Padraig Harrington plays bogey-free at Sunningdale and builds 1-shot lead in Senior British Open

Yahoo3 days ago
BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Padraig Harrington birdied his last hole Friday for a 5-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead in the Senior British Open as he goes for his second senior major title of the year.
Defending champion K.J. Choi had the lead late in the second round on the Old Course at Sunningdale until he took bogeys on the 16 and 17th. Choi had to settle for a 67 and was one shot behind along with Thomas Bjorn, who had a 63.
Harrington is trying to become the fifth player to win the British Open and the Senior British Open.
'Where I should make a score I scored, and then I got in trouble on plenty of other holes,' Harrington said. 'Hit some recovery shots and managed my game, but I never showed much confidence out there at all in my swing at all. I obviously like these 72-hole ones, and the bigger golf courses suit me.'
The Senior British Open is the fifth major on the PGA Tour Champions. The regular tournaments are 54 holes. Harrington won the U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor in Colorado.
Bjorn was an angry Dane on Friday and it worked in his favor. He was furious with himself for ruining a good start in the opening round with three bogeys over the last four holes. He channeled that frustration into four birdies in five holes at the start. He made eagle on the 320-yard 11th. And after dropping shots on the 16th and 17th holes, he finished with a birdie.
'Just got out here in that mode of I know I played well yesterday and I was hitting the ball well. I knew I was playing well, but I was just angry,' Bjorn said. 'Wanted to get off to a start and hit a great shot on 2, which it's not like a given birdie, and then I hit some good shots from there.
'The first 12 holes was just an absolute joy.'
Among those two shots behind were Ernie Els and Justin Leonard, who made the cut in the British Open last week at Royal Portrush.

Chloe Kelly among four England players in Euro 2025 team of the tournament despite starting zero games

Lionesses super-sub Chloe Kelly is among the England quartet to feature in the Euro 2025 team of the tournament after guiding her side to back-to-back European Championships. Having also proved the match-winner three years earlier at Wembley, Kelly fired in the deciding penalty in the final's shootout to retain England's crown and down world champions Spain. Kelly has been hailed for her contributions in England's triumph after providing game-deciding contributions in all of England's Euro 2025 knockout matches. Her crosses led to both goals in the quickfire comeback against Sweden, before bagging a 119th-minute winner in England's semi-final win over Italy. She then assisted Alessia Russo's equaliser in the final before slotting home the winning spot-kick. All of her heroics, however, came off the bench, with Kelly not starting a single game for Sarina Wiegman in the tournament. With it evident that she doesn't need a starting berth to do the damage, she has remarkably earned a place in Uefa's team of the tournament, despite her comparably inferior average game-time. Kelly is joined by fellow final hero Hannah Hampton in the team, who made two superb saves in the shootout that saw England overcome Spain 3-1 on penalties. Lucy Bronze has also been named for her contributions, with it emerging after the final that the Chelsea right-back played the entire tournament with a fractured leg. Completing the England foursome is Russo, who started up top for all six games for Wiegman, ever-present in the Lionesses' success. England's fellow finalists make up much of the rest of the ultimate XI, with Spain similarly boasting four players. The midfield three of Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas and Patricia Guijarro are all named in the team of the tournament, while centre-back Irene Paredes is also included. Germany duo Jule Brand and Frankziska Kett earn their respective places, with Italy's Elena Linari rounding out the star-studded team.

Liverpool forward CONVINCED Richard Hughes to sell Luis Diaz

Liverpool will soon wrap up a €75m deal which sees Luis Diaz join Bayern Munich. The Colombia winger, 28, joined the Reds back in 2022 for an initial fee of £37.5m (€45m) and his signing has largely been a success. Diaz has won all the major honours in the domestic game - contributing 13 goals en route to the Premier League title last season. LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Arne Slot opted to use the forward in two different positions during the title-winning campaign - wide on the left as well as in a false 9 role. But with two years left on his contract - and no prospect of a renewal - the time has come for a parting of the ways. Sporting director Richard Hughes has done great business - effectively doubling Liverpool's money on Diaz. Liverpool well-covered on left wing It had been speculated that the Reds could go into the market for a direct replacement - with Rodrygo among the options mentioned. However, according to a new report from James Pearce in the Athletic it appears Liverpool will instead spend the Diaz fee on ANOTHER target - most probably Alexander Isak. That's because the club believe that the current options they possess on the left are sufficient with Cody Gakpo, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz all capable of filling in. And the emergence of , meanwhile, may be the key factor in the Anfield club declining the opportunity to sign a left winger. Ngumoha a factor in Diaz decision 'Liverpool believe they have sufficient left-sided cover already in place," the report reads. 'Cody Gakpo, who scored 18 goals in all competitions last season, is expected to kick on and play an even bigger part. 'New signing Hugo Ekitike can operate off that flank as well as through the middle, while the emergence of Rio Ngumoha is another factor. 'It would be wrong to expect too much from Nguhoma given he doesn't even turn 17 for another month, but he's a massive talent. 'He has lit up pre-season and you don't want to block his pathway.' © IMAGO - Rio Ngumoha Liverpool

How did Bronze play Euro 2025 with fractured tibia?

