Fundraiser held for family of beloved Penn-Trafford football coach who died unexpectedly
TJ Detruf was an assistant coach for the Penn-Trafford freshman football team.
Millie's in Greensburg hosted a fundraiser for the family.
Hempfield football coach Nick Keefer helped serve up ice cream. He coaches Detruf's son, who is Hempfield's starting quarterback.
'It shows how much the Detruf family meant to all these communities with everybody coming in and supporting it, so I think it's a great event, and it shows how much impact that TJ had on everybody and how important the Detrufs are to everyone,' Keefer said.
Detruf will be laid to rest on Friday.
A GoFundMe has also been set up to support the family.

Hempfield quarterback Dom Detruf has changed his jersey number to honor his father, who recently died. T.J. Detruf died suddenly last month, sending shockwaves through parts of Westmoreland County, where he was a 9th grade football coach at Penn-Trafford. In the wake of his death, his son Dom has changed his number from 11 to 18, the same number his dad wore in high school when he played at Jeannette. "After some reflection and a conversation with his mom, Dom felt it was the right thing to do," said Hempfield head coach Nick Keefer. "Changing his number to 18 is his way of honoring his dad and keeping his legacy close every time he steps on the field. It's a powerful gesture from a young man showing strength beyond his years." Last week, a fundraiser was held by football players, cheerleaders, and band members with proceeds benefitting Detruf's family. Keefer says the school community is rallying around Dom and his family, but the surrounding communities have joined in with their support as well. "I think that's the biggest thing that you see in Westmoreland County and even in the Pittsburgh area, the football community is when people rally together," Keefer said. The Penn-Trafford football boosters are also collecting donations to support the Detruf family through a QR code posted on the group's Facebook page.

Penn State's Nick Singleton broke Saquon Barkley's legendary squat record originally appeared on The Sporting News Saquon Barkley's work in the weight room is the stuff of Penn State legend. Move over, Saquon. You've got company. Barkley doesn't hold the Nittany Lions' running back record in the squat anymore. Nick Singleton does, at a best mark of 665 pound. That's what The Athletic's Bruce Feldman shares in his Freaks List rankings for this year, in which Singleton slots at No. 19 in the nation. Feldman also shares that Singleton has outdone Barkley in the bench press, 435 to 405. Singleton has topped out so far at 4.35 seconds in the 40-yard dash to Barkley's 4.33. Singleton ran 172 times last season for 1,099 yards and 12 TDs while catching 41 passes for another 375 yards and five scores. "One half of the superb 1-2 punch in the backfield with Kaytron Allen, the 6-0, 228-pound Singleton returns for his senior year, poised to have his fingerprints all over the program running back record book," Feldman writes. "He already ranks No. 5 in rushing touchdowns with 32 and No. 10 in rushing yards with 2,912 yards. Singleton is within reach of taking over the top spot in both categories." The Nittany Lions are legitimate national title contenders this season because of all the talent they have coming back. To bring back QB Drew Allar with his backfield mates Singleton and Allen is almost unfair. Expectations are sky-high in Happy Valley. Singleton can certainly carry the load. Jim Knowles shares high praise for Zane Durant
Penn State's new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles sounds as though he is impressed with one of Penn State's top defensive linemen, and that has him excited about what could be happening this fall on the line of scrimmage. Knowles says the play of Zane Durant is standing out to him in practices this offseason, with high expectations for the upcoming season. Knowles said Durant suggested Durant is the kind of lineman who will help force the entire defense to be designed in a different way than it could have been. The aggression of Durant excites Knowles, who knows he can design a defense with that level of energy in mind. "[It] changes the way you can play defense," Knowles said, according to Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record. "And Zane's that guy." Durant is entering his senior season at Penn State after opting to return for another season of college football in Happy Valley. Durant was named an honorable mention for All-Big Ten by the conference's coaches and media after starting all 16 games played by Penn State and recording 42 tackles (22 solo) with 11 tackles for loss and three sacks. Durant was named to the preseason watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player) and the Outland Trophy (best interior lineman on offense or defense) for the 2025 season. Durant is one massive piece of a defensive line that also returns Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zuriah Fisher on the edges and Alonzo Ford Jr. as a top option on the inside of Knowles' 4-2-5 defense.
