You Should Download iOS 18.6 Now to Fix This Zero-Day Flaw

CNET3 days ago
Apple released iOS 18.6 on July 29, ahead of the company's release of iOS 26 this fall. While the next major iOS update will bring Liquid Glass and more to your iPhone, iOS 18.6 doesn't change much on your device. Instead of new features, the update is filled with about two dozen bug and security fixes, including a patch for a flaw that could be actively exploited.
You can download iOS 18.6 by going to Settings, then tapping General. Next, select Software Update, then tap Update Now and follow the prompts on your screen.
Here's what iOS 18.6 brings to your iPhone.
This update patches a zero-day flaw and other issues
According to Apple's security notes, iOS 18.6 fixes about two dozen security issues and bugs. But one issue in WebKit, Apple's in-house-developed internet browser engine used in Safari, could compromise your system and is being tracked as CVE-2025-6558.
"This is a vulnerability in open source code and Apple Software is among the affected projects," Apple wrote in the security notes for this issue. The CVE Program, which helps identify, define and catalog cybersecurity risks, lists the severity of this issue as high.
This bug was identified by a member of Google's Threat Analysis Group, and Google wrote on July 15 that it is aware that an exploit for this bug exists in the wild. So you should download iOS 18.6 immediately to protect your device.
Are there any new features in iOS 18.6?
After downloading and testing iOS 18.6 during the beta cycle, I found no new features or noticeable changes in the update. That's not surprising considering Apple's iOS release schedule over the years.
Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 and released iOS 17.6 more than a month later in July. That update was filled with more than 30 important bug fixes and security patches, but no new features. Apple recommended that everyone download the update at the time, and it was the last major iOS 17 update before the release of iOS 18.
Apple did the same thing in July 2023 when it released iOS 16.6. When the tech giant released that update, it was focused on bug fixes and security patches. After that, the next major iOS release was iOS 17.
Apple is likely shifting gears and focusing more on iOS 26. In fact, the company has already released multiple betas of that iOS software in preparation for its fall release.
While there aren't any new features in iOS 18.6, you should still download the update to your iPhone to take care of the security issues and bugs, especially that zero-day flaw.
iOS 18.6 release notes
The release notes for iOS 18.6 are quite brief, reading, "This update provides important bug fixes and security updates, and fixes an issue in Photos that could prevent memory movies from being shared." If you want more information on the security content of iOS 18.6, you can check out Apple's page breaking down the security content of this and other updates.

Wall Street thinks the party for Palantir can continue even after a wild rally in 2025 — but there's one key risk

