
Certain people are mosquito magnets, and turns out THIS is the reason why
Ever wondered why the mosquitoes always seem to find you, even in a room full of people? When a female mosquito is on the hunt for some fresh blood, she has certain preferences, just like you ask the barista for a slim oat milk latte with a shot of vanilla.
Yes, mosquitoes are picky. Female mosquitoes pick the human species by tracking our CO2 exhalations, body heat, and body odor. But some people seem to be mosquito magnets than others. Many believe this is due to things like blood type, blood sugar, eating garlic or bananas, or being a woman or child. However, most of these ideas lack strong scientific proof, says Leslie Vosshall, a scientist at Rockefeller Laboratory of Neurogenetics and Behavior.
Vosshall and Maria Elena De Obaldia, a former postdoc in her lab, looked at the popular theory to explain varying mosquito appeal: individual odor variations connected to skin microbiota. They found that certain fatty acids emanating from the skin may create a heady perfume that mosquitoes can't resist. The findings are published in the
Cell
journal.
'There's a very, very strong association between having large quantities of these fatty acids on your skin and being a mosquito magnet,' Vosshall, the Robin Chemers Neustein Professor at The Rockefeller University and Chief Scientific Officer of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, said in a statement.

A tournament no one wants to win
To understand the mechanism of this selection, the researchers conducted a three-year study. The eight participants were asked to wear nylon stockings on their forearms for six hours daily, over several days. The worn nylons were then tested against one another in a round-robin style 'tournament' using a custom-built plexiglass olfactometer. In each round, mosquitoes were given a choice between two nylons, and researchers observed which one they preferred.
They placed Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes, the primary vector species for Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya, in the main chamber and observed as the insects flew down the tubes towards one nylon or the other. For Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the most compelling was Subject 33, who was four times more attractive to the mosquitoes than the next most-attractive study participant, and an astonishing 100 times more appealing than the least attractive, Subject 19.
The samples in the trials were anonymous, so researchers didn't know which participant wore which nylon. Yet, they noticed that something was unusual about Subject 33, because insects would swarm towards that sample. 'It would be obvious within a few seconds of starting the assay. It's the type of thing that gets me really excited as a scientist. This is something real. This is not splitting hairs. This is a huge effect,' De Obaldia said.
The researchers grouped participants into high and low mosquito attractors and looked for what set them apart. Chemical tests revealed 50 compounds that were more common in the skin oil (sebum) of those who attracted more mosquitoes. They also found that these people produced much higher levels of carboxylic acids, substances that skin bacteria use to create unique body odour in humans. To double-check their results, the team ran a second study with 56 new participants.
Once again, Subject 33 attracted the most mosquitoes, and continued to do so over time.
'Some subjects were in the study for several years, and we saw that if they were a
mosquito
magnet, they remained a mosquito magnet. Many things could have changed about the subject or their behaviors over that time, but this was a very stable property of the person,' De Obaldia added.
What's the science behind
Humans produce two classes of odors that mosquitoes detect with two different sets of odor receptors: Orco and IR receptors.
To test whether they could make mosquitoes that couldn't detect humans, researchers created genetically modified mosquitoes missing one or both key scent receptors. The orco mutants remained attracted to humans and were able to distinguish between mosquito magnets and low attractors, while IR mutants lost their attraction to humans to a varying degree, but still retained the ability to find humans.
'The goal was a mosquito that would lose all attraction to people, or a
mosquito
that had a weakened attraction to everybody and couldn't discriminate Subject 19 from Subject 33.
That would be tremendous. And yet that was not what we saw. It was frustrating,' Vosshall added.
These findings support another study by Vosshall, which showed how complex and reliable the mosquito's sense of smell is. Female

mosquitoes depend on blood to survive and reproduce, so their scent-detection system has multiple backups to make sure they can always find a human host. 'Without blood, she can't do either.
That's why she has a backup plan and a backup plan and a backup plan and is tuned to these differences in the skin chemistry of the people she goes after,' Vosshall says.
Mosquitoes have such a strong sense of smell that it's hard to imagine they'll ever stop targeting humans. However, one possible solution is to change the bacteria on our skin. For example, covering the skin of someone who attracts lots of mosquitoes (like Subject 33) with skin oils and bacteria from someone who doesn't (like Subject 19) might help hide them from mosquitoes.

'We haven't done that experiment. That's a hard experiment. But if that were to work, then you could imagine that by having a dietary or microbiome intervention where you put bacteria on the skin that are able to somehow change how they interact with the sebum, then you could convert someone like Subject 33 into a Subject 19. But that's all very speculative,' Vosshall added.

