Tommy Fleetwood has spoken out about his wife and manager who is 23 years older than him
Tommy Fleetwood once confessed his life with manager-wife Clare is not what most people would describe as 'normal'. The 34-year-old, who begins his Open Championship campaign at Portrush on Thursday, married Clare, 23 years his senior, in 2017.
She had been his manager before their relationship took a romantic turn. Due to the significant age difference, Clare initially resisted his advances before they eventually got together. They have one child together, Frankie, while Clare has two children from a previous marriage.
Tommy credits Clare for positively impacting his life both on and off the course. Speaking ahead of the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, he spoke warmly of the couple's preparations for the tournament and her passion for Manchester City. Everton supporter Fleetwood told The Telegraph:"We had a lovely time searching for a dress for the gala dinner.
"She's a big Man City fan and she's going to bring a little bit of north-west football fannage to the Ryder Cup." He then added: "No, I don't think we've ever been called the norm."
The couple have successfully juggled their personal and professional lives after Clare considered stepping back from her managerial role. But after testing the waters, they decided to continue their player-manager arrangement.
Tommy said: "It works very well. I do as I'm told when needed to. When we started, we obviously never knew how it was going to go, and I think we were always open to the idea if it didn't work, then we'd try something else. But luckily for us, we get on so well.
"I guess it's our relationship in a way, but we've not had any trouble yet. But then, my entire backroom is formed with people I class as friends first and colleagues second. It's just the way I am."
They set a six-month trial period after considering other management possibilities for Tommy. Reflecting on their decision during the couple's appearance on the Performance People podcast in 2023, Clare said: "As we were sat there listening to different proposals, I'm like, 'I can do this.'
"But I just for some reason at the beginning thought I couldn't and I shouldn't. Then we gave it six months, and it worked, so we carried on."
Clare also delved into how they strike a balance between business and pleasure, adding: "I talk about work a lot, I can't help it, but I do make a conscious effort [to switch off]. I can see sometimes in his face that he's had enough, which is quite often!
"We put an office in the house and if I need to talk to him about work, he'll come in. The only thing we needed to get right was me not talking about work all of the time.
"Tommy's happier going off reading a book, listening to podcasts, he meditates. I'll go off to work if I've got a spare hour. That's my weakness in a way. It was never the plan to work together."
Tommy will be in a star-studded group containing home hero Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas for the first two rounds at Portrush. The trio are late-starters in round one, teeing off at 3.10pm.

Man Utd transfer news: Ruben Amorim makes Rasmus Hojlund admission as replacement targeted
Manchester United have signed three new players so far and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected at Old Trafford before the transfer window slams shut Manchester United have strengthened their squad with two major signings so far this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as they look to bounce back from their worst ever Premier League finish. United finished 15th last season and were particularly toothless in front of goal, with only Everton and the three sides that got relegated managing less league goals than their 44 strikes. Cunha and Mbeumo, meanwhile, netted 35 goals between them. They have also signed teenage full-back Diego Leon, while Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan and Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been released. And plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected before the transfer window slams shut. Amorim's Hojlund admission Ruben Amorim has admitted he cannot guarantee Rasmus Hojlund will stay at Old Trafford, with Manchester United looking to sign a new striker. Hojlund managed just four Premier League goals last season and has been linked with a move away, with Amorim keen to add more firepower. And when asked about Hojlund's future, Amorim said: "I'm really happy with Rasmus, but I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market. "The important thing is that the strikers who are here are working really well, they are improving, they are helping the team and that's the most important thing. The important thing is that Rasmus is scoring goals. He's connecting really well with the team. He's improving. Again, I don't know what is going to happen until the market is closed." Hojlund makes transfer vow Rasmus Hojlund has insisted he is not concerned by Manchester United's pursuit of a new striker, claiming that any extra competition will "sharpen him". "I think the most important thing for me is just to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we'll see what happens," Hojlund said. "I think my plan is very clear and that's for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. "Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team." Sesko asking price RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko has emerged as Manchester United's top attacking target, with reports from Germany suggesting he could cost upwards of £70m. It is claimed that Sesko has a gentlemen's agreement with Leipzig that would let him leave for a fee between £60m and £70m plus add-ons, but that only applies to select clubs. Newcastle are also said to be interested in Sesko, with Alexander Isak keen to leave St James' Park.

Premier League side eye six more signings ahead of new season
Everton are reportedly interested in signing Southampton's Tyler Dibling, with a £27m bid for the winger already rejected. David Moyes is seeking to make six more signings to strengthen Everton's squad, particularly after the departure of wingers Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom. Dibling, an England Under-21 international, had a breakthrough season for Southampton, scoring four goals in 38 appearances. Despite Southampton previously valuing Dibling at £100m, their relegation to the Championship could lead to further player sales. Everton have so far completed three signings this summer: goalkeeper Mark Travers, forward Thierno Barry, and midfielder Charly Alcaraz.

Everton eye Tyler Dibling as David Moyes targets six more signings
Everton are interested in Southampton 's Tyler Dibling as David Moyes steps up his search for a right winger. The Merseyside club have reportedly had a £27m bid for the teenager rejected by the relegated club. Moyes wants six more signings as he looks to bolster Everton's slender squad by the end of the transfer window. Everton lost two wingers at the end of last season, when Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom's loan spells at Goodison Park ended. And they have turned to the England Under-21 international, who scored four goals in 38 games in a breakthrough campaign for Southampton. Saints had put a £100m price on Dibling a few months ago, which the 19-year-old said was a source of amusement to his teammates. But they could sell more players following their demotion to the Championship, with Kamaldeen Sulemana, Paul Onuachu and Jan Bednarek already leaving. Adam Lallana has retired, Kyle Walker-Peters has departed on a free transfer and Aaron Ramsdale could join Newcastle on loan. Everton have only made three signings so far this summer, buying goalkeeper Mark Travers from Bournemouth, forward Thierno Barry from Villarreal and the former Southampton midfielder Charly Alcaraz, who was on loan at the club last season, from Flamengo.
