More Scared of Going Broke Than Dying? 9 Ways To Beat Retirement Anxiety
Most people don't like thinking about death but for many, the idea of running out of money in retirement is even scarier.
A new study from Allianz Life found that 64% of Americans feel stressed about the possibility of outliving their savings, a fear that cuts across age groups and financial backgrounds.
Janeil Pierre, an accredited financial counselor and the author of 'The Money Confidence Code,' said it's not just a fear rooted in financial hardship, but 'the emotional and psychological toll of watching one's quality of life decline after decades of work.'
Pierre and other experts offer some tips to beat this anxiety by being prepared.

Clarity is the first step, Pierre said. 'Define what a financially secure future looks and feels like for you. Do you want to travel, downsize, support family or simply maintain your current lifestyle? Having a clear vision provides a foundation for action.'
Robert R. Johnson, PhD, a certified financial analyst and professor of finance in the Heider College of Business at Creighton University, refers to this as 'a roadmap,' or an 'investment policy statement' (IPS), a tool that 'takes into account the investor's time horizon, risk tolerance, goals and objectives and unique circumstances. An IPS is unique to an individual.'
Once that's in place, calculate your retirement needs, create a plan, automate your savings and regularly check your progress. The more intentional you are, the more empowered you'll feel, Pierre suggested.

Another approach is to work backward, Johnson said. 'That is, they need to establish a budget in retirement and calculate how much they need to save and invest to achieve that goal.'
Using a reliable online calculator, such as the one on Calculator.net or Fidelity, can help, Pierre added. 'Aim to replace 70%-80% of your pre-retirement income annually in retirement; personalized tools will give you a clearer picture,' she said. Knowledge replaces fear.
Additionally, determine a realistic budget, Johnson said. 'Oftentimes, people underestimate their expenses in retirement.'
Guaranteed income sources, such as Social Security, pensions or certain types of annuities, can provide peace of mind due to their stable and predictable cash flow, regardless of market conditions, Pierre said.
'Knowing you have a fixed amount coming in each month helps cover non-negotiable expenses and reduces dependence on investment withdrawals during market downturns.'
Johnson warned, however, that while Social Security may be consistent or reliable, it's likely not enough to retire on for most people.
Pierre pointed out that 'money is a mindset long before it's just numbers. A person's beliefs about money directly impact their relationship with it and the reality they experience.'
She urged retirees to stop viewing money as something to fear and start seeing it as a tool. 'Fear often arises from not knowing your numbers or feeling ashamed of your past decisions. However, your financial data is just that — data. It tells a story, but it doesn't define your future.'
One of the the most significant expense in retirement, and one of the least predictable, is healthcare, Pierre pointed out, so pre-retirees should:
Contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) if eligible, as it offers triple tax advantages.
Estimate healthcare costs realistically. A 65-year-old couple retiring today may need upwards of $300,000 for healthcare in retirement, according to Fidelity.
Consider long-term care insurance, especially if there's a family history of chronic illness.
Include healthcare premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses in your retirement budget.
Grasping your safe withdrawal rate is very important, as well, Pierre said. 'Withdraw no more than 4% of your retirement portfolio annually, as a starting point. However, it's wise to personalize that amount based on your lifestyle, inflation and market performance.'
Retirees may also want to opt for bucketing strategies, where your money is segmented into short-, medium- and long-term needs, can help avoid overspending and hoarding cash out of fear.
'The more visibility and structure you have, the more confidently you can spend,' Pierre said.
Working part time or postponing full retirement can alleviate financial pressure and anxiety, depending on a person's overall situation and needs, Pierre said.
'Engaging in part-time work can also provide structure, purpose and social connection, all essential for emotional well-being in retirement,' she pointed out.
Pierre recommended a few key habits that can make sure you're on track for retirement:
Conducting annual or semi-annual financial reviews to check progress and adjust for new life events.
Working with a financial planner or retirement coach to get personalized guidance.
