Always duck the police!

Any police van in Hyderabad reads 'We are here for you'. I find it hard to trust because my grandfather was a head police constable. He served under both British and Indian rule, and after analysing his life I've lost faith in Interpol too. The little time I saw him in uniform, he only cared about his papaya tree, his doves, and his cattle. He was more an Ace Ventura–type cop, minus the empathy or the jokes.
Here are more stories as anecdotal proof…
First bribe ever
It was my first bike in college, a brand new ride with a temporary number plate. A traffic cop stopped me and asked for my papers. I showed them, told my story, even offered the sweets I'd bought to celebrate but he wouldn't let me go without a bribe. With no cash on me, I opened my wallet to prove it. Inside was a half-torn ₹20 note, a 'pyar ki nishani' from a girl. I'd promised to exchange it later but kept it as a souvenir — classic 2009 move. The cop pocketed that note and then demanded I find the other half. I told him I'd lost it. He made me search every pocket in my wallet and bag before finally taking that half-note and with it, my only interaction with that girl.

"Pure Racism": Woman Who Helped Indian Man After Mob Attack In Ireland

Dublin: The Indian man, who was brutally attacked by a mob in Ireland's Dublin over the weekend, was falsely accused of being a paedophile before being stabbed in the face and stripped naked, according to the woman who rescued him. The incident occurred on Saturday evening in the Tallaght area in south-west Dublin, when a "gang of around 10 teenagers-- 15 to 16 years in age-- attacked him." In an emotional Facebook video, Jennifer Murray, the Irish woman who helped the Indian man, narrated the horrific details of the attack and said it wasn't the first racial incident in the area. "At least four Indian men and another man have been facially stabbed by this gang of teenagers in the last four days in Tallaght," she said in the video posted on July 20. "Your teenagers are going around stabbing innocent men in the face," she said. Murray said she was driving past a roundabout on Parkhill Road area on Saturday evening when she saw a crowd of around 30 adults and teenagers standing at a stop. When she stopped her car and got near, she saw a man there, covered in blood from "head to toe." "I saw this man standing there. His entire body was covered in blood. The blood was pouring from his head," she said. The Irish woman said the man asked for help and said, Please help me, please save me." She said she asked the crowd to step aside, took him to his car, gave him shorts and a blanket to cover himself while they waited for an hour for the police and ambulance to arrive. "They punched him in the head with what I can only say were blades between their knuckles. He went down, completely covered in blood. He's got massive injuries. The blood did not stop flowing from his nose the whole hour I sat with him," she recalled. She recalled that the victim was too traumatised and embarrassed to speak clearly. "He was so extremely polite to me the whole time. I gave him a blanket to cover himself up. He was so embarrassed and shocked," she said. Murray said the man, who looked to be in his 40s, told her that he was walking down to a temple when he was attacked from behind by "these absolute scumbags". "They stripped him of his clothes. They took his trousers off him. They took his underwear. They took his shoes. They took his phone. They took his bank cards. They took everything. They left him for dead... they very, very easily could have killed him with what they did," she said. According to the woman, the gang that attacked the Indian man concocted a fake story about him being a pedophile who was found with his pants down in a playground to justify their attack. However, that narrative was soon rejected by her, as the man was "miles" away from that playground. Murray repeatedly emphasised that the man was "very nice", "polite" and "gentle" as she accused the attackers of cooking up a narrative so the community would turn a blind eye to their racially-motivated attack. "I knew that man had not done that. I knew straight away," she said. Murray said the Indian man told her he was an Amazon employee and arrived in Ireland only a week ago. He has a wife and an 11-month-old baby back home in India, and was staying in Dublin at a friend's family. In a statement to The Journal, Murray said she believed the incident was "pure racism, leading to innocent people being attacked."

‘Will I Have To Prove My Identity Every Time?' Bongaon Voter Detained In Haryana Alleges Harassment

Last Updated: Najmul said he was detained despite providing all original identification documents and is now uncertain about his future in the state For Najmul, a registered voter from West Bengal's Bongaon, life in Haryana was peaceful. He had moved to the state four months ago for a housekeeping job and also brought his parents with him. However, on July 19, Najmul's calm life took a turn for the worse, leaving the family traumatised. According to Najmul, police arrived at his residence in Haryana last week and asked him to show his identity documents. 'I showed them all my IDs," he told News18. However, he was asked to accompany the cops for further verification. 'They made us sit under a tree. Then the police asked me, 'When did you come from Bangladesh?' I was shocked. I am a bonafide Indian citizen. Why were they accusing me like this?" Najmul asked. He added that he was not the only one detained. 'There were others from Murshidabad and Malda who were also brought there," he said. Najmul claimed his father came to meet him that night with original copies of all their documents, but was not allowed to hand them over. He also alleged that he was not given any food until the next morning. Najmul's biggest worry now is the uncertainty that looms over his future. 'We come to Haryana for work. This time they picked me up and kept me for five days. If they pick me up again, will I have to prove myself every time? How many times will we face this harassment?" he asked. On Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had condemned the BJP after the Gurugram administration in Haryana detained 52 Bengali-speaking migrant workers on suspicion that they were illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and sought background verification reports from the Bengal government. Addressing a press conference, Banerjee said: 'It is our duty to protect citizens. If the BJP thinks this is how it can delete the names of voters and win elections, as it did in Delhi and Maharashtra, then it is making a big mistake." The chief minister is slated to begin a year-long 'Bhasha Andolan" from July 27 to protest against the detention of Bengali-speaking individuals in BJP-ruled states. Massive wildfire destroys homes in Cyprus, 2 bodies found in burned-out car

Nicosia (Cyprus), Jul 24 (AP) Police in Cyprus found two bodies inside a burned-out car Thursday after a massive wildfire scorched 100 square kilometres of forested hillsides, destroyed numerous homes and forced the evacuation of a dozen villages on the southern side of the island nation's Troodos mountain range. Police initially reported late Wednesday that Civil Defence personnel found the charred body of a single individual inside the vehicle on a main road connecting fire-hit hillside villages. But a second body was discovered early Thursday morning, and police said identification efforts are ongoing. Photos posted on social media purported to show the victims' gutted vehicle on the shoulder of the main Monagri-Alassa road. Fire Service Spokesman Andreas Kettis told state-run Cyprus News Agency there are currently no active fronts, but fire crews were still battling numerous flare-ups, and winds are expected to pick up later in the day. Up to 14 aircraft are resuming water drops over hard-to-reach areas. Cyprus' Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis told the state broadcaster that more than 100 people who were evacuated from fire-hit communities are being hosted in temporary shelters. The fire forced the evacuation of 14 villages along a 14-kilometre stretch of mountainous terrain. Media reports showed gutted homes smouldering as flames swept through the outskirts of some villages. In the village of Lofou, at least 20 homes were destroyed as fires threatened a group of stranded evacuees whose police buses had to turn back as the fire front shifted to block their exit. Images broadcast on media late Wednesday showed flames consuming trees, brush and other vegetation along a huge front burning bright orange against the backdrop of a nighttime sky. Police continued to block road access to the fire-afflicted communities as area residents vented against what they called a disorganised response to the huge fire. Government spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis said Spain would be sending two firefighting aircraft Thursday morning to assist local crews. Jordan is helping with two of its own helicopters, which had been deployed in Cyprus for firefighting. An RAF Chinook helicopter that operates from one of two British Bases on Cyprus is also assisting. Limassol Municipality and the local soccer club Apollonas offered apartments and a basketball court, respectively, to temporarily house evacuees. Cyprus has been on high alert for fires this summer after three consecutive arid winters.
