing to Oceania, the Marshall Islands claim to have received no response, with the confederation citing a 'lack of direct air links' as the barrier. They are, however, considering applying to CONCACAF (the North American confederation) and the AFC (Asian confederation). Saturday brings their next challenge against the Turks and Caicos Islands and another chance to make history.
