Close Federal Ties Prove GPS Is A Respected Political Force

MIRI, July 22 (Bernama) -- The close cooperation between Sarawak and the Federal Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim proves that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is a respected and formidable political force.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the appointment of Sarawak native Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as Deputy Prime Minister, along with the presence of several federal ministers from the state, was a significant recognition of Sarawak.
'Never before has a Sarawakian been entrusted with the responsibility of Deputy Prime Minister. This shows that Sarawak under the GPS platform is a respected political power,' he said in his speech at the 62nd Sarawak Day celebration here tonight.
As the head of the GPS government, he said the strong collaboration with the Federal Government would continue in the interest of both the nation and Sarawak, adding that the state's pursuit of prosperity would not hinder national development.
'The increase in Sarawak's revenue, including through the state sales tax, will not reduce the federal revenue as the Federal Government has ample room to boost its income without burdening the people,' he said.
Abang Johari also rebuked claims by certain quarters that Sarawak was being 'excessive' or greedy in asserting its rights, stressing that the demands were based on the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He said GPS would continue fighting for Sarawak's rights through negotiations with the Federal Government, guided by the MA63 framework.
'Sarawak has successfully regained nine rights enshrined under MA63, and efforts will continue to reclaim all those that have been eroded,' he said.
He also reflected on the key decision made by Sarawak's leaders 62 years ago to join in forming Malaysia for greater security and prosperity.

Demonstrations tarnish country's image, threaten VM2026, tour operator group says

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (Mata) has expressed concern over the impact of street demonstrations, particularly in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), saying they threaten public security and tarnish the country's reputation as a safe tourism destination. It stressed that such continued large-scale public demonstrations could hinder efforts to promote VM2026 and attract millions of potential international visitors. "A tarnished national image can directly affect tourist arrivals and foreign investments. "Demonstrations can affect business operations and employment opportunities, and increase the overall cost of living for the people. The people's peace and safety are priorities that cannot be compromised," said its president Datuk Sri Dr Mohd Khalid Harun in a statement on Monday (July 28). Mata also warned that mobilising the people to take to the streets posed a security risk, including potential provocation, conflicts and disorders that could threaten public order. Mata also said that Malaysia, known as a destination for Islamic and nature-based tourism, would face huge challenges if street demonstrations continue and receive negative media exposure globally. Meanwhile, Mohd Khalid also reminded that Malaysia is currently in a strong post-pandemic economic recovery phase. "Stability and peace are the foundation of progress in the tourism industry. Without safety guarantees, tourists will choose other destinations, which are more stable and safer," he said. He emphasised that Mata recognises the people's right to voice their opinions, but stressed that every action must be carried out responsibly without compromising national harmony. "We must work together to maintain stability to ensure VM2026 is successful and the people's economy continues to grow," he said. - Bernama

Anwar begins Jakarta visit for key talks with Prabowo

JAKARTA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is undertaking a two-day working visit to Jakarta today to attend the 13th Annual Consultation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This marks the first consultation between the two leaders since each assumed leadership of their respective countries. Key agenda items include continuing discussions on outstanding issues, as well as addressing regional matters requiring Malaysia's attention as Asean Chair this year. The Prime Minister is accompanied by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg; Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor; Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Malaysia's Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin, said the Annual Consultation is the highest bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Indonesia, aimed at strengthening strategic and comprehensive cooperation. He made the remarks during a media briefing here yesterday. Syed Mohamad Hasrin said the meeting has been held alternately between the two countries since 2006 and reflects a strong political commitment to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors including trade, food security, and education. "Both leaders are expected to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concern," he said. A joint statement will be issued at the end of the consultation session. The last Annual Consultation was held in 2017, making this a timely opportunity for both leaders to reinforce strategic ties and explore new areas of cooperation in the face of current regional and global challenges. Syed Mohamad Hasrin added that the two leaders will also witness the exchange of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) involving land boundary matters, health cooperation, and information and communications technology. During the visit, the prime minister is scheduled to visit the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta at the invitation of Asean secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn. Anwar is also set to deliver a keynote address on Asean in the context of Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship in 2025, highlighting the country's continued commitment to regional integration and the building of the Asean Community. In 2024, Indonesia was Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner globally and second-largest among Asean member states. Bilateral trade increased by 4.5 per cent from RM111.21 billion in 2023 to RM116.29 billion in 2024.
