Sabah polls coming, but timing of assembly dissolution is my call, says CM
PUTATAN, June 18 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has confirmed that the state election will be held soon, though the exact timing of the state assembly's dissolution remains at his sole discretion.
When asked about speculation that the Sabah State Legislative Assembly may be dissolved as early as next month, Hajiji declined to confirm the rumours.
'That's for me to think about. Others don't need to think too much,' he told reporters on Monday.
'As a chief minister, I will decide soon. But what is clear is that we will hold an election soon. Whether it is early or late, it must be held. So wait, we will leave it to the people to decide who they want as the government,' he said after meeting victims of the fire at Kampung Petagas.
Hajiji however did confirm that preliminary discussions have been held with current partners Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) regarding cooperation in the upcoming election.
He said further talks are expected before the formal dissolution of the state assembly.
'There has been an initial discussion with PH, and we will complete it soon — before the dissolution,' he said.
Hajiji has previously indicated his preference for continuing the working relationship between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah PH, which has governed the state in partnership since 2022 after a falling out with Sabah Barisan Nasional.
However, the national PH leadership has also announced an electoral pact with BN, adding uncertainty to the alliance dynamics in Sabah and raising questions about seat negotiations and potential electoral clashes with GRS in Sabah.
Sabah is expected to head to the polls for its 17th state election (PRN17) in the coming months or face automatic dissolution by November.
The eight component GRS currently governs in partnership with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH), which comprises three components.

Yusoff Rawther wants Anwar's reference appeal heard on July 21
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is appealing the High Court's refusal to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court for determination arising from a civil suit brought by former research assistant Yusoff Rawther. PUTRAJAYA : Lawyers for former research assistant Yusoff Rawther have requested that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's appeal, seeking to refer several legal and constitutional questions to the Federal Court, be expedited and fixed for hearing on July 21. In a letter to Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, the Law Practice of Rafique said the appeal records were complete, as the High Court had issued its written grounds for dismissing Anwar's application. 'A case management can be held earlier so that the appeal can be heard and disposed of on July 21,' the letter sighted by FMT read. The lawyers said the appeal was limited to questions of law as there are no facts in dispute. On June 10, a three-member Court of Appeal bench allowed Anwar an ad interim stay of a civil suit brought by Yusoff against him, and fixed July 21 for the full hearing of the stay application. The appeals court also fixed the appeal proper for case management on Sept 2. Rafique Rashid Ali, who is representing Yusoff, confirmed the matter. As a result of the ad interim stay, the trial of the suit, scheduled to begin on June 16 before Justice Roz Mawar Rozian, was vacated. Roz Mawar had on June 4 dismissed Anwar's reference application, ruling that none of the eight questions posed had succeeded in crossing the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964. In her 21-page judgment, she held that the application was misconceived on jurisdictional grounds and rested on speculative doctrines which lacked a constitutional basis. Anwar wants the apex court to rule on whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from the suit filed by Yusoff four years ago. The suit relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 24, 2022. Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.

Zaidi also confirmed that officials have endorsed the policy document outlining the second phase (2026-2030) of the Asean Plan of Action for Energy, which continues the region's focus on energy security, market integration and the clean energy transition. In a recent interview with FMT, energy transition and water transformation minister Fadillah Yusof said Asean is also exploring a code of conduct for external energy partners amid growing engagement with dialogue partners, including the US and Russia. The three-day meeting, hosted by the ministry from June 16 to 18, saw the participation of 250 delegates across Asean countries, the Asean Secretariat, the Asean Centre for Energy, and dialogue partners from China, Japan, Russia and the US. Other outcomes The ministry said other key outcomes of the three-day meeting included the launching of the Asean-Russia Capacity Building on Energy Statistics project and renewing the Asean-Russia energy cooperation framework for 2026-2028. Russia's Elena Vikulova, deputy head of its directorate of international cooperation, said there is strong potential for Asean-Russia energy cooperation given the region's surging energy demand. In a statement, the ministry said senior officials from Australia, the US, Russia, South Korea, China and Japan discussed advancing energy efficiency measures, sustainable biofuels and renewable energy deployment during the 30th East Asia Summit Energy Cooperation Task Force Meeting. It also said the International Energy Agency presented its Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2025, while the International Renewable Energy Agency shared renewable energy trends around the world. Additionally, the Asian Development Bank presented its 2025-2026 work plan, which focuses on clean energy transitions and sustainable infrastructure development, while also making 'significant progress' in discussions on the APG with energy senior officials. Earlier today, South Korea's trade, industry and energy first secretary Heegang Kim said in his opening remarks that the nation is set to launch a nuclear cooperation project with Asean to systematically support the region's readiness to introduce nuclear power plants. Another new initiative Kim announced was the transfer of the Korean electrical safety management system to Asean member states from the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation.

He said Johor's strategic location and political stability had helped it remain among Malaysia's top three destinations for foreign direct investment in recent years. 'Despite the fact that many politicians all over the world are trying to make the world smaller, the majority believe globalisation is key to uplifting the quality of life. 'Because of our location and the strong relationship between Malaysia and Singapore – and Malaysia's good relationship with all nations – we are in a good position to capitalise on this,' he said at the Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025 co-organised by IIB here today. Idzham said in today's uncertain political climate, the formalisation of JS-SEZ had been crucial to ensuring its long-term competitiveness. The zone was formally established in January through an agreement between Malaysia and Singapore to boost economic connectivity between the state and the republic. It aims to attract 100 projects worth RM100 billion and create about 100,000 jobs in high-value sectors such as manufacturing, digital economy, logistics, clean energy, and tourism over the next decade. Spanning nine flagship zones, including Iskandar Malaysia and Pengerang, JS-SEZ offers competitive tax incentives and streamlined regulations to attract global investors. The initiative has begun to draw strong interest from investors in Japan, South Korea, China and Europe, positioning Johor as a strategic gateway to the Asean market. Idzham said the region's relatively low operating cost made it especially appealing. 'The cost of doing business in Johor is almost 60% cheaper than in Singapore and almost 30% cheaper than in Kuala Lumpur. 'We have the ability to help (Singaporean businesses) scale up, reduce their cost of doing business, and give them the space they need to grow,' he said. At a time when cross-border dynamics are easily politicised, Idzham reframed Johor-Singapore ties as collaborative rather than competitive. He said the two neighbours, separated only by the Johor Strait, each brought unique strengths to the table and complemented one another economically.
