Cal Raleigh Makes MLB History During Mariners-Twins on Friday
Cal Raleigh Makes MLB History During Mariners-Twins on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is having a month to remember. Friday night, from Seattle's T-Mobile Park, the fifth-year backstop added to his epic month by accomplishing something no other catcher has in MLB History. Advertisement With a 356-foot home run off Twins starter Zebby Matthews in the Bottom of the first, Raleigh became the first catcher in MLB history to reach 20 home runs before the end of May. Raleigh's three-run blast gave the Mariners an early 3-0 lead, but the 28-year-old wasn't done there. In the Bottom of the eighth, Raleigh added to his home run total with a two-run shot to right field off Twin's reliever Cole Sands. The 380-foot blast gave the Mariners a 6-3 lead, which they would relinquish in the ninth inning, eventually losing to the Twins 12-6 in extra innings. The home runs were Raleigh's No. 10 and 11 of the month, the second most in May behind Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, who leads MLB with 15 home runs this month. Advertisement He's on pace to hit 57 home runs this season, which would not only be a career-best, but shatter the MLB single-season record for home runs by a catcher, held by Kansas City Royals' Salvador Perez who hit 48 in 2021. A third-round draft pick by the Mariners in 2018, Raleigh made his MLB debut on July 11, 2021. Since then, he's slugged 114 career home runs. Hall of famer Mike Piazza holds the record for most career home runs by a catcher with 399. Raleigh still has one more game to add to his monthly total as the Mariners take on the Twins Saturday night from T-Mobile. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Twins Continue Hot Streak, Make History in Win Against Guardians
The three-game series between the Cleveland Guardians and the Minnesota Twins has been a strange one, to say the least. In a make-up game delayed from the night of Monday, May 19, due to inclement weather, the Guardians and Twins resumed the same game on Wednesday. Advertisement As the bad weather persisted into Tuesday, that game was also rescheduled to Wednesday afternoon and started just 30 minutes after the conclusion of the resumed game. With all of this being said, the conclusion of the first make-up game had an exciting ending with some history that was made. In a tie game that headed into the ninth inning, Twins' second baseman Kody Clemens hit a double into center field that brought pinch-runner Ryan Fitzgerald home from second. The walk-off double secured the win for the Twins and marked their 10th straight victory at home, a streak that began on April 25 against the Los Angeles Angels. Just a month ago, Minnesota had a record of 7-15 and were struggling to put wins together. Even without stars Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton, the Twins have gone 19-6 over their last 25 games and climbed to second place in the AL Central, trailing only the MLB-best Detroit Tigers. Although there's a lot of season left, it seems that the Twins have found their rhythm and will look to continue to win games. Grey Zabel threw first pitch at the Mariners game on Friday night
Part of the fun of being a first round draft pick is being paraded around as a local celebrity during the summer. Such is the case for offensive guard Grey Zabel, who was selected by the Seattle Seahawks at No. 18 overall in the 2025 NFL draft. Zabel has gone from the great plains of Fargo, ND to the Emerald City of Seattle. Safe to say his life has changed considerably in these last several weeks, as Zabel will be experiencing plenty of "firsts" in his blossoming NFL career. Next up on his "firsts" is probably throwing out the first pitch at an MLB game, which he did on Friday night. The Seattle Mariners opened the first of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins, and the man they picked to ceremoniously kick things off (so to speak) was Grey Zabel, who threw out the first pitch. Things continued well for the Mariners after Zabel's opening pitch. Star catcher Cal Raleigh opened things up with a three-run homer in the first inning, which was followed by Randy Arozarena smashing a solo-shot 377 feet to make it a 4-0 to start. The Twins eventually cut the lead to 4-3, but Raleigh struck once again with his second dinger of the night... a 380-foot blast in the eighth to make it a 6-3 ballgame. Advertisement Unfortunately, that's where the good vibes for the M's ended. Seattle's All-Star closer, Andrés Muñoz, laid an uncharacteristic egg in the ninth. Up to this point, Muñoz had not surrendered an earned run all season long, gave up three to make it a 6-6 game. Painfully, the tying-run was scored with two outs for Minnesota. From there, the meltdown was on. Seattle's relief pitcher, Casey Legumina, gave up six runs in the top of the 10th inning and the Mariners would go on to lose 12-6. This was the second-straight game for Seattle giving up six or more runs in the tenth inning. Over the last two games, the Mariners have allowed opponents to score 16 runs in the ninth and tenth innings. Yikes. Seattle has lost seven of their last ten games, and ss a result, the Mariners have been knocked from their perch atop the AL West This article originally appeared on Seahawks Wire: Seahawks OG Grey Zabel threw the first pitch at Mariners vs Twins game

Correa hits a 2-run homer in the 10th in the Twins' 12-6 comeback victory over the Mariners
Carlos Correa hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Mariners 12-6 on Friday night. Correa pounced on a first-pitch sinker from reliever Casey Legumina (4-3), sending it into the seats in left field. The Twins scored four more runs to cap off the victory. Mariners closer Andres Munoz, who had yet to give up an earned run this season, saw that accomplishment go by the wayside when Willi Castro hit a two-run home run. Trevor Larnach then tied it with an RBI single. The late Minnesota charge overshadowed a spectacular evening from Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. With a pair of home runs that upped his season total to 21, Raleigh became the first catcher in major league history to reach at least 20 home runs before the end of May. Unfortunately for Seattle, Raleigh's two and three-run home runs were not enough to stymie a Minnesota comeback and keep Twins reliever Jhoan Duran (4-1) from getting the victory. Key moment Prior to Larnach's tying single, outfielder Byron Buxton — who was reinstated from the concussion list prior to the game — stole second base. By moving into scoring position with two outs, Buxton was able to score with ease on Larnach's hit. Key stat Raleigh is the third player in franchise history to have 20 home runs before the end of May, joining Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. Up next Seattle right-hander Bryce Miller (2-4, 5.22) makes his return from the injured list Saturday night against right-hander Bailey Ober.
