Minnie Hauk makes it a Classic double with battling Curragh victory

The Frankel filly got the better of stablemate and subsequent Pretty Polly Stakes winner Whirl when landing the Oaks at Epsom in early June and was a prohibitively-priced 2-11 favourite to follow up against six rivals in the Irish equivalent.
Settled in third for much of the mile-and-a-half contest, with fellow Aidan O'Brien-trained runner Island Hopping deployed in a pacesetting role and Oaks and Pretty Polly fourth Wemightakedlongway splitting the pair in second, Minnie Hauk was under pressure to close the gap with two furlongs to go.

Joseph O'Brien's Wemightakedlongway proved a willing adversary, but the red-hot favourite eventually took her measure and passed the post a length and a quarter in front under Ryan Moore to give O'Brien his eighth Irish Oaks success.
'We thought we'd be sitting second and Dylan (Browne McMonagle, on Wemightakedlongway) got the second position, so Ryan had to make a decision, he was either going to sit second on Dylan's inside, in behind Wayne (Lordan, on Island Hopping), or pull back out of it in a way that he wouldn't have been boxed in,' said the Ballydoyle handler.
'Obviously that's a decision Ryan had to make quickly and it was the right decision. It wasn't over-fast. We knew Joseph's filly was a good filly and Dylan gave her a very good ride.
'She (Minnie Hauk) is one of those fillies that you're probably never going to see the best of until the tempo is very strong and very high. She cruises through her races.'
Minnie Hauk is the 2-1 market leader for next month's Yorkshire Oaks with Paddy Power, who also make her the 10-1 joint-favourite for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
O'Brien added: 'The boss (John Magnier) asked Ryan where to go with her and he said to go to the Yorkshire Oaks. The boss said, 'what about if we give her a break and train her for the Vermeille and give her a French Arc prep?'.
'All those things are open and we'll see how she is. I think she can do either of those things, but if she's going to the French trial she'd have to have a couple of easy weeks. Obviously if she's going to York, she wouldn't have those couple of easy weeks.
'She had a very easy race today, I'd say. The tempo wasn't very strong so she should come out of it well. I'd imagine in the next week or so we'll have a fair idea, but they are her two options.
'Looking at her she'd probably love York. She has a big stride and it's a Flat track, too. Obviously the boss will decide with Derrick (Smith) and Michael (Tabor).'

Ex-Rangers star who Steven Gerrard eviscerated for jumping ship for 'bigger wage' is having medical at Wrexham

A former Rangers attacker who received an ear bashing from Steven Gerrard following his hasty departure from Ibrox is expected to sign for Wrexham as a free agent Wrexham are on the brink of signing a former Rangers player who was previously criticised by Steven Gerrard in a candid Zoom call. ‌ Josh Windass is widely expected to undergo a medical on Monday before joining the Welsh club as a free agent. It follows the 31-year-old, son of Hull City legend Dean Windass, leaving Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent amid ongoing issues with the club's failure to pay players' wages promptly. ‌ Windass was one of Wednesday's standout performers in the English Championship last season, netting 13 goals and providing five assists. Rangers were among the clubs said to have courted him over a potential return to Ibrox this summer. ‌ However, Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are believed to have won the race for his signature ahead of their first season in the English second tier in 43 years, according to the BBC. Windass had a two-year stint at Rangers after initially joining in the summer of 2016, scoring 19 goals in 73 appearances. He departed to join Wigan Athletic on transfer deadline day in August 2018 in a deal worth approximately £2.5m. In an interview on the Open Goal podcast in May, Windass disclosed how he hastily headed south after hearing about Wigan's interest from then-Rangers manager Gerrard. He admitted regretting the decision and later received a stern reprimand from the Liverpool icon over the manner of his exit. "It was a bad decision but I just went straight down the motorway," Windass said. "I don't know [why]. I just followed my gut at that moment in time and then a week later [I regretted it]. "We had a Zoom call about six months later because I was going to go back on loan in January and Paul Cook wouldn't let me go. Then Gerrard basically gave me what for on the Zoom call. ‌ "He told me everything that was wrong with me and what I did and how I can improve as a person. He said, 'If we're going to bring you back we need to have an honest conversation,' and I never went back anyway. That was it. It was a bad couple of weeks." Revealing how rapidly he recognised his blunder, he added: "[I knew I'd made the wrong decision] after my first training session. Mick Beale was texting me saying, 'You're making a big mistake.' I was 23. I was stupid. I just wanted a bigger wage." Windass remained at Wigan for two seasons before switching to Wednesday in 2020 and became instrumental as the Owls secured promotion from League One in 2023. His anticipated switch to Wrexham has materialised despite reported interest from Championship rivals Coventry, Derby and Norwich. Wrexham have been active in the transfer window this summer after registering three consecutive promotions. Plymouth forward Ryan Hardie became their first signing, with Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward following suit. The Red Dragons recently splashed out a record-breaking sum to secure left-back Liberato Cacace from Empoli. They have also reportedly had a £1.2m offer accepted for Bolton captain George Thomason, as per the Bolton News.