Can a professional footballer play with a fractured leg? Following Sunday's Euro 2025 final win over Spain, England defender Lucy Bronze revealed she had done just that, saying: "I actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia, but no-one knew." Mum Diana Bronze said the Chelsea full-back suffered the injury in June but she still started all six of the Lionesses' games in Switzerland and was a key reason for their success. "We've known all the time. We knew the medics had checked it, and they knew what they were doing," Diana Bronze told BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour. "I think a lot of the girls knew and not a whisper got out." What is a tibia fracture? Dr Mark Bowditch, President of the British Orthopaedic Association told BBC Sport that a tibia is, "the shin bone and the main weight bearing bone from the knee to the ankle". "Fractures of the tibia range from partial break, such as a stress or fatigue split, through to a complete break and separation," the consultant knee and sports surgeon added. "A complete break is the high-energy sudden injury from a fall from a height, twist or direct blow, such as a studs-up tackle. You cannot continue to play on or even walk on a complete break. "Stress/fatigue fractures - which is likely to be the type Lucy Bronze has - are low-energy repeated injury and usually seen in athletes or army personnel. "They normally present with pain after activity, rather than a sudden incident." Following Sunday's final, England manager Sarina Wiegman said that Bronze, "had some issues with her tibia so of course we tried to manage that". Nick Worth, who was England men's under-21 team physiotherapist between 2000-2003, told BBC Sport that Wiegman's comments further corroborate the view that the defender's injury was a stress reaction, rather than a clean break. But BBC Sport do not yet know the full extent of the injury. How could Bronze play with a fracture? The 33-year-old played 598 minutes across the tournament, with only Keira Walsh, Alex Greenwood and Hannah Hampton playing more for Wiegman's side. Dr Bowditch called it, "remarkable" Bronze was able to play so much tournament football. "She probably has had to reduce the amount of training she has done in between games or train in a low weight-bearing environment such as a swimming pool or anti-gravity trainer," he suggested. "It's a great tribute to Dr Ritan Mehta and Lionesses medical team that they have managed to keep Lucy going." Worth believes that Bronze's decision to play through her injury would have been based on a calculation of risk vs reward, made in collaboration with the Lionesses' medical team. "No doubt she's been exceptionally brave, you can't underestimate the mentality and resilience to do that," he added. "But it must be a manageable injury to enable her to do that." 'She'll not let the pain get in the way' Bronze's aunt, Julie Tough, told BBC 5 Live: "Lucy wouldn't damage her body but she'll play through pain if she thinks she's not going to do anything worse to it. "She'll not let the pain get in the way." Painkillers and anti-inflammatories may have helped Bronze manage her pain during games, as well as perhaps using different insoles in her boots to enable her to offload weight on the injured leg. Bronze's mum Diane added: "The medics had checked it and they knew what they were doing, and so does she because she did a sports science degree." "She reads research papers and things. She knows about injuries. That's how she can keep going." The defender, who was England's oldest player at the tournament, managed 105 minutes in Sunday's showpiece final, before leaving the pitch in tears as she was forced off with a separate injury to her right knee. Wiegman praised her attitude afterwards, saying: "The whole team has a great mentality but she has a crazy mentality, it's unbelievable." Worth told BBC Sport that pain is experienced subjectively. "What Lucy has shown is that bit extra - she's an exceptional individual, and not everyone would do that," he said. "She knows her own body, and I have no doubt she would speak up if something isn't right." During the quarter-final against Sweden, Bronze was shown on camera self-strapping support around her right leg during a break in play. Worth suggested that this is unlikely to be related to her fractured tibia. What could Bronze's recovery look like? It is difficult to say, without knowing the full extent of the injury. Dr Bowditch told BBC Sport that the worst thing that could have happened was that, "the partial break progressed into a full break and the bone effectively snapped." "This fortunately hasn't happened," he said. "It may need a prolonged time off to allow it to heal itself or she may need surgery to try to help the bone heal properly" Worth suggested that Bronze should hopefully not face any long-term consequences after playing during the tournament, and the most important thing now will be rest. While she will need to offload the tibia a little bit, Bronze should be able to continue with work in the gym and the pool, and that weight-bearing can help the healing. "Bones heal in the lines of stress, so in a converse way, putting weight on a fracture at the right time can help with healing." This article is the latest from BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team.
