Western Mass. schools participate in Massachusetts Civics Project Showcases
The showcases started on Tuesday in Dartmouth, and 20 schools around Western Massachusetts participated in the second day of the fair on Wednesday inside the MassMutual Center in Springfield. The room was filled with poster board presentations.
Hampden DA's Office hosts 'Preventing Dating Violence' program for students
At the fair, students share their plans to solve community issues, amongst their peers and community advisors, such as local legislators and subject-matter experts. Issues included student mental health, environmental justice, and educational equity. Some projects took students a month to plan, create, and execute.
'We decided to take action basically,' said Mileska Santiheo, a junior at Sci-Tech High School. 'So we noticed that our bathrooms don't really provide any feminine products or anything, so we got donations from teachers and nurses and we built the basket up.'
The next fair will be on Monday in Worcester. The last stop of the fair will be next week in Boston.

Massachusetts to cut sales tax from items up to $2,500 during tax-free holiday
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Mark your calendars because August 9th and 10th is when the sales tax will be cut from items under $2,500 in Massachusetts. The tax-free holiday is a time for small business to boost their sales and bring in new customers looking to save money. The increase in sales during the tax-free weekend last year generated $3.54 million in indirect tax revenues due to increased economic activity, according to the Department of Revenue. During this weekend, most retail items of up to $2,500 purchased for personal use will be exempt from a 6.25 percent sales tax. This is a great opportunity for consumers to purchase items as prices on store shelves spike, driven in part by federally imposed tariffs. New trade deal with China in the works Meals Motor vehicles Motorboats Telecommunications services Gas Steam Electricity Tobacco products Marijuana or marijuana products Alcoholic beverages Any single item whose price is more than $2,500 An item of clothing is exempt from the sales tax unless the piece of clothing costs more than $175. For items that cost more than $175, the amount over $175 is only subject to tax. Any item will qualify for the tax exemption if you order and pay for an eligible item over the Internet during the tax-free weekend and during Eastern Daylight Time. No sales tax is due on that purchase, even if the delivery occurs after the sales tax holiday weekend. Layaway sales do not qualify during the tax-free weekend. In Massachusetts, all retailers must take part in the sales tax holiday. If you are taxed in error during the weekend, the business is responsible for giving you a refund of the tax you paid. The Massachusetts law was put into place in 2018, which was sponsored by Senator Adam Gómez (D-Springfield) and Representative Carole A. Fiola (D-Fall River). 'Lowering costs for Massachusetts residents and supporting local businesses is critical for our communities in this time of economic uncertainty,' said Senate President Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland). 'I'd like to thank Senator Gómez, my colleagues in the Senate and our partners in the House for their work to set this year's sales tax holiday.' 'This year's temporary suspension of the sales tax will bring consumers needed economic relief while boosting revenue for small businesses and retailers,' said House Speaker Ronald J. Mariano (D-Quincy). 'I want to thank Chair Fiola and my colleagues in the House, along with our partners in the Senate, for their annual support for this economic development initiative.' United Way hosts diaper drive to aid families in need
GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – United Way of the Franklin & Hampshire Region (UWFH) is sponsoring a diaper drive for families in need through June 30. SNAP and WIC cannot be used to buy diapers, and can cost as much as $100 per month per child, with prices continuing to rise. In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont and the Greater Boston Food Bank, around 36% of Massachusetts families with young children could not afford enough diapers for their children. Youth in Springfield showcase mental health in photo exhibit UWFH is looking to collect 20,000 diapers to distribute to 14 local agencies in their service area for families in need. While they accept all brands and sizes, donors are asked to give larger diaper sizes for children that are often harder to come by at local pantries, specifically sizes 4, 5, and 6, as well as pull-up training pants. There will be a standout on Saturday, June 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Stop & Shop in Northampton and Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Stop & Shop in Greenfield, where donations will be accepted. Greenfield Savings Bank is sponsoring the diaper driver and is matching all monetary donations up to $10,000. Youth in Springfield showcase mental health in photo exhibit
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Local youth with the Gandara Center in Springfield use photography to spark conversations about mental health. Why is this attraction billboard on I-91 in Springfield blank? Called 'Rooted in Change, United in Growth,' the youth-led photo exhibit took place at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Springfield. The center invited the public to see powerful visual stories connecting underage gambling, health struggles, and peer pressure. Organizers told 22News that it's more than just an art exhibition, it's a call to action. 'And they are given the opportunity to take photos and captions about messaging in their community, so this is the showcase of the change they want to see in their community, what's happening in their community.
