Disappointed Ciraldo threatens to swing axe at Dogs
The Bulldogs' consistency from earlier in the season is eluding them at just the wrong time, with Friday's 32-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters their second in three games.
Canterbury were first on the ladder for 13 consecutive weeks earlier in the year but are now in an uphill battle to secure a top-two finish with three games to go before finals.
On Friday, Easts completely dominated the Bulldogs after half-time.
Naufahu Whyte, notably, smashed past four Bulldogs defenders for one of the softer tries the league's best defensive side have conceded this year.
"When the intensity went up, a few guys didn't want to go with it," said frustrated coach Ciraldo.
In part, he blamed his own training practices for a drop in consistency.
"We've had consistency for three quarters of the year. The last month has been disappointing," he said.
"I sort of blame myself there because we've got some guys carrying niggles and they just get through training instead of actually training.
"I'm going to stop that. If you can't train, it sort of results in a performance like that."
Recruits Marcelo Montoya and Sitili Tupouniua are expected to recover from respective neck and hamstring injuries in the coming weeks.
Back-up hooker Jake Turpin, utility Drew Hutchison and forwards Daniel Suluka-Fifita and Kurtis Morrin are among other proven first-graders currently out of the team.

A rare bright moment for the Bulldogs at Allianz Stadium.
Ciraldo warned there were plenty of candidates for game time if the rigours of the long season were weighing on incumbent players.
"We've got a couple of guys available from injury possibly next week or the week after," Ciraldo said.
"We've got a deep squad. We've got a lot of good players that didn't play tonight. If we don't want to prepare to win, then I'll put someone in who does want to prepare to win."
The Bulldogs have one of the hardest fixture lists to finish the regular season as the only team playing three opponents that began round-24 in the top eight.
Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton, a three-time premiership winner, said the timing was right for Ciraldo to call the Bulldogs out.
"We're coming into the serious part of the year," he said.
"If you don't get your mindset right coming into these big games, you're going to be sitting behind the posts most of the time (after conceding tries).
"You'd rather have this conversation now than leading into finals."

Gold Coast hope former Wallabies No.10 Carter Gordon can be a long-term playmaker in the NRL and his first rugby league game in 357 days for Ipswich Jets was a step in the right direction. After an inspirational return following surgery on a spinal fluid leak, Gordon played 40 minutes at five-eighth for Titans affiliate club the Jets on Saturday in a 32-12 win over Western Clydesdales in Miles in the Queensland Cup. "Carter was very silky with his attack and had a try assist. It was a really successful comeback for him," Jets chairman Steve Johnson told AAP. Titans veteran playmaker Kieran Foran, who won the 2011 NRL title with Manly, will hang up the boots at the end of this year. Johnson said Gordon would make a more than suitable replacement for Foran for the 2025 cellar dwellers who are on track for the wooden spoon. "When they lose Foz (Foran) next year he is perfect to drop into that Titans side , particularly if they are not also playing a genuine halfback," Johnson said "Carter can lay on those sweep balls that Foz would lay on. "He has a big boot and was getting a lot of distance with it for us. You can see he is a class player. His passing game is really clever and he is a big body at six. "The Titans would be very pleased with his 40 minutes on return." Gordon, who played eight Tests for the Wallabies, spoke to AAP before his comeback about how much of a thrill it was to be making it back on the park. "It is very exciting to get on the field and put into action what I've learnt," he said. Johnson said the Jets were only too happy to facilitate the 24-year-old's comeback "It is good for us as a club, as part of the Titans system, to be helping their players come back," Johnson said. "We are always happy to help get blokes back on their feet." Gordon is expected to increase his minutes towards the 80-mark in the coming weeks as the Jets remain on track to play finals. When he signed with the Titans, former Gold Coast No.6 and Wallabies gun Mat Rogers told AAP he had high hopes for Gordon. "I called a couple of Carter's rugby games for Stan (Sport) from the sideline and I was really impressed with his running game and his ability to take the ball to the line and find the right person in support," Rogers said. "They are attributes that transfer to rugby league. I think he could be a tremendous asset to the Titans." The Titans are last on the NRL ladder and Gordon could be a chance to get a top grade debut in the closing rounds. Titans centre Harley Smith-Shields, formerly with Canberra, also returned from a long-term lay-off with Ipswich against Clydesdales. He is yet to play an NRL game this year. "Harley came back well," Johnson said. "He returned from a back issue and played against the Capras in round nine but then tore a hamstring badly. He missed a lot of weeks but now he is looking good."

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Courtney Williams scored a season-high 26 points, Kayla McBride hit a deep 3-pointer with 30.8 seconds left and the Minnesota Lynx beat the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty 86-80 on Saturday. New York beat the Lynx 3-2 in the best-of-five 2024 WNBA Finals to win the franchise's first championship. Since then, Minnesota has won three straight against the Liberty. Minnesota (28-5) has won six in a row and 10 of 11 overall. DiJonnai Carrington won a jump ball against Natasha Cloud with 25.2 seconds left and the Liberty were forced to foul. McBride — who went into the game shooting 93.8% (75 of 80) from the line this season — hit two of four free throws before Jessica Shepard made two free throws to cap the scoring with 3.6 seconds left. McBride finished with 17 points and Jessica Shepard added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lynx. Alanna Smith finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Jonquel Jones led New York (21-13) with 17 points and Sabrina Ionescu had 13 points and 10 assists. Marine Johannès added 12 points and Kennedy Burke 11. The Lynx led 38-27 with two minutes left in the first half, but New York answered with a 16-0 run to close the second quarter and open the third. Then again, they also haven't been entirely at full strength since the beginning of the season. They're without Breanna Stewart (bone bruise), Nyara Sabally (nagging knee issue) and Isabelle Harrison (concussion protocol). While the Liberty can't control who's on the floor on any given night, they can control how well they lock in to the attention of details and if they go away from playing their style. It arguably was the best the team has looked since it lost Stewart to injury on July 26. New York matched Minnesota's physicality and played the way the defending champions should. Even with the Liberty fouling to stop the clock late, it's hard not to acknowledge the free-throw discrepancy. New York trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half but trimmed the Lynx's lead to five by halftime. The Liberty jumped out to a 6-0 start in the third quarter to capture their first lead of the game. Advertisement The Liberty led 61-60 heading into the fourth quarter. But in the end, the Lynx won. The Liberty head back to Brooklyn, where they'll host the Lynx on Tuesday.
