2 shootings at Snellville park leave people injured, families traumatized

City leaders in Snellville are vowing to increase security at a popular park after two shootings over the weekend left six people shot. Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson spoke to a witness who said he and his family ran for their lives at Briscoe Park on Saturday. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Another shooting happened Sunday by the softball fields, forcing families to again duck for cover and run. Multiple police officers were making the rounds at the park Monday. 'Stray bullets were flying. My kids could have got hit. I could have got hit. My wife could have got hit,' said witness Paul Williams. Williams thought he was taking his pregnant niece to a quiet park for photos Saturday night. Instead, he found himself running for cover with his group with eight children as gunfire erupted at Briscoe Park in Snellville. 'We got to the car. My kids got in the car. My kids are crying. We are rushing into the car,' he said. He said more than 100 teenagers from multiple high schools had gathered at the park around 9 p.m. He was taking photos near the gazebo when the shooting started just 200 feet away. 'I literally see the muzzle flashes, like real close,' Williams said. Five teenagers between 14 and 17 years old were shot and sent to the hospital. The next afternoon brought another shooting at the same park. Snellville police say a domestic argument led to one man shooting another near the softball fields that also happened in front of families. Snellville police have not announced arrests in either shooting. The city vows to increase patrols, add security, and address lighting and cameras. Williams says the violence has left a lasting impact on his 8-year-old twin daughters. 'They don't want to go outside; they don't want to go back to the park,' he said. Lilburn begins $75 million downtown transformation

Downtown Lilburn began its ambitious transformation on Tuesday as officials and developers broke ground on 'Porch Line,' a $75 million mixed-use project aimed at revitalizing Railroad Avenue. The development, which passed by a narrow 3-2 city council vote in 2023, aims to balance growth with the city's small-town charm in the rapidly expanding Gwinnett County community. 'This changes everything. This is going to be the epicenter of everything that happens socially in our city,' Mayor Johnny Crist told Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The project features 269 luxury apartments in a five-story building with upscale amenities including a sky deck, fitness center, co-working space, pet spa and pool courtyard. An estimated 94% of units will have two bedrooms or fewer, limiting school impact, according to city projections. A six-level parking garage will include 700 spaces, 300 for public use and 400 for residents. The public portion is funded through a $6.7 million non-taxable bond paid by Tax Allocation District revenue. The development includes 20,000 square feet of retail space, featuring a food hall designed to attract restaurants and boutique shops to create a walkable downtown atmosphere. The project faced significant community opposition in 2023, with some residents fearing it would undermine Lilburn's character, while supporters see it as necessary for economic vitality. 'We're not losing our small town charm. This is not the first of 10 big projects,' Crist emphasized. 'Only things are going to go up around it that look like it was historic.' Officially hope for a grand opening by November of 2026. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

On the hook for new city‘s bills, Gwinnett takes legal action

Gwinnett County filed a new legal challenge Friday over a state law it says unfairly forces its taxpayers to cover services for the newly formed city of Mulberry. Channel 2's Matt Johnson reports that Senate Bill 138 is at the center of the fight. The bill requires Gwinnett County to continue providing services like road maintenance, stormwater management and police protection inside Mulberry city limits without reimbursement from the city's residents. County officials argue the law is unconstitutional and would place an unfair financial burden on the rest of Gwinnett's 1 million residents. 'There is a mandate for the county to provide those services at the expense of all county residents who do not live in the city,' said Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] County officials say the law has four big problems for Gwinnett taxpayers: it takes away county legal protections, makes the county pay for Mulberry's stormwater upkeep, leaves them covering some police costs, and leaves them the bill for Mulberry's elections. Hendrickson said the county attempted to negotiate an intergovernmental agreement with Mulberry earlier this year but received no response. Mulberry Mayor Michael Coker pushed back on that claim. He said the city is trying to follow the law and wants the county to work with them, not against them. Coker said the county sent a draft agreement just before a key Senate hearing but included language questioning whether Mulberry was a legitimate city. The law provides a transition period for Mulberry to become fully operational. Mulberry, a city of about 42,000 residents, was approved by voters in 2024. This new lawsuit follows a separate challenge earlier this year, when a judge dismissed Gwinnett's attempt to block Mulberry from forming. This case targets the financial aspects, not the city's existence. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
