He said the sharp rise reflected growing awareness among parents, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers, and those unable to pursue higher education about the advantages of TVET, particularly its potential for high-paying careers.
"They found that TVET graduates can earn premium salaries, which are not bound by the government's minimum wage of RM1,700. Instead, earnings are based on the skills acquired. In fact, some courses, such as welding, offer a starting salary of RM7,500," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Kangar UMNO Division Delegates Meeting here today, which was also attended by Perlis Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Rozabil Abd Rahman.
Zahid, who is also National TVET Council chairman, said there are currently 1,398 TVET institutions nationwide, with strong demand for skilled labour, particularly from foreign direct investment companies operating in Malaysia.
"We will continue to expand the number of places and courses offered to match the country's workforce needs. For example, many private TVET institutions already offer programmes in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and robotics.
"We are confident the involvement of TVET students in these emerging fields is in line with the demand for skilled workers from international companies," he said. – BERNAMA

High Court upholds RM780,000 awarded to sacked exec
The High Court in George Town, Penang, upheld an earlier decision by the Industrial Court. GEORGE TOWN : The High Court here has upheld an Industrial Court's decision awarding nearly RM800,000 in back wages and compensation to a senior employee of a semiconductor firm who was wrongfully dismissed in 2018. The High Court's decision will see Kon Siang Boon, a former global account manager at Molex (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, retaining the RM789,333.58 awarded to him by the Industrial Court last year. The High Court also ordered the company to pay RM7,500 in costs. Justice Anand Ponnudurai, in his ruling today, said there was no error of law in the Industrial Court's findings, and that the court had rightfully preferred Kon's version of events over the company's, based on the credibility of witnesses. Kon, who had been attached with the company for nearly 30 years, was accused of making fraudulent claims while on a business trip, which Molex claimed breached company policy, and was subsequently sacked in 2018 after a domestic inquiry. The Industrial Court, however, found the dismissal unjustified and procedurally flawed. At the time of his dismissal, he was earning over RM21,000 a month, with bonuses and allowances. According to the facts of the case, from 2016 to November 2017, Kon submitted meal and transport claims under the prevailing company travel policy, which were all approved by his superiors. Molex revised this policy on Nov 1, 2017, to bar meal claims. However, the Industrial Court found that this revised policy had not been clearly communicated to Kon. The court accepted Kon's testimony that he only became aware of the new rules in December 2017 and had stopped making such claims after that. In delivering his ruling, Anand said the Industrial Court's decision was reasonable and backed by detailed analysis.

Modern township set to transform Kinabatangan into East Coast growth hub
KOTA KINABALU (July 29): Kinabatangan is set to make history with the development of a modern township, Bandar Seri Milian, which is poised to become a catalyst for rural progress and economic upliftment in the region. This high-impact development is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Kinabatangan District Council and private developer SUNMOW Construction Sdn Bhd, encompassing a mixed development over 157.48 acres in Kota Kinabatangan town. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for August 15 at 2pm, at Dataran Terminal Terbuka, Kota Kinabatangan, and will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. Community Development Leader for Lamag, Johainizamshah Johari, said the Bandar Seri Milian project will be implemented in three phases over a 15-year period, with a Gross Development Value (GDV) of RM366 million. Johainizamshah emphasised that Bandar Seri Milian is not just a physical transformation but a symbol of the government's commitment to holistic development in rural areas. 'Under Hajiji's leadership, the state government is determined to ensure the people of Kinabatangan enjoy access to modern amenities, economic opportunities, and an improved quality of life,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. The project aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development blueprint, which promotes balanced development between urban and rural areas and aims to ensure inclusive prosperity. He also expressed confidence in the developer's track record in delivering large-scale, self-financed projects, adding that it would ensure smooth execution. 'This is an investment for the future. Bandar Seri Milian will emerge as a new growth hub, attracting investors, creating jobs, and stimulating the local entrepreneurship ecosystem. 'The development is expected to generate lasting socioeconomic benefits for Kinabatangan and elevate the district into a key growth centre on Sabah's East Coast,' he said.