High blood pressure that's hard to control What it could be: Often blamed on stress or diet. But high blood pressure can both cause and result from kidney disease, creating a vicious cycle. The kidney connection: The kidneys help regulate blood pressure by managing fluid volume and releasing hormones. When damaged, their ability to balance these systems is disrupted, leading to resistant hypertension that doesn't respond well to medication. Frequent urination, especially at night What it could be: Most commonly associated with diabetes, urinary tract infections, or aging. But increased urination can be an early sign of kidney damage, especially in conditions like glomerulonephritis or polycystic kidney disease. The kidney connection: As the filtering units (nephrons) become damaged, they lose their ability to concentrate urine, resulting in larger volumes of diluted urine being produced, especially at night. This condition, called nocturia, disrupts sleep and may indicate early-stage kidney dysfunction, especially when accompanied by dark, cloudy, or unusually light-colored urine. Blood in urine or foamy urine What it could be: Blood in urine may be mistaken for a urinary tract infection or menstrual bleeding. Foamy urine can be dismissed as dehydration. But both can be red flags for kidney damage. The kidney connection: Healthy kidneys keep blood cells and proteins in the bloodstream. Hematuria (blood in urine) indicates that the kidney filters, called glomeruli, may be damaged and are leaking red blood cells. Proteinuria (protein in urine), which appears as persistent frothy or bubbly urine, signals a loss of protein through damaged kidneys. Swollen ankles, feet, or hands What it could be: Often mistaken for salt intake, long flights, or heart issues. But edema—fluid retention—is a key symptom of kidney dysfunction. The kidney connection: Healthy kidneys regulate sodium and fluid balance. When they're impaired, excess fluid accumulates in tissues, especially in the lower extremities. The result? Puffy legs, feet, and even eyelids. This swelling may appear mild at first but can worsen over time, especially in the feet and around the eyes upon waking. Itchy skin and muscle cramps What it could be: Dry skin or cramps can result from dehydration or mineral deficiencies. But they also indicate an electrolyte imbalance or toxin buildup, both signs of advanced kidney disease. The kidney connection: As kidneys fail, phosphorus levels rise and calcium drops, leading to itchy skin and muscle twitches. Uremic toxins can also irritate nerve endings and muscles, causing widespread discomfort. In severe cases, this leads to uremic frost, a rare condition where urea crystals form on the skin. Sudden weight fluctuations and/or loss of appetite What it could be: Changes in weight and appetite are often linked to digestive disorders, depression, or infections. The kidney connection: Uremic buildup can cause nausea, a metallic taste, and appetite loss, leading to unintentional weight loss. Fluid retention may cause a temporary weight gain or bloated feeling, which can also fluctuate daily depending on the kidneys' fluid-handling capacity. What to do: The necessary steps Kidney disease often flies under the radar, quietly advancing while mimicking more familiar conditions. If you notice two or more of the above symptoms, especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease, or are over age 60, it's highly recommended to get in touch with a professional healthcare provider and get a simple blood and urine test. Remember, your kidneys won't always press the loud alarm with on-your-face symptoms; however, they will keep dropping subtle hints for you to pay attention. The danger lies in how often those signs are overlooked and mistaken for more benign issues. So, stay vigilant; pay attention to even the slightest changes and signs and spot the red flags as early as possible. That way, you can catch problems early and protect your long-term kidney health. New Delhi: Analysing samples of human tissues across five decades, researchers have found that age 50 might be an inflexion point, after which ageing accelerates -- blood vessels age early and are markedly vulnerable, they said. The findings, published in the journal Cell, add to evidence emerging from analysing proteins from humans to understand ageing processes, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences said. A study published last year in August in the journal Nature Ageing showed that ages 44 and 60 might be when a human body experiences changes in molecules and microbes, significantly impacting heart and immune function. The 'Cell' study looked at over 500 samples from 13 human tissues taken from organs across the body's systems, including the cardiovascular, immune and digestive. Proteomics, or a large-scale study of proteins, was applied to examine the samples that had aged over a period of 50 years. Results "revealed an ageing inflexion around age 50, with blood vessels being a tissue that ages early and is markedly susceptible to ageing." Further, based on changes in the proteins due to ageing, the authors have developed protein-based age clocks and charted the ageing trajectories of varied organs. The findings also highlighted an early and pronounced ageing of the aorta -- a major artery that carries blood from the heart to branch arteries -- which the authors said was critical to the ageing of blood vessels and in initiating ageing across the body by interacting with other organs and blood. "We introduce protein-based ageing clocks and dynamic ageing trajectories for human organs, illuminating their biological age and disease risks," the team wrote. They added, "Our study highlights the early and pronounced ageing of the aorta, underscoring the critical role of vascular senescence in initiating systemic ageing through its extensive interactions with other organs and blood components." 14 swimmers brave choppy, cold waters of English channel; 4 finish 132km relay in 33hours
Bengaluru: Certain tasks seem unattainable, yet many people throughout history have proved that inner voice wrong. Crossing the English Channel is one of those tasks. A gruelling 33km swim from the coast of England to France was completed by a group of 14, including 12 from the city, with a group of three from Bengaluru completing the rare four-member two-way English Channel relay. The group comprising Manish Jaswal, Dr Santosh Loganathan, Tejas Sati and Avinash Thandani (Mumbai) is all above the age of 40. The quartet swam the gruelling 132km in 33 hours and 3 minutes. One member of the team would swim for some time and then tag a teammate, waiting on the safety boat, which tailed them. The first leg of the swim from England to the French coast was relatively comfortable for the group, without any trouble from the water. The return leg, however, proved to be trickier with strong currents holding the team in place. The night swim was cold and choppy. They dealt with fatigue, back spasms, and nausea. Jaswal, a corporate employee who has been swimming since childhood, held down the fort through strong currents, putting the team back on course and within touching distance of the English coast. "There are no words to describe the moment," said Dr Loganathan of the feeling of returning to the English coast. All four team members jumped into the water and swam the last 200m together and received a huge round of applause by onlookers as they climbed onto the beach. "This challenge is open for everyone; we want everyone to have this sense of accomplishment. Everyone knows swimming the channel is equivalent to climbing Mt. Everest," said M Satish Kumar, managing director and coach, SwimLife that oversaw the training of the swimmers, fostering a team spirit. "More than 70% of attempts fail," he added. Rana Ghosh, a 50-year-old marketing professional who swam along the channel, exemplified team spirit in his swim as he pushed through an injury. "I had a deep cut on my wrist.
