Reading Rockets claim third trophy of the year with victory
The Reading Rockets basketball team is celebrating after its men's team won a third trophy this year. The Rockets beat MK Breakers 102-91 to become playoff champions in Manchester on Sunday. They had defeated MK Breakers to claim the KitKing Trophy in March and won the National Cup in January against Hemel Storm.CEO Matt Johnson praised the club's "amazing" supporters and said they had regularly packed out the 500-capacity Loddon Valley Leisure Centre.
The Azeri head coach who led the team to the victories, Samit Nuruzade, was also praised by the Azeri Embassy in London for his contribution. He is well known in his home country, helped to set up the country's national basketball programme and coached the men's national team between 2016 and 2022.Nuruzade had served as the Rockets' men's team coach between 2010 and 2013, before returning to Berkshire three years ago.The embassy said it hoped the club and Nuruzade would secure "even more victories" following their recent success.
It added to other success for the Division One club, with the Rockets' Justin Hopkins also named the Wilson Player of the Year at the NBL Awards at the weekend.Mr Johnson said the club's community programme, which about 900 people are part of, was critical."We're really competitive but we don't get too caught up on one moment or one team winning one thing," he said."Everyone's welcome. That is the beauty of it and what community sport should be. It should not be the 10 people who are in the men's or women's teams or the wheelchair seniors that are the most important."As a sport and a club our job is to get more people joining [and] get more people enjoying it."

NBA fans seething after Draymond Green's latest violent act: 'Should be banned for life'
NBA fans are fuming at Warriors star Draymond Green for another controversial play, this time, hitting Rockets guard Fred VanVleet in the face while attempting a pass during Sunday's Game 7. In the latest incident where Green gets physical with his opponents outside the NBA rulebook, VanVleet attempted to steal the ball from the Golden State veteran. That led Green to flail his arms, hoping the officials would call a foul on one of Houston's best players for the contact. During Green's sudden movement, his left forearm, inadvertent or not, struck VanVleet in the face. A personal foul was called on VanVleet originally on the play, giving Green what he wished for. After the officials stopped play and looked at the courtside monitor of replays of the action, VanVleet's foul was rescinded and Green was given a technical foul. The latest controversy involving Green has brought those who find him amusing to the forefront. He has also received lots of negative messages on social media as a result. — No Context NBA (@NoContext_NBA_) May 5, 2025 'Draymond Green: dirtiest player ever ... though he bizarrely remains beloved, a wildly popular media star, an advertising dynamo,' longtime sports broadcaster Skip Bayless said. 'Draymond Green is playing the wrong sport,' a fan said on social media. 'I can't believe we might have to watch Draymond Green for an entire series against the Wolves.... it's so unbearable to witness the style of basketball this man plays,' a second supporter stated. 'Draymond Green the only player in the NBA allowed to attack people lmaoooo,' a third added. 'Should be banned for life. This is not basketball,' a fourth concluded. Green finished the game with 16 points and was the Warriors leader in plus-minus at +18 for the game. Although Green's actions cost his team in the second quarter, the Warriors did defeat the Rockets 103-89 in Houston to advance to the Western Conference semifinals. Golden State will face the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round, after they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round in five games. Green will have a huge presence in that series, trying to disrupt Anthony Edwards from taking over.

Buddy Hield leads Warriors past Rockets in Game 7
May 5 - Buddy Hield scored 33 points, Stephen Curry tallied 19 of his 22 points in the second half, and the Golden State Warriors rode a stifling defensive performance to a 103-89 road victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday and a 4-3 victory in this Western Conference first-round series. The seventh-seeded Warriors advanced to play the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves, with Game 1 set for Tuesday in Minneapolis. Their Game 7 win over the Rockets prevented the Warriors from blowing a 3-1 series lead and resulted in their fifth playoff series win over Houston since 2015. Curry came alive when the Warriors needed him most, producing a driving layup and a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter that extended the Golden State lead to 75-62. Hield drilled a 3-pointer with 8:18 left for his first basket of the second half before Curry scored again for an 82-70 lead. Hield shot 12 for 15 overall and 9 for 11 from behind the arc. Curry added 10 rebounds and seven assists to his ledger while Jimmy Butler posted 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Draymond Green added 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. The Warriors repeatedly stuffed the Rockets at the rim. Houston had little success in the paint -- excluding Amen Thompson, who thrived with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting and nine rebounds. Alperen Sengun paired 21 points with 14 rebounds but made only nine of 23 shots. The Rockets shot just 40.5 percent and missed 12 of 18 3-pointers. The Warriors finished 18 for 43 from behind the arc. The Warriors forged a six-point lead in the opening period before the Rockets clawed back, pulling even at 13-13 and securing their first lead when Jalen Green scored through a foul for a 19-17 lead with 1:24 left in the period. But Hield drilled a 42-foot 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and supply the Warriors a 23-19 lead entering the second. The Warriors shot 6 of 12 from behind the arc in the frame and, behind Hield, maintained that shooting touch for the remainder of the first half. Tari Eason shaved a 10-point deficit to 33-29 with a corner 3, only for Hield to respond three and-a-half minutes later with back-to-back 3-pointers that bumped the Golden State lead back to double digits. Curry didn't record his first basket until 33.3 seconds remained in the half, a 3-pointer, and the Warriors carried a 51-39 lead into the intermission on the back of Hield, who scored 22 points in the half.
