Nicola Sturgeon says rapist Isla Bryson is a ‘biological male'
However, she told ITV news that 'all sense of rationality' had been lost amid the furious debate over gender identity which had raged in Scotland.
Controversial reforms, which would have allowed transgender people to self identify as their preferred gender, had been passed by Holyrood late in 2022, only to be blocked by Westminster in January 2023.
Not long afterwards Bryson – who was born Adam Graham – was sent to a women's only jail after being convicted of raping two women, before being transferred to a male prison.
In her first television interview ahead of the publication of her memoir Frankly this week, Ms Sturgeon said that anyone who commits the 'most heinous male crime against women probably forfeits the right to be the gender of their choice'.
However, the former SNP leader went on to tell ITV News At Ten presenter Julie Etchingham that 'that probably was not the best phrase to use'.
That remark came after Ms Sturgeon stated: 'Isla Bryson identified as a woman.
'I think what I would say now is anybody who commits the most heinous male crime against women probably forfeits the right to be the gender of their choice.'
Asked why she did not simply say Bryson is a biological male, Ms Sturgeon said that 'they are a biological male' but added the issue 'gets back into the self-ID thing'.
The former first minister continued: 'I should have been much more straightforward, I wasn't, but that's because of the debate. We'd lost all sense of rationality in this debate. I'm partly responsible for that.'
However, Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay said: 'Frankly, Nicola Sturgeon must be delusional if she thinks the women of Scotland will swallow this drivel.'
The Conservative MSP said Ms Sturgeon had 'ignored all warnings that gender self-ID would be a gift to male predators like Isla Bryson' adding that she 'ordered her SNP MSPs to vote down my attempts to block rapists and other sex criminals from being able to legally change their gender by self-declaration'.
Mr Findlay said: 'Her absurd ideological belief in self-ID collapses with her belated mealy-mouthed admission that this rapist is a man, but she still can't bring herself to say sorry for all the pain and misery she has caused.'
Referring to then Conservative Scottish secretary Alister Jack's decision to step in and prevent the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from becoming law, Mr Findlay said that without this 'common-sense decision to block Sturgeon's dangerous law, every rapist in Scotland would be able to declare themselves as women with the full support of the state'.

Wiltshire PCC: ‘CCTV helps us make our streets safer for all'
CCTV is being hailed as a key tool in tackling crime and supporting community safety. Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Philip Wilkinson has reinforced the vital role of surveillance across the county, especially amid rising incidents in Swindon and other areas. Swindon's Central area has recorded more than 1,000 incidents this year, with increases also seen in Old Town, Mannington and Western, Walcot and Parks North. Mr Wilkinson said: "Everyone deserves to feel safe where they live, work and visit. "CCTV is one of the most effective tools we have to support that goal." Swindon Borough Council operates 1,100 cameras from its control centre, with operators monitoring public spaces in real time to help police respond quickly to incidents and gather crucial evidence to support investigations. The footage has helped identify suspects, protect vulnerable people and sometimes prevent crimes from escalating. New cameras are being installed in Trowbridge at anti-social behaviour hot spots such as the Town Park sports courts and Biss Meadows Country Park. Earlier this week, Mr Wilkinson visited the CCTV suite in Warminster, which uses 49 cameras to monitor the town, neighbouring Westbury, and the West Wilts Trading Estate. Mr Wilkinson said: "I was hugely impressed with the setup in Warminster and how closely they work with their local neighbourhood policing team to provide intelligence and evidence which has been used to secure significant convictions in the town." He emphasised that CCTV is just one part of a wider approach. Mr Wilkinson said: "CCTV doesn't work in isolation, it's part of a broader strategy that includes neighbourhood policing, community engagement and strong local partnerships. "Together, these efforts help create environments where people feel secure and supported. "Our investment in CCTV is an investment in making streets safer. "It's about giving our communities peace of mind and ensuring our officers have the resources they need to keep people safe." Philip Wilkinson OBE was re-elected as Wiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner in May 2024 for a second term. As PCC, he is responsible for overseeing the work of Wiltshire Police, ensuring the running of an efficient and effective police service, holding the chief constable to account on behalf of the county's residents, as well as commissioning key services that help make the county's communities safer and support victims.

Paedophile breached court order by using neighbour's phone and computer
A PAEDOPHILE has avoided prison despite breaching a court order by using a neighbour's phone and computer. Peter Young, of Weaverham, was not allowed to use the devices without the permission of the police. Chester Crown Court has heard how the 73-year-old, of Walnut Avenue, had a sexual harm prevention order imposed as a part of a suspended sentence for the possession of indecent images. Prosecuting, Thomas McLoughlin said the pensioner was in breach of the court order at least five times in a five-month period before being caught out at a check-in by Cheshire Police. Mr McLoughlin said: "In April 2025, the defendant confirmed he had not used a device of his own but he had used a neighbour's phone and PC. "The neighbour confirmed he had used them and, although there were times she was not in the room, she was able to hear what he was saying." Young admitted a breach of the sexual harm prevention order, which was also a breach of the suspended sentence of one year, suspended for two years. Mitigating, Jemma Gordon said he was not aware he had to go to the police about the use of other people's devices as well as the use of his own devices. Ms Gordon said: "He did not have any devices to be sure he did not fall foul of the order. "When police officers spoke to him he said he did not have any devices which was correct." On Friday, August 8, he received another suspended sentence of six months, suspended for one year, with a requirement to do 40 hours of unpaid work. Judge Steven Everett, the Honorary Recorder of Chester, said there was 'a realistic prospect of rehabilitation' although it was his second breach in a year. Judge Everett said: "The police need to know what you are up to so the public are safe. You need to understand that and I am not sure you understand that."