Using a retirement tracking app, such as Personal Capital or Empower, to stay informed on net worth, income projections and expenses.
Creating a written retirement plan, including income sources, withdrawal strategy, healthcare costs and legacy planning.
These habits foster confidence, clarity and a sense of control, replacing fear with strategy.
Don't just save — make your money work harder for you, according to Cetin Duransoy, CEO at Raisin GmbH. 'Not all bank accounts are created equal. You can prioritize safe, guaranteed investments like CDs and high-yield savings accounts to earn interest and fight inflation,' he said.
Even modest amounts can grow meaningfully over time when placed in competitive, insured savings products, and that kind of consistency is key in a high-cost environment.
Overall, remember there are easy ways to improve your financial footing if you know where to look, and every adjustment now helps protect your retirement goals later. Most importantly, don't panic — strategize.

Palm Beach Police: 'SIM swap' scam tried to steal more than $200,000 from Palm Beacher
Two Westlake residents have been arrested by Palm Beach Police, who say the pair executed an elaborate financial fraud known as "SIM swapping" that attempted to steal more than $200,000 from a Palm Beach resident. And the scheme could extend far beyond the island, police said. The pair were taken into custody May 28, Palm Beach Police spokesman Capt. Will Rothrock said. A 29-year-old woman faces charges of organized fraud and fraudulent use of personal information of a person age 60 or older, and a 31-year-old man was arrested on a charge of fraudulent use of personal information, according to arrest reports. Both remained at the Palm Beach County Jail on May 29. The woman was held without bond, and a Palm Beach County judge ordered that she have no contact with the Palm Beach resident or the man arrested in the case, according to court records. She also cannot have any devices that can access the internet, and she is not allowed to use the phone except to contact her attorney, court records show. The man's bond amount was set at $350,000, and he also cannot use or have any devices that connect to the internet, court records show. He was directed not to contact the Palm Beach resident or the woman, and while in jail, he cannot use the phone except to contact an attorney, according to court records. If he makes bond, he will be on in-home arrest with a GPS monitor, records show. On April 10, a Palm Beach resident called police to say someone had fraudulently accessed his AT&T and bank accounts, and had tried to transfer money and login to several websites, according to an arrest report. The Palm Beach resident said he received a call on April 8 from someone who said they were with AT&T, and that he needed to validate his phone numbers using a code sent to him via text message, an arrest report said. About 20 minutes after that phone call, phone numbers connected to the resident's AT&T account stopped working, police said. The scam is known as "SIM swapping" or "SIM hijacking," according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center, also called the IC3. Fraudsters will gain control of a person's phone number and then use it to access their banking and other financial and personal accounts, the agency said. The resident provided the code that he received to the person, but later discovered that the code was used to forward his phone number to a different provider, Verizon, police said. By giving that code to the person who said they were from AT&T, he allowed them to complete the final step to move all three of the phone numbers on his account to the other carrier, police wrote in the arrest report. In 2024, there were 982 complaints of SIM swapping with a total reported loss of $25,983,946, the IC3 said in its annual report. The previous year, 1,075 SIM swapping complaints were made with a reported loss of $48,798,103, according to the IC3. Once the phone numbers were transferred, someone tried to withdraw money and make a wire transfer from the Palm Beach resident's bank account, police said. Someone also successfully took over one of the man's email accounts. Transactions made through the resident's accounts included $2,300 sent via Zelle to a St. Petersburg resident, $77.97 spent at a Circle K in The Acreage, $1,500 in ATM withdrawals, and a $215 Venmo payment, an arrest report said. There was also a $4,006.08 payment made to designer clothing retailer Farfetch U.K., along with Airbnb charges of $2,341.79 and $660, an arrest report said. Because the resident was concerned that his Apple account had been compromised, he used the "Find My" feature on his iPhone, which can be used to locate devices connected to an Apple account, police said. The resident saw an unknown iPhone on Liberty Lane in Westlake and told police that he has never been to that address and has no connections there. A Palm Beach Police detective