Beltrami County Historical Society to host 'Women of Law and Order' program
Beltrami County Historical Society
will host a public panel titled, "Beltrami County Women of Law and Order," at noon on Thursday, May 15, at the Beltrami County History Center, 130 Minnesota Ave. SW.
As part of an ongoing series recognizing the significant impact of women in shaping Beltrami County, this panel will feature distinguished women who serve in various roles within the region's law enforcement and public safety sectors, a release said.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand accounts from local female leaders in law enforcement and public safety, engage in discussions, and gain a deeper appreciation for their work.
Panelists include:
* Calandra Allen, Beltrami County Jail Administrator, who oversees the operations of the Beltrami County Jail, managing inmate care and facility improvements. With years of experience in corrections, she has played a key role in addressing capacity challenges and policy changes in the county's correctional system.
* Tabitha Carrigan, Bemidji Police Officer, a dedicated member of the Bemidji Police Department. Known for her outstanding community service and engagement, she has been recognized with the Melissa Schmidt Community Service Award and is actively involved in initiatives like "Coffee with a Cop" and "Heroes and Helpers."
* Katie Nolting, Bemidji City Attorney, who provides legal counsel to the City of Bemidji and oversees municipal legal matters. She has been instrumental in addressing issues like rising misdemeanor cases and city planning concerns while ensuring compliance with legal frameworks.
* Amanda Pedersen, Beltrami County Telecommunications Team Leader, who has been working in 911 dispatching for over 10 years. She oversees the day-to-day operations of the communication center and has been focused on public outreach and education of the 911 system.
Panelists will share insights into their careers, experiences, challenges, and the evolving role of women in maintaining law and order in our community.
"We are honored to highlight the achievements of the women who dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe," Emily Thabes, executive director of the historical society, said in the release. "Their stories provide an important historical perspective while inspiring future generations to serve."
The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Bemidji man charged with 3rd-degree murder after woman's overdose death
Jun. 10—BEMIDJI — A 27-year-old Bemidji man has been charged with third-degree murder for allegedly providing methamphetamine to a woman who died from an overdose at the Northland Apartment building in March. According to the criminal complaint, Joel Kise "did without intent to cause death, proximately caused the death of (the victim) by, directly or indirectly, unlawfully selling or delivering or distributing methamphetamine, a schedule I or II controlled substance." The charge was filed after the property manager at the Northland Apartment building, located at 619 America Ave. NW, contacted the Bemidji Police Department on March 28, requesting a welfare check at one of the apartment units after the resident hadn't been seen by staff for several weeks. According to the property manager, security logs showed that the resident last used her key to access the building on March 5, and security footage showed Kise leaving the resident's unit around 7 a.m. on March 5. Law enforcement entered the unit and located the body of the resident. She appeared to have been dead for a few weeks, the complaint said. While searching the unit, law enforcement found two bank deposit receipts from March 4, showing withdrawals of $350 and $200. Law enforcement subsequently located a container with a pipe that contained burnt residue, as well as Narcan, the complaint said. An autopsy report performed by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman's cause of death as methamphetamine toxicity. A Facebook conversation also showed that the woman discussed purchasing methamphetamine from Kise, the complaint said. Due to Kise's suspected involvement in the woman's death, on June 5, law enforcement acquired a post-Mirandized statement from him. In the statement, Kise admitted that he and the woman smoked methamphetamine in her apartment unit on March 4 and 5. He also admitted that he "hooked up" the woman with methamphetamine in the past, and that the last time he sold her methamphetamine was March 4, the complaint said. Kise's previous convictions include felony fifth-degree drug possession, felony domestic assault, felony fourth-degree assault, and several misdemeanor convictions. Kise's initial appearance is scheduled for Monday, June 16, at the Beltrami County Courthouse.

Frohn Township home suffers major damage after fire
Jun. 2—BEMIDJI — A house in Frohn Township has suffered extensive damage after a fire broke out on Saturday morning in Bemidji. According to a release from Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire along Martin Lane SE in Frohn Township. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a single-story house with heavy smoke and flames visible from the roof and rear of the home, the release said. A nearby vehicle and garage were also on fire. Initial crews pulled a 2 1/2-inch pre-connected attack line and started a transitional attack at the back of the home. As more crews arrived on scene, additional lines were placed in service and aided in the extinguishment of the fires. A total of 24 firefighters and eight pieces of equipment were on the scene for approximately three hours. The home and its contents suffered extensive damage. No injuries have been reported. The fire is currently under investigation, but it appears to have been accidental, the release said. The Bemidji Ambulance Service, Bemidji Police Department, Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office, American Red Cross, and Beltrami Electric assisted the Bemidji Fire Department at the scene.