No doubts for Owen Farrell after late call to Lions tour

Farrell captains the Lions for the first time in Tuesday's match against the First Nations and Pasifika XV at Marvel Stadium, 17 days after arriving in Australia as an injury replacement for Elliot Daly. The former England captain had just finished a testimonial golf day for former Saracens team-mate Jackson Wray when his father Andy called with the invitation to join the squad. Mechanical issues with his car meant he was able to disappear to answer the phone without raising the suspicions of his golf partners. 'When I got asked to come, the first thing that popped into my head was 'yes',' Farrell said. 'It wasn't a discussion. Elliot got a knock and I got a phone call. 'Can you get ready?' and I said 'Yeah.' That was it. I wanted to take the opportunity and I'm glad I'm here.' Until his cameo against AUNZ on July 12, his most recent international appearance was at the 2023 World Cup, after which he stepped back from England to prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing. It was a response to the vitriol that ensued after he was banned for a high tackle against Wales in the build-up to the tournament and the booing he received during England's march to the semi-finals. The 33-year-old struggles to comprehend why he is such a polarising figure but has learned to deal with the darker moments by retaining perspective, while 'making sure I look after myself and giving myself a break'. Ready for our final midweek match of the Tour! 🙌#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 21, 2025 'I understand that times are different now,' he said. 'Sometimes it catches fire and just takes a life of its own and goes wherever it goes and there's momentum behind it. But no, I don't always understand it. 'The good and the bad – both are a poison. That's not to say that it's all bad, but the things that should matter to us as players are the people that matter to us. 'If you go and knock on someone's door and ask them their opinion of how you played at the weekend, you wouldn't really listen to their answer. The people that I think we should listen to are the proper rugby people. Your mates. 'Not to say that people will just pat you on the back because you have people who will tell you how it is, but they'll give you a real answer. If you do that and you're in a good place yourself, then you can deal with it. 'Because there are times where people can say this, that and the other and it just go over your head. And there's times where you're not in the best place of all time and you're almost waiting for something to set you off.' Farrell – the Lions' most experienced player – roomed with the squad's youngest in 20-year-old Henry Pollock when the squad were in Canberra to face the ACT Brumbies. 'He's fascinating. Fascinating. What did I learn about him that I can tell you?! He's brilliant. His energy is nuts. He's always on,' Farrell said of the rising star of English rugby. 'He's always taking the mick out of people. He's got no regard for what anyone's done in the past or anything like that. He looks like he's being himself, which is brilliant.'

RB Leipzig set new lower asking price for Chelsea and Arsenal target Xavi Simons

Arsenal and Chelsea will be able to sign Xavi Simons for a discounted price if they formalise their interest in the wantaway RB Leipzig star. The Netherlands international has made clear his desire to leave the Bundesliga club this summer. RB's position has been rendered weak following their failure to qualify for European football next season. Simons has just two years left on his contract and with no prospect of a contract extension in the offing, Simons' departure is looking increasingly certain. London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are carefully monitoring Simons' situation while Bayern Munich are also understood to be in the mix. The German champions were stunned after missing out on Florian Wirtz who sealed a British record move to Liverpool having opted to leave Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer. RB Leipzig were hoping to make a sizable profit on the €50m (£41.8m) they spent to sign the player earlier this year but, according to Fabrizio Romano, the creative midfielder will now be available for under €70m. Whether that will be a valuation that would tempt Barcelona back into the mix remains to be seen. On Thursday, Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, met with Simons' brother Faustino and the midfielder's advisor, Ali Barat, at a hotel in the city. Barca are unlikely to be able to finance a deal if they were required to compete with the Bundesliga giants and have already seen a move for Nico Williams fall through earlier in the window. In any case, Simons is, according to Bild, minded to join an English side to continue his development having endured something of a nomadic career to this point. The 22-year-old already has the names of Paris Saint-Germain, where he had two different spells, PSV and Leipzig on his CV. More Trending Arsenal have made just one attacking signing so far this summer with Noni Madueke having completed his move from Chelsea last week. A move for Viktor Gyokeres is still hanging in the balance while little progress has been made on a reported move for Eberechi Eze. Real Madrid's Rodrygo is said to remain on Arsenal's radar but his wage demands are likely to prove prohibitive. Chelsea, for their part, have signed two strikers already in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap but are seeking further reinforcements.
