
Boeing machinists who build fighter jets reject contract, plan strike
July 27 (UPI) -- Several thousand Boeing union workers at three St. Louis-area plants who build fighter jets are planning to go on strike after rejecting a proposed contract Sunday that would pay an average of than $100,000 per year.
Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers at Boeing factories in St. Louis and St. Charles in Missouri and Mascoutah in Illinois voted against the new contract that included a 20% wage increase over four years.
The contract for District 837 members will expire at 11:59 p.m. CDT at which point there is a seven-day cooling-off period before a strike could start.
In all, there are 16,000 employees at the three locations, according to St. Louis Business Journal Research.
"IAM Union members delivered a clear message: the proposal from Boeing Defense fell short of addressing the priorities and sacrifices of the skilled IAM Union workforce," the union said in a news release. "Our members are standing together to demand a contract that respects their work and ensures a secure future."
Boeing and the union representing the machinists on Thursday reached an agreement on a four-year contract that would boost annual salaries to $102,600 with an 8% increase in the first year and 4% for the other three years.
"This contract puts money in members' pockets, protects healthcare access, and ensures our members have a voice in future health decisions all while respecting the skill and dedication IAM workers bring to Boeing's critical defense programs," IAM Union International President Brian Bryant said after the tentative contract.
The total increase would be 40% when including other benfits. There was a $5,000 ratification bonus.
Boeing said the current average hourly pay of $35 is $6 higher than three years ago.
"The IAM Union remains committed to achieving a fair contract that meets the needs of our members," the union said. "The IAM Union looks forward to returning to the bargaining table with Boeing's leadership to deliver meaningful improvements that support the well-being and livelihoods of IAM members and their families."
IAM, with approximately 600,000 active and retired workers, is one of North America's largest and most diverse industrial trade unions. They represent workers in aerospace/airlines, defense, shipbuilding, railroads/transit, healthcare and automotive in the United States and Canada.
"We're disappointed our employees voted down the richest contract offer we've ever presented to IAM 837 which addressed all their stated priorities," Dan Gillian, Boeing Air Dominance vice President, said in a statement, obtained by KSDK-TV. "We've activated our contingency plan and are focused on preparing for a strike. No talks are scheduled with the union."
Last year, Boeing machinists in the Pacific Northwest were in a 54-day strike that shut down airplane production. Ultimately, they agreed to an immediate pay boost of 13% and a total of 44% over four years when compounded.
Boeing has more than 170,000 employees worldwide.
The vote came two days before Boeing plans to announce its second-quarter earnings.

Azure's sales have to easily beat analyst estimates for Microsoft bulls to be satisfied. "We believe the combination of solid enterprise spending environment, continued improvements in go-to-market execution in the non-AI business, as well as healthy genAI demand that continues to outstrip supply, should enable Azure to post ~100-200 basis points of upside vs. management's 34-35% year over year constant currency guidance," Stifel analyst Brad Reback said. Capital expenditure spending in focus: Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) lifted its full-year capital expenditure plans by $10 billion last week. Some on the Street are warning Microsoft could hike its capex spending by 25% to 50% in its new fiscal year. It may be hard to justify that increase. "We expect Microsoft to remain aggressive on capex and expect cash capex growth in the 25% range next year. That said, we believe the aggregate rate of growth should normalize and be more in line with overall cloud growth," Evercore ISI analyst Kirk Materne said. Microsoft's valuation leaves no room for disappointment. The stock trades on double-digit price to sales, price to book, and enterprise value to revenue ratios on a trailing basis, according to Yahoo Finance data. Crossmark Global Investment's chief market strategist added on Opening Bid, "We look at the tech companies that we've seen report earnings already, they can beat on the top line. And the bottom line guidance can be solid. And it's just not enough for this market. President Donald Trump reached a trade deal with the European Union during his trip to Scotland over the July 27 weekend. Trump had previously threatened a 30% tariff on European goods in July, which he said would go into effect on Aug. 1. The deal announced following Trump's meeting with the European Commission president includes a 15% tariff on most goods from Europe and $600 billion in EU investments in the U.S. But Steel and aluminum will continue to face higher rates. The Europeans had pushed for a 10% tariff rate, which still would have been higher than before Trump took office this year. The deal comes as Trump's second extension on April's "Liberation Day" tariffs approaches another deadline. He has also made trade deals with several countries since he last delayed "reciprocal tariffs" in July. Despite the jump from the previous tariff rates, the markets responded positively. U.S. stock futures were higher the morning after the deal was announced. August 1 deadline imposed by Trump looms for many countries Trump deemed April 2 "Liberation Day" when he announced widespread tariffs on goods from most countries, spanning from a baseline of 10% up to at least 50% in some places. But shortly after, he paused most of the rates above 10% for 90 days. That first 90 days expired on July 9, but he extended the deadline again and began issuing letters announcing the new tariff rates on exports from other countries. On the second delay, he said the new deadline would be August 1, and vowed that date would not be changed. The deal announced with the EU, the group of 27 countries that together make up one of the world's biggest economies, is similar to other deals that have been announced in recent weeks with other major trade partners such as Japan.
