Back on Dech! Title-winning Wildcat returns to Perth

Perth Now22-04-2025

Olympian and two-time NBL champion Sunday Dech says he can't wait to head 'back home' to Perth, with the Wildcats securing the hard-nosed guard on a three-year deal.
Dech was a part of the 'Cats squad for titles in 2013-14 and 2018-19, with the South Sudanese-Australian enjoying success in the west after starting as a development player with his hometown team.
Having had stops at Illawarra and Adelaide, and rising to become one of the NBL's best defensive guards, Dech is now back in Wildcats red to help add depth to the club's backcourt amid the exit of Bryce Cotton.
'When you grow up and it's your childhood team and then you end up playing for them, it's always something you dream of, coming in and finishing your career at the team where it all started,' Dech said.
'By no means am I close to finishing my career, but it is something that I'm excited and grateful that it's happened earlier, rather than later in my career. Dech as a Wildcat in 2019. Credit: Kelly Defina / Getty Images
'I had a really good foundation at the Cats with a lot of good veterans and a lot of people that I looked up to.
'Over my time in Adelaide and Illawarra, I've been able to gain a wealth of knowledge there as well.

Dech represented South Sudan at last year's Olympics, and was in the starting line-up for 14 games at the 36ers last season to help lead the side into the NBL's play-in tournament.
Wildcats general manager Danny Mills described Dech as 'a respected leader throughout the league' who would give Perth's roster a big boost.
'He adds great size and depth on the wing, brings versatility on the defensive end, and his skill set offensively fits well with the core group of players we have returning.'
Dech will be reunited with Jesse Wagstaff in Perth after the veteran recommitted for a 17th NBL season, while import duo Kristian Doolittle and Dylan Windler have also been signed up as the Wildcats begin the post-Cotton era.

Matildas hero Katrina Gorry ties the knot with Clara Markstedt in stunning ceremony on Hamilton Island

Katrina Gorry has become the second Matildas player in a week to say 'I do', marrying longtime partner Clara Markstedt on Hamilton Island. The pair tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony on Saturday, just days after Matildas star Ellie Carpenter and fellow footballer Danielle van de Donk said their vows in France. West Ham United Women posted a photo of Gorry and Markstedt at the alter, which was covered in seasonal flowers with the backdrop of the stunning Whitsundays. 'Congratulations to the most gorgeous newlyweds, Mini & Clara. We're not sobbing, you are,' West Ham wrote. Gorry's daughter Harper was the flower girl for the ceremony. Harper was born to Gorry as a solo mum just before the couple met in 2022 while playing football in Sweden. Markstedt, who is Swedish, retired from a decorated football career in 2023, having played 275 games for four clubs across 14 years in Sweden's top-division league. Markstedt gave birth to their son, Koby, in 2024, 12 months after their enagement. Earlier, Carpenter was granted personal leave from the past Matildas window to prepare for her wedding. 'I choose you, I will always choose you,' Carpenter wrote alongside the two images. Carpenter and van Donk wore traditional white dresses with Carpenter having a lengthy vail. Carpenter and van de Donk met while playing for French side Olympique Lyonnais. The Aussie gun joined the club in 2020 with the Dutch midfielder joining the following the year. They began a couple in 2022 before announcing their engagement early last year. Olympique Lyonnais continued their domination of the French league, winning their fourth straight title and 18th from the past 19 years. Carpenter has been an influential player for the French side, playing 126 games since joining the club. She is also a mainstay of the Matildas side, already racking up 87 senior appearances and going to three Olympics.
