Nicolas Gagnon named set-piece coach for Canadian men's soccer team
Canada coach Jesse Marsch has added set-piece coach Nicolas Gagnon to his staff.
Gagnon most recently worked in England for Southampton, which is headed back to England's second-tier Championship after a season in the Premier League.
Gagnon, who attended the University of Sherbrooke, worked for CF Montreal from 2012 to 2021, working with the academy and coaching the under-17 team before finishing his time there as coach of the club's reserve side.
He then set up his own set-piece consulting service.
In late 2023, he spent four months as set piece coach for Turkey's second-division side Goztepe, leaving the job early because of a family matter back home. When he was ready to return, club owner Sport Republic offered him a job instead at Southampton, which it also owned, in October 2024.
Before joining Montreal, Gagnon was an educator with the Regional Associations of Richelieu-Yamaska, the South Shore and the Eastern Townships programs.
Gagnon joins Mauro Biello, Ewan Sharp and Pierre Barrieu as permanent members of Marsch's staff.
Paolo Ceccarelli serves as part-time goalkeeper coach with Marsch bringing in a variety of guest coaches, from former striker Dwayne De Rosario and Halifax Wanderers coach Patrice Gheisar to Canadian women's coach Casey Stoney, for camps.

Baltimore Ravens star running back Derrick Henry has an offer from Adam Sandler, his favorite actor, to be cast in a movie if the five-time Pro Bowl selection rushes for 2,000 yards this season. The offer grew out of Henry's appearance on radio personality Dan Patrick's show this week to discuss his $30 million, two-year contract extension. Patrick told Henry he would get him in a Sandler movie if he made NFL history with a second 2,000-yard season. Two days later, Sandler made the offer himself in a video shown to Henry on the practice field. 'That's my dawg,' a wide-smiling Henry said while watching the video. Sandler, star of 'Happy Gilmore' and the remake of 'The Longest Yard' along with 'The Waterboy,' said he was in a hotel room while filming his greeting for Henry. At one point, Sandler turned the camera to show his bulldog. 'Two thousand yards-plus this year not only gets you in a movie, but we'll have a nice dinner together and talk about Dan Patrick's facial hair and how hard it is for him to grow it,' Sandler joked in a video posted Friday. 'I love ya and keep it up.' Sandler came up during Patrick's interview with Henry because Patrick was hearing a hoodie for the soon-to-be-released 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Sandler had given Patrick the hoodie. 'Can you do me a favor?' Henry asked Patrick. 'If you ever see him again, tell him I'm a really big fan and would really love to meet him one day.' Vancouver's Richard T. Lee, third on Asian Tour, tied for third at RBC Canadian Open
CALEDON — After Richard T. Lee's first round of the RBC Canadian Open his wife was telling him how on the PGA Tour's app a fireball appears beside a golfer's name on the leaderboard. That small mental image was enough to fuel Lee on Friday, as he fired a 6-under 64 in the tournament's second round to briefly hold a tie for second. He and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford finished the day in a four-way tie for third at 9 under, three shots back of American Cameron Champ. 'I was thinking about that all today, and I was like, 'oh, I want to see a fireball next to my name again,'' said Lee, smiling by the clubhouse at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. The 34-year-old Lee was born in Richmond Hill, Ont., but moved to Vancouver when he was just a year old. He has been playing golf on the Asian Tour for most of his professional career and is currently third on its order of merit. Golf Canada often invites the best Canadian golfers from around the world to play in the national men's championship but Lee, until Friday, had never made the cut. That hasn't stopped him from aspiring to play in North America's top men's golf circuit, however. 'It's the PGA Tour,' said Lee, adding that he plans to enter the PGA Tour's qualifying school again. 'Any kid out there wants to play out here and perform the way of all the best players out there.' A group of eight Canadians made the cut at the national men's golf championship on Friday, matching the record previously set in 2023 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto and again at Hamilton Golf and Country Club last year. Soroka and Call help the Nationals beat the Rangers 2-0
WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Soroka struck out seven in six sparkling innings, and the Washington Nationals beat Patrick Corbin and the Texas Rangers 2-0 on Friday night. Soroka (3-3) allowed two hits and walked one. Brad Lord and Jose A. Ferrer each got three outs before Kyle Finnegan finished the two-hitter for his 18th save. The speedy game was over in 1 hour, 50 minutes. Adolis García singled with two outs in the fifth for Texas' first hit. Josh Smith added a one-out single in the sixth for the Rangers in their fourth consecutive loss.