later drove by that address several times and saw two vehicles, a 2022 black Cadillac Escalade and 2024 gray BMW SUV, parked there. Both vehicles were registered to the 31-year-old man, whose driver's license lists an address in North Lauderdale but who police learned was staying at the house in Westlake with the 29-year-old woman, who shares registration on the BMW SUV. Palm Beach Police detectives discovered that the ATM withdrawals from the resident's account were made at a bank in The Acreage, about 2 miles from the house in Westlake, an arrest report said. On April 9, the Palm Beach resident received a request to wire transfer $138,237, which was unsuccessful, police said. That same day, there was another request for a wire transfer for $82,469. The banker in that case confirmed the wire with who he believed to be the account holder, and the transfer was initiated, police said. However, once the resident received an email to confirm the transfer, he called the bank's fraud team and was able to secure the money, but it could take up to three months to get that money back, the arrest report said. Both wire transfer requests were made to a Pompano Beach resident, police said. The resident hired a private investigator who recovered photos taken by the Liberty Lane-located iPhone after someone took over the resident's Apple account, police said. Data for seven photos show all were taken at that home in Westlake, according to the arrest report. On May 7, a Palm Beach Police detective talked with a person in Las Vegas, Nevada, who had been the victim of a similar scheme and had reported the crime to the FBI. That person gave police about 50 images someone took after gaining control of his Apple account, and officers found data that connected the photos back to the Westlake address. The images provided by the person in Nevada also included photos of driver's licenses, passports, bank account numbers, emails and more, an arrest report said. When Palm Beach Police and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office searched the Westlake home on a warrant on May 5, they found the 29-year-old woman and 31-year-old man, along with a Louis Vuitton backpack, three iPhones, two pairs of sunglasses and a yellow notebook with "Work $" written on it, the arrest report said. Inside the notebook, officers said they found bank account details, Social Security numbers, addresses, names and more personal details about more than 50 people in Florida and across the United States. Officers also said they found electronic devices and a ledger that contained the Palm Beach resident's personal information. They also took $15,243 in cash from the woman's bedroom, the arrest report said. Detectives determined that once the couple gained access to a person's phone line, they could "circumvent two-factor authentication and gain access to victims' financial accounts, resulting in substantial unauthorized wire transfers and fraudulent transactions," the arrest report said. Palm Beach has cautioned residents to be wary of potential scams. "Most of these cases nationally go unsolved," Rothrock said. "The work and tenacity that our detectives put into this to follow the leads to the end and bring a successful conclusion are noteworthy." He added that the department is grateful for PBSO's help in the investigation, including to serve the search warrant. "Finding local perpetrators was a rarity and did make the investigation coordination smoother," Rothrock said. Those who believe they may have been victims of the scam should call the Palm Beach Police Department's non-emergency number at 561-838-5454, he said. This story was updated to add new information. A winding new bridge connects Honolulu's downtown to the beach
Honolulu's coastal Ala Moana Boulevard is a critical road in the Hawaiian capital, but it's also a major hindrance. With six lanes of fast-moving traffic and few easily accessible crossing points, it's effectively a hurdle between the city and its main public space, Ala Moana Park, and the broad beach there. Now, a stunning new pedestrian bridge has opened to make it easier to cross that rushing road. Winding its way from the edge of downtown Honolulu over the highway to a boat harbor and the corner of Ala Moana Park, the pedestrian bridge is an elegant piece of urban infrastructure, accented by artwork and connected to a series of paths cutting through a lush tropical landscape. It's part of Victoria Ward Park, a two-phase publicly accessible open space connected to Ward Village, the 60-acre mixed use development that aims to redefine the urban realm in this part of the city. Developed by Howard Hughes, Ward Village is a blank slate development on former warehouse land that will add, over the course of decades, more than 5,000 units of housing, nearly 1 million square feet of retail, and more than three acres of public greenspace. Several condo buildings are fully occupied and many future condos are already pre-sold, representing more than $6 billion in revenue, according to Howard Hughes' 2024 annual report. Beyond its Honolulu project, the company made more than $1.75 billion in revenue in 2024, according to Pitchbook. Building a bridge to downtown Greenspace, primarily in the form of Victoria Ward Park, is a key part of the company's strategy for luring residents and businesses, and turning Ward Village into a new model for urban development in Honolulu. 