Club World Cup 2025: Quarter-final line-up set as global giants eye glory, see full schedule
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has reached its business end, with the quarter-final stage promising high-stakes clashes between some of the biggest clubs across continents. After a gripping set of group stage and early knockout fixtures, eight clubs are now poised to battle it out for a place in the semi-finals and a shot at global supremacy.
This year's tournament, being staged in the United States, has drawn global attention not just for its star-studded teams, but also for its expanded format. The quarter-finals will feature teams representing different confederations, including the likes of Al-Hilal, Fluminese, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Despite some of the European heavyweights making it to the last 8, there have been some unbelievable upsets in the Round of 16 as well.
Al-Hilal pulled off a near-impossible win over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, while Fluminese upset UEFA Champions League finalists Inter.
While the fact remains that Real Madrid, Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are all left in the competition, there remains the possibility that a club outside Europe may take home the top prize.

Too soon to say if Mbappe will start against Dortmund, Alonso says
It is too soon to say whether Kylian Mbappe will start in Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (July 5, 2025), coach Xabi Alonso said, as the French forward continues his recovery from gastroenteritis. Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals after missing all of the group stage. "He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday (July 4, 2025). "Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11." Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday (July 1, 2025), earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament. Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered. Alonso's team have leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's (July 1, 2025) winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition. "I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to," said Alonso. They face a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday (July 5, 2025), after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book their spot in the final eight. "Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," said Alonso. "We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow."

Cancelo and Neves, still reeling from the shock, were seen in tears as they remembered their close friend and national teammate Jota, with whom they recently celebrated UEFA Nations League glory for Portugal. Ahead of the match, Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi said Jota's demise had impacted his team's Portuguese duo. "We all know it's a sad day because of what happened to Diogo and Andre, unfortunately, these are things that shouldn't happen, which happened," said the Italian in press conference. "As we are all aware, we have two Portuguese players, Ruben Neves and Cancelo, who were very close to the guys. Clearly today was a difficult day for everyone. We tried to work but clearly, the atmosphere today was not the same as other days. It was a tragedy," he added. Al-Hilal knocked out of FIFA Club World Cup Meanwhile, the Saudi side, Asia's last hope in the tournament, exited in the quarterfinals after falling short against Fluminense. They had stunned the footballing world earlier with a dramatic 4-3 extra-time win over Manchester City in the second round, and remained unbeaten in the group stage—including a memorable draw against Real Madrid. Though their campaign ends here, they leave with heads held high, having delivered one of the tournament's most unforgettable upsets and firmly announced themselves on the global stage. Super-sub Hercules netted his second goal in as many second-half outings, propelling Fluminense to a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals and securing their place in the FIFA Club World Cup semifinals. Fluminense could yet face an all-Brazilian semi-final if their rivals from Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, are able to overcome Premier League outfit Chelsea in Friday's other quarter-final.
