Minister Na'im files defamation suit against lecturer
Religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar claimed that on Feb 5 and May 4, lecturer Abu Hafiz Salleh Hudin had published and reposted defamatory, malicious and untrue statements on the latter's X account.
PETALING JAYA : Religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar has filed a defamation suit against a public university lecturer over alleged defamatory statements posted on social media.
Harian Metro reported that Na'im named Abu Hafiz Salleh Hudin as the defendant in the lawsuit filed at the Shah Alam High Court via Messrs Akberdin & Co on June 14.
The lawsuit relates to defamatory statements allegedly posted by Abu Hafiz on X and Facebook.
In the statement of claim, Na'im said the defendant had shown a consistent pattern in his various public statements since the end of 2024, whether via posts on X or Facebook, or statements published by news portals.
He said the statements had directly or indirectly touched on and attacked him in an unfair and excessive manner.
Na'im claimed that on Feb 5 and May 4, Abu Hafiz had published and reposted defamatory, malicious and untrue statements on the latter's X account.
He said the statements implied he was an arrogant, hard-headed and conceited leader who rejected advice and was unwilling to accept other views in matters related to religion.
Na'im also said the statements implied he had failed to effectively carry out his duties, even in simple matters, causing the government's policies and initiatives to become a laughing stock and rejected by a number of MPs.
Na'im said the statements also implied that he was an elitist and considered himself superior to other officials, and that he acted contrary to the principles of Islamic leadership.
'It is beyond doubt that the defendant harboured malicious intent towards me. It is also clear that the defendant intended to cause disharmony in society by defaming me,' he said.
Na'im is seeking general, aggravated, and exemplary damages from the defendant, as well as an injunction to have the posts removed and to prevent them from being republished.

Fahmi: Malaysia's Online Safety Act to strengthen digital protections, enforcement expected soon
PUTRAJAYA, June 18 — The Online Safety Act 2024 is expected to be enforced soon after several key processes related to the legislation are finalised, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is also Madani Government spokesperson, said he is currently awaiting the draft of the Act from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which includes the regulations to be adopted. 'Once the draft is ready and I sign the gazette to enforce the Act, then it will come into effect,' he said at his weekly press conference today. Fahmi said that a committee will also be set up by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to oversee the implementation of the Act. 'This committee will have regulatory powers over the enforcement of the Act, such as defining what constitutes online harms,' he explained. Prior to this, Azalina said that the new law would come into force once the Communications Minister signs the enforcement order, enabling the government to act swiftly to remove illegal content. Under the Act, platform providers are also required to comply with specified duties of care. Azalina noted that while the Online Safety Act focuses on platform regulation and digital responsibilities, any issues involving children must be addressed within the framework of the Child Act 2001. In a related development, Fahmi said sign language interpreters will have increased involvement in key programmes to facilitate communication with persons with disabilities (PwD). 'Insya-Allah, I will strive to ensure that sign language interpreters are not only present during Communications Ministry press conferences but also in upcoming parliament sessions and other areas. We want to highlight the role of sign language interpreters,' he added. — Bernama

Sabah polls coming, but timing of assembly dissolution is my call, says CM
PUTATAN, June 18 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has confirmed that the state election will be held soon, though the exact timing of the state assembly's dissolution remains at his sole discretion. When asked about speculation that the Sabah State Legislative Assembly may be dissolved as early as next month, Hajiji declined to confirm the rumours. 'That's for me to think about. Others don't need to think too much,' he told reporters on Monday. 'As a chief minister, I will decide soon. But what is clear is that we will hold an election soon. Whether it is early or late, it must be held. So wait, we will leave it to the people to decide who they want as the government,' he said after meeting victims of the fire at Kampung Petagas. Hajiji however did confirm that preliminary discussions have been held with current partners Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) regarding cooperation in the upcoming election. He said further talks are expected before the formal dissolution of the state assembly. 'There has been an initial discussion with PH, and we will complete it soon — before the dissolution,' he said. Hajiji has previously indicated his preference for continuing the working relationship between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah PH, which has governed the state in partnership since 2022 after a falling out with Sabah Barisan Nasional. However, the national PH leadership has also announced an electoral pact with BN, adding uncertainty to the alliance dynamics in Sabah and raising questions about seat negotiations and potential electoral clashes with GRS in Sabah. Sabah is expected to head to the polls for its 17th state election (PRN17) in the coming months or face automatic dissolution by November. The eight component GRS currently governs in partnership with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH), which comprises three components.
