Catcher Carlos Narváez continues to contribute as bright spot during dark days for Red Sox

'He's very aware of the game, especially defensively,' said manager Alex Cora. 'Sometimes he needs to help out the pitcher, and he saw a window there against Heineman and made the throw.'

After breaking spring training as the backup to Connor Wong, Narváez overtook the starting catcher role after Wong broke his finger on April 7. Narváez has run with the opportunity, producing a

Behind the plate, Narváez is tied for the league lead in runners caught stealing (17) and runners picked off (3), and advanced metrics grade him as one of the league's top catchers in both pitch framing and blocks.

After batting fourth the past two games against Toronto, Narvaez now has more plate appearances this season in the cleanup spot (89) than any other place in the lineup. In those cleanup appearances, he's tallied 21 hits, 13 walks, and just 19 strikeouts.

Narváez's offensive numbers have not been driven by extreme hot streaks, but rather the ability to remain consistent and brush off the tougher stretches that inevitably come.
After going just 3 for 24 on the recent West Coast road trip, he bounced back with two hits in Saturday's win and the home run and a walk Sunday.

Narváez was not impervious to the team's wider issues in the series finale — namely, he grounded out to second base with two runners in scoring position to end the fifth inning — but he put together quality at-bats.
'Offensively, he's been solid,' Cora said. 'Obviously, lately, not as hot as he was early, but he still has been having good [at-bats]. The homer and the walk [Sunday], he's still going to have that for us.'
Last week, Cora even alluded to the possibility of an All-Star berth for Narvaez, whose 2.4 WAR trails only the Mariners' Cal Raleigh (5.0) and the Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk (3.0) among American League catchers.

Cora also acknowledged last week that the Red Sox would need to get both Narvaez and Connor Wong regular playing time as the season wears on.
The team's offday Thursday and a Friday start for Wong resulted in the first stretch since early May where Narvaez had two full days off consecutively. He also has not caught three games in a row since
For his part, Narvaez has been willing to help the club whenever his name is called, by any means necessary — and feels prepared to continue doing so.
'We're halfway through the season, and those days if I don't play, I'm trying to do all my treatment stuff like everybody does,' Narvaez said. 'But it's not a big deal, I feel great body-wise. … I'm trying to be ready every day.'

Virginia Tech Football Preview 2025: Hokies Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players

Virginia Tech Hokies Key to the Season Block did this already in the offensive section, but it really is Hokies struggled way too much to consistently get the passing game going, the third-down conversions weren't there, and the time of possession battle wasn't a plus. That all came from the problems with pass protection and tackles for loss allowed. So ... Xavier Chaplin was one of the top players in the transfer portal - more on that in a moment - and he needs to be replaced at left tackle. It'll take fall camp to figure it out, but if Austin plays like he's supposed to after coming over from West Virginia, this becomes a far easier puzzle to put together, helped by ... Virginia Tech Hokies Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Thomas Rimac, OG be way too basic about it, Virginia Tech horked a slew of good West Virginia linemen who took off rather than be a part of the Rich Rodriguez offensive style. Also, the Hokies had an offensive line that needed fixing. The 6-6, 317-pound Rimac is a two-time All-Big 12 Honorable Mention guard who'll step right Transfer Out: Xavier Chaplin, OT was sort of an odd thing. The Virginia Tech pass protection wasn't good, the running game wasn't strong enough, but the line had a few star talents to work around. The 6-7, 338-pound Chaplin was an all-star at left tackle with the NFL size and skills. Now he'll be a key part of the Auburn offense. Virginia Tech Hokies Key Game at North Carolina State, Sept. 27Virginia Tech beat NC State 11-6 early in the 1902 season, and overall, it's been able to take its share of wins, but the Wolfpack have won the last two in 2022 and 2023. It's not right in any way that the Wolfpack don't play North Caroline, but that's for another time. The Hokies also miss the Notre Dame part-time ACC thing, if Florida State and NC State play like they did last season, the road games are a relative breeze with three of the four in the ACC against teams that finished with losing records, and the other against Georgia Tech. But NC State will be better, and so will Florida State. However, the Hokies only leave Virginia once after October 11th, the opener against South Carolina is in Atlanta, the Vanderbilt game is at home, and there isn't any one date on the slate that's a 100% sure-thing no-chance least for now, though, there are too many 50/50 games that lean loss. Caitlin Clark Shares Indiana Fever Plan for WNBA All-Star Game

Caitlin Clark Shares Indiana Fever Plan for WNBA All-Star Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the city prepares for its first-ever WNBA All-Star weekend, Indiana Fever fans and media alike turned their attention to what has become Sunday's most talked‑about storyline: Caitlin Clark's selection as a 2025 WNBA All-Star captain. Advertisement Clark's captaincy nod comes after she secured 1,293,526 fan votes (the most in the league), earning her first role as an All-Star captain and her second consecutive All-Star selection. During Sunday's media session, a reporter asked Clark how meaningful the honor was for someone "still so new to the league." "Yeah, obviously it's cool," Clark replied. "It's cool that fans get to be a part of it and have a little impact on the game. I think also it's going to be really special to be able to do it here in this city. "I think there's already been so much time and effort put in by so many people that you know, aren't going to get credit for what they did to bring All-Star here... You know, trying to make it the best All-Star the WNBA has ever had." Advertisement As All-Star captains, Clark and Collier will draft their respective rosters, choosing from the remaining eight starters and 12 reserves, which will be revealed on Sunday. "I know we'll certainly do that... I'm going to try to get my teammates on my team. Why wouldn't I? That's obviously the goal," Clark said. The Fever have split their first 16 games, entering the weekend with an 8-8 record – good for third place in the Eastern Conference. Despite Clark missing seven games this season—including the previous two with a left groin strain—the team has rallied for some notable wins. Just last week, Indiana beat the Seattle Storm and Dallas Wings on the road, missing Clark against the Wings.
