July 9 (UPI) -- SpongeBob and Patrick head to the Underworld, "where no Sponge has gone before," in a teaser for The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, which arrives in theaters Dec. 19.
The trailer released Wednesday shows the duo dressing up as pirates and facing odd creatures in the Underworld, which is "not for the faint of heart."
"Desperate to be a big guy, SpongeBob sets out to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs by following The Flying Dutchman -- a mysterious swashbuckling ghost pirate," an official synopsis says.
The animated film is inspired by Stephen Hillenburg's SpongeBob SquarePants series, which premiered in 1999.
Voice cast members include Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence, George Lopez, Isis "Ice Spice" Gaston, Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola, Regina Hall and Mark Hamill.
Search for SquarePants is the fourth SpongeBob movie and the first to be released since Sponge on the Run in 2020.

Comedian Matt Rife says he bought 'Conjuring' house, occult museum

File Photo by Jim Ruymen/UPI | License Photo Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Comedian Matt Rife has announced he bought the Connecticut house and occult museum that belonged to the late Ed and Lorraine Warren, whose paranormal adventures are featured in the Conjuring, Annabelle and Nun horror movies. "I have officially purchased Ed and Lorraine Warren's home and Occult Museum, including being the legal guardian for at least the next 5 years, of the entire haunted collection including THE ANNABELLE DOLL, with my good friend @eltoncastee!!" Rife posted on Instagram, along with a photo of him and Castee posing with the supposedly demonic doll and other photos of the Warrens at home. "If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the paranormal and all things haunted. You also may know The Conjuring films are my favorite scary movies of all time. So I'm incredibly honored to have taken over one of the most prominent properties in paranormal history. Ed and Lorain Warren arguably put demonology and paranormal into the mainstream and are the very heart of some of the most famous haunted stories of all time, The Conjuring House, Amityville Horror, et..." Rife said he and Castee plan to open the house for overnight stays and the museum for tours some time in the near future. The Conjuring Universe began in 2013 with The Conjuring and was followed by numerous sequels and spin-offs featuring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Conjuring: Last Rites is set for theatrical release on Sept. 5. Ed died in 2006 and Lorraine died in 2019. The Hollywood Reporter said the house had been open to the public until Lorraine's death, but closed afterwards due to zoning issues.

A Solid Debut for ‘The Naked Gun'

Save the comedy! That's the message Paramount Pictures was selling ahead of this weekend's opening of 'The Naked Gun,' a sequel to the 1980-90s franchise and one of the few comedy films getting a theatrical release this year. Saved for now … perhaps? The film generated neither blockbuster nor belly-flop results over the weekend, with an estimated $17 million in box office receipts. But the film has received strong reviews — a 90 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- grade on CinemaScore, an exit polling system. And executives at Paramount Pictures think those reviews combined with positive word of mouth will easily help the studio recoup its investment in the film. The comedy, from director Akiva Schaffer, cost $42 million to make with tens of millions more spent to market it. Theatrical comedy is the genre that has been most decimated by the streaming era, and the one that comedians and comedy writers desperately want to return to the big screen. These films began falling off in 2010, according to David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter on box office numbers. Today, the genre generates less than half the box office revenue it once did. How you define a comedy determines how many comedies have been released this year. To some, 'The Naked Gun,' starring Liam Neeson as the bumbling Los Angeles police officer Frank Drebin Jr., is only the second straight-up comedy to hit theaters this calendar year. (Sony Pictures' 'One of Them Days,' released in January, is the other.) Another comedy, the PG-rated 'Freakier Friday' from Disney, will come out next weekend. 'For those of you who don't remember the original 'Naked Gun,' there used to be these movies called comedies,' one of the film's producers, the 'Family Guy' creator Seth MacFarlane, said at a screening in Los Angeles. 'It's been so long since one came out that Paramount asked me to explain to you that it is supposed to be funny, just so you're not confused.' Some comedies on streaming services have found huge audiences. 'Happy Gilmore 2,' a sequel to a 1996 film, became Adam Sandler's most-watched film on Netflix in recent weeks. The streaming company reported that 47 million people tuned in during its first weekend on the service. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
