Cubs Reportedly Calling Teams to Find Matt Shaw's Replacement Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline

Yahoo5 hours ago

Cubs Reportedly Calling Teams to Find Matt Shaw's Replacement Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Chicago Cubs are expected to make moves during the deadline, and one of them might be replacing Matt Shaw. When Shaw was demoted to Triple-A a few months ago, the idea was for him to eventually come back and figure things out. Instead, Shaw has struggled drastically, getting just four hits in his last 10 games.

Holding a .215 batting average, it's tough to continue allowing the 23-year-old to struggle at the level he has.
While the Cubs need to give Shaw a real chance to compete at the big league level, Chicago is in a position to win a World Series right now. If the Cubs want to be the team they're looking to be, they can't afford for Shaw to continue giving them what he has, which has quite literally been nothing.
However, according to a recent report from Northside Baseball's Matthew Trueblood, the Cubs want to improve their roster and possibly replace him. Trueblood reported that the Cubs have contacted the Athletics and the Minnesota Twins for multiple players.

'In a survey of their needs and chances to address them, the Cubs have made calls about players who would shore up their weaknesses on the bench and in the infield rotation, sources said this week. Two trade candidates on their radar are third baseman Luis Urías, of the West Sacramento Athletics, and utility man Willi Castro, of the Twins, and the Cubs have touched base with each of those teams this month,' he wrote.

Willi Castro would be an interesting player to pursue, but he isn't perfect by any means. Throughout the year, he's impressed, hitting .278 with seven home runs.
It's been the best season of his career, which is a bit worrisome, but he played at a decent level last season, too, earning an All-Star nod. With a 124 OPS+, there's reason to believe he could be a decent fit in Chicago.
He's a second baseman and shortstop, but it's possible that he'd be willing to move over to third base to solve some of the Cubs' issues.

Ex Steelers WR George Pickens Backs Out of Local Youth Camp

Ex Steelers WR George Pickens Backs Out of Local Youth Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Pittsburgh Steelers wideout George Pickens is now a Dallas Cowboy. In a long-anticipated trade of the former Georgia Bulldog, the Steelers shipped Pickens off to the Cowboys along with a 2027 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2026 third-rounder and a 2027 fifth-rounder. Advertisement The team is finally done with the Pickens saga after acquiring D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason. And it appears Pickens is also personally done with the city of Pittsburgh. Pickens apparently canceled an appearance at a local area youth football camp after re-committing after the trade, much to the dismay of the numerous kids who were anticipating him being there, and the organizers of the event. TruEdge Sports released a statement via email to those involved in the camp. "As many of you know, George Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on May 7. Immediately following the trade, our team contacted George's representation to confirm whether he would still honor his commitment to the Pittsburgh event," the statement read. "We were promptly assured that George remained committed to the camp and intended to show up for the families who had registered. Based on that confirmation, we communicated this directly to you via email and text on May 9. Unfortunately, as of last week, TruEdge was notified by George's team that he has decided to walk back on his word and is no longer interested in attending the camp. Let us be very clear: we are deeply frustrated by this decision and the position it has placed all of us in. Advertisement "Our team at TruEdge was fully prepared to host a camp this Saturday because we were led to believe George would follow through on his commitment. His sudden decision to back out not only reflects a disappointing lack of accountability but also shows a disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him. We are incredibly disappointed by his actions and his actions do not express the goals or motives of TruEdge Sports." Steelers' New Addition Drew Aaron Rodgers to Pittsburgh

Steelers' New Addition Drew Aaron Rodgers to Pittsburgh originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The offseason-long saga of Aaron Rodgers-to-the-Pittsburgh-Steelers finally ended, and the 10-time Pro Bowler and four-time league MVP finally inked a deal to play quarterback for the black and gold. Advertisement While there were other suitors, there were always just two that Rodgers was reportedly interested in, the Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings made a commitment to J.J. McCarthy, their No. 1 draft pick from last season, who tore his ACL last offseason. So Rodgers was down to Pittsburgh. But during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers indicated there was one specific thing that drew him there. And it wasn't the money. "On offense, there is good leadership," Rodgers said. "DK is a lead-by-example guy, and he's a big reason why I'm in Pittsburgh as well. Conversations that we had, and just the kind of person that he is. ... I didn't really know DK at all, and he's like, 'I work out at 6 a.m. every day.' I'm like, 'OK, alrighty, this guy is disciplined. This guy has a drive.' I said, 'How 'bout 8 o'clock?' You know, 'cause I have to drive from Malibu to UCLA. He said, 'Yea, that's fine.' So, he's not just a specimen, but he's a really solid human being. Advertisement "The way he practices, and that's I think one of the most encouraging things, is that the room goes how the top dog goes," he said. "And when DK catches the ball and finishes 60 yards to the end zone, it makes everybody else want to do the same thing." If the Rodgers-to-Metcalf connection can find legs next season, there could be something special brewing for the Steelers' offense and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Now, if the defense can just keep up... Ex Steelers Rival Reveals Honest Take on George Pickens Skipping Out on Youth Camp

Ex Steelers Rival Reveals Honest Take on George Pickens Skipping Out on Youth Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After the Pittsburgh Steelers traded wideout George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, a local area youth football camp reached out to him to confirm he was still good to attend this summer. Advertisement He answered affirmatively. Then, he later backed out of the camp appearance, ruffling a lot of feathers in the Pittsburgh area. On The Nightcap podcast, former Cincinnati Bengals wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh had some harsh words for the former Steeler. "He just don't give a damn," he said, "His representatives were like, 'Hey you need to do this.' He probably was like, 'No, I ain't doing it. I don't care. I ain't doing it. I don't care what you say. I'm not doing this. I think it's unfortunate because he's probably going to take a hit in his reputation. I don't think he gives a damn. But those kids, that's the part of it. They just going to be disappointed." Advertisement Thankfully for the youth football camp organizers, Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth was reportedly able to attend in Pickens' absence. But it doesn't take away from the fact that Pickens went back on his word after committing twice to the event. The Steelers traded for Seattle Seahawks receiver D.K. Metcalf earlier in the offseason, making Pickens expendable in their eyes. Pickens' time in Pittsburgh was not without issues, stemming from arguments with teammates to multiple suspensions. Now, he's in Dallas, where he hopes to rejuvenate his career and start over.