Palantir is the top-performing stock in the S&P 500 this year, and Wall Street is upbeat about what's ahead. Palantir has been on a tear, climbing 113% since the start of the year. A lofty valuation is the main risk analysts are eyeing heading into second-quarter earnings. Wall Street thinks the Palantir party can keep going. The stock is already up by about 113% this year as it heads into its second-quarter earnings report after the bell on Monday, but analysts see reasons to believe the gains can pile up further. The Alex Karp-led software giant is benefiting from a slew of government contracts, roaring AI demand, and a cultlike following among retail investors in 2025. Shares of the company have soared from around $75 a share at the start of 2025 to above $160 on Monday. That ascent has made Palantir the best-performing stock in the S&P 500 this year. Analysts are bullish about Palantir's second-quarter earnings. They estimate the tech giant will report $939.3 million in revenue for the three-month period, up around 38% year over year. Here are some of the reasons they see the growth story continuing — and one key risk. 1. The AI trade is still running hot Palantir will likely keep up growth in its commercial segment, thanks to the ongoing hype surrounding AI. Accelerating AI adoption is creating a greater need to integrate data, which is good news for the stock, analysts at Mizuho wrote in a note. The bank said it conducted checks on Palantir's enterprise inbound activity, which gave it confidence that the company would be able to beat its commercial growth guidance in 2025. Palantir expects the US commercial side of its business to grow 68% for the year. "PLTR's recent execution and momentum is stunning, including material upward revisions across its commercial and government segments that we very much underestimated," Mizuho analysts wrote. Analysts at UBS said they also conducted checks on Palantir's enterprise businesses, and lifted their estimates for the company's revenue growth from 31% to 38% for the year. "We see potential tailwinds from the increasing adoption of AI across enterprise," Citi analysts wrote, adding that its checks and its conversation with Palantir's chief finance officer were also positive. Government contracts A large part of Palantir's growth story has been fueled by its contracts with the federal government. In April, the software company secured a $30 million deal with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement for software to monitor visas and track deportations. In May, the firm teamed up with Fannie Mae, and said it would provide AI tools to support the government-sponsored mortgage financier's Crime Detection Unit. It also secured a $795 million contract with the Department of Defense's AI arm, and last week, locked a deal to help streamline the US Army for up to $10 billion for the next decade. The deal consolidates 75 existing contracts into a single agreement. "We believe this deal represents an additional tailwind for PLTR with AI initiatives across the US government accelerating with AI a strategic focus on the federal front and Palantir in the sweet spot to benefit from a tidal wave of federal spending on AI," analysts at Wedbush Securities wrote last week, calling Palantir one of the top tech stocks to own in 2025. "We remain positive on the public sector pipeline, which appears durable given ongoing geopolitical instability. Net, we believe PLTR will likely be able to continue growing its Government revenue >40% Y/Y over at least the near-term," Mizuho said. "We continue to view Palantir as well positioned to continue to deliver best-in-class growth given the secular trend towards enterprise AI adoption; the continued push for efficiency and technology adoption in the US government; and adoption of Operation Warp Speed among new defense entrants, traditional defense companies, and the broader manufacturing industry," analyst at Goldman Sachs wrote in a note following Palantir's first-quarter earnings report in May. High bar But there's one risk Wall Street is eyeing: the valuation is at eye-watering levels. As of Monday afternoon, the trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio was above 690x. Despite a bullish short-term outlook, Goldman Sachs, UBS, and Mizuho are among those on Wall Street who rated Palantir as "neutral" headed into its second-quarter earnings. Analysts at Citi, meanwhile, rated the stock as "Neutral/High Risk." "We maintain our Neutral/High Risk rating on the stock on valuation concerns and our view that second derivative/revision trends could moderate limiting upside," Citi added in a note. "That said, we are equally stunned by the multiple that PLTR has attained, which places its valuation dramatically above anything else in software," Mizuho analysts said, adding they would "continue to worry" that the stock could see a reversion sometime in the next several quarters. "We continue to be very impressed by the fundamental story (we have been since our launch) but valuation remains our key hurdle, we remain Neutral rated," UBS said. Old Mars rovers can learn new tricks! NASA's Curiosity marks 13-year milestone with new science capabilities

Can you teach an old Mars rover new tricks? NASA says the answer is a resounding 'yes.' Following its landing on Mars 13 years ago, Curiosity has been given new capabilities, allowing it to do science on the Red Planet while expending less energy from its batteries. Essentially, it can now multitask. 'We were more like cautious parents earlier in the mission,' Reidar Larsen, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a statement. 'It's as if our teenage rover is maturing, and we're trusting it to take on more responsibility. As a kid, you might do one thing at a time, but as you become an adult, you learn to multitask.' Larsen led a group of engineers who developed the new capabilities for their six-wheeled teen. The agency said improvements to Curiosity will allow the rover to make the most of its energy source, which is a type of nuclear battery known as a radioisotope thermoelectric generator also used by the Perseverance rover. Managing the rover's daily power budget as the plutonium in the battery decays, Curiosity can now safely talk to a local orbiter while driving, moving its robotic arm, or snapping images. Curiosity can now decide to take a nap if it gets its work done early, ensuring there is less recharging necessary before the next day. 'Even actions that trim just 10 or 20 minutes from a single activity add up over the long haul, maximizing the life of the MMRTG for more science and exploration down the road,' the lab said in a release. These developments build on years of work developing other capabilities, including enhanced driving ability, the ability for Curiosity's head to capture panoramas without a color filter wheel on one of its 'Mastcam' cameras, a new way for Curisotiy's arm drill to collect rock and regolith samples, and an algorithm to help reduce wear and tear on the rover's wheels. The rover has recently been exploring formations of hardened ridges that were believed to have been created by underground water billions of years ago, finding rocks that were formed by the minerals deposited by ancient water flows and wind. 'A big mystery is why the ridges were hardened into these big patterns and why only here,' Curiosity's project scientist Ashwin Vasavada said earlier this year. 'As we drive on, we'll be studying the ridges and mineral cements to make sure our idea of how they formed is on target.' Solve the daily Crossword