'A goal for Ward Village is to make the overall neighborhood significantly more walkable, comfortable, and safe,' says Doug Johnstone, president of the Hawaii region for Howard Hughes. Born and raised in Honolulu, Johnstone says that while the city is full of world-class amenities, its urban realm can sometimes be lacking. 'It's inherently a little disjointed and difficult to get around,' Johnstone says. That's why the Ward Village development—estimated to cost several billion dollars over a planned implementation period that runs through the 2030s—set aside the space for the park, and spent a considerable amount of time coordinating with state and local officials to get the pedestrian bridge built. Costing a total of $17.8 million, the bridge is technically a project of the state's Department of Transportation. It was mostly funded by a federal grant, and Howard Hughes helped pay for the 20% portion of the budget required from local sources, donating land, funding the bridge design and providing environmental documentation. 'There's a lot of folks wearing different hats that are trying to see it through, and making sure also it's done well aesthetically and experience-wise,' Johnstone says. 'It's complementary to what we're doing in Ward Village, but also something Honolulu can be proud of.' Ocean-to-inland Making the bridge possible is the existence of Victoria Ward Park, which was designed by Vita Planning and Landscape Architecture. The first phase of the park covers 1.4 acres from the edge of Ala Moana Boulevard inland, and is now open. The second phase, covering roughly 2 acres higher inland and more nestled in the Ward Village development, will finish construction later this year. This ocean-to-inland connection became a guiding concept for the Honolulu park's design, according to Don Vita, founder of Vita Planning and Landscape Architecture. 'Going back and forth from the ocean up to the mountains is a very important cultural orientation in Hawaii and that's exactly what we did with the configuration and the location of the park,' he says. The section of the park closest to the ocean is more of a natural experience, inspired by the ecology of the region and the plants that were brought to Hawaii on canoes by its first settlers. Connecting to the pedestrian bridge, there are winding paths that slope up through this section of the park, passing by densely planted section and water features that reference the brackish ponds that would form on the shoreline. A large berm was created at the edge of the park as it approaches Ala Moana Boulevard, referencing the beach sand but also forming a buffer. 'It encloses the space so that you could have this very calming respite from the active urban activities that Honolulu offers,' Vita says. Higher up in the development and bisected by a road, the second section of the park will be more active, with space for vendors, events, and a playground. Having a street go through the space 'at first was kind of a challenge,' Vita says. 'We thought about it and it actually helped to tell the story of a passive and a more active space, and helped define those accordingly.' Creating publicly accessible space has become a strategy for Howard Hughes, which has included more than 270 parks and recreation spaces within its community development projects across the U.S., including in Summerlin, Nevada, and in the Houston area. In Honolulu, the new park space expands that ethos. But it's still in a bit of a gray zone as a privately-owned space that is publicly accessible. Vita says that unique condition influenced the design of the park and he creation of what he calls visual permeability. 'When people feel they're in a place that others are looking at them, they tend to behave a little better,' he says. 'Along with that visual permeability there's actual physical permeability. We made the spaces very free flowing so it doesn't feel you can't come here.' Making a new connection to the beach—and, conversely, reconnecting the beach to the city—is a way of giving downtown residents more access to the natural amenities of the area without expanding the city's developmental footprint or sprawling beyond its edges. 'What we've been doing over the years is trying to really advance smart growth in Honolulu,' Johnstone says. 'We want to really protect the environment and things that make it special and unique… The saying goes, if you want to keep the country country, you need to make the town town. And we're doing a bit of that here.'
