Bopara confident of Karachi comeback

Express Tribune21-05-2025

Karachi Kings Head Coach Ravi Bopara remains upbeat about the team's chances in the HBL PSL 10 playoffs, despite a tough loss in their final league match against Islamabad United.
Speaking after the match, Bopara was clear: the team isn't letting one defeat define them.
"It wasn't our best day, but it hasn't shaken our confidence," he said. "This team is a tight unit, we enjoy the good moments together, and we stand by each other in tough times. We're backing ourselves against Lahore Qalandars and aiming to go all the way."
He acknowledged Islamabad United's strong showing but emphasized Karachi's own consistent run in the tournament.
"We played excellent cricket throughout the group stage. For a long time, we were securely in second place. But Islamabad beat us twice - so they deserve that spot," he added.
"They started the tournament on a high with five straight wins. We came close, but now we'll take the hard route, and sometimes that's the more rewarding one."
Ravi Bopara also shared his views on the evolution of emerging players in Pakistan, particularly batters.
"I've been impressed by the emerging batters this season. Usually, we see more fast bowlers, but this time some really strong hitters have come through. They're powerful, they can clear boundaries, which hasn't always been the case with Pakistan batters," he further stated.
"But they're inexperienced. Next year, opponents will come with plans and target their weaknesses. That second season is always tough. We've got to support them, guide them, and help them adapt. That's how we turn them into world-class players."
Karachi Kings now look to regroup quickly and come out firing in the do-or-die clash against Lahore Qalandars on 22 May at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Holder, Russell return for West Indies

SUPERB PERFORMANCE: Islamabad United all-rounder Jason Holder celebrates after taking another Multan Sultans wicket in HBL PSL match on Wednesday night. PHOTO: PCB Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the T20I squads for the upcoming series against England and Ireland, with big names like Jason Holder and Andre Russell making a return. However, Nicholas Pooran will be rested for the tour following his involvement in the IPL. West Indies will face England in three T20Is immediately after their ODI series at The Oval concludes on Tuesday. Following that, they will head to Ireland for another three-match T20I series, although several players and members of the coaching staff—including Russell—will be rested for the Ireland leg. Holder last appeared in a T20I for West Indies in February 2024, having missed the World Cup later that year due to injury. Russell's most recent match was against England in Barbados last November, where an ankle injury ruled him out of the remainder of the series. Sherfane Rutherford returns to the squad after missing the Bangladesh series, while Keacy Carty will only feature in the Ireland T20Is, replacing Brandon King who has been granted leave. New Test captain Roston Chase will also depart after the England series to prepare for Australia's upcoming tour, with former West Indies Under-19 player Jyd Goolie receiving his first senior call-up. Ahead of the first Test against Australia starting June 25, West Indies will hold a Test training camp in Barbados from June 13-21. FIFA pays tribute to Shaheen Shah Afridi among footballing greats

FIFA has paid tribute to Pakistani pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, featuring him alongside football greats Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and Luka Modrić in a social media post celebrating global athletes associated with the iconic number 10 jersey. The FIFA World Cup Instagram account posted an image on Tuesday highlighting Afridi with three of football's biggest stars—Messi, Neymar and Modrić—under the caption, 'The iconic.' While Afridi is known for his performances on the cricket field, his inclusion in the tribute signifies a crossover of global sporting recognition. There is speculation online from fans that the gesture was part of a wider effort to increase fan engagement in Pakistan ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, set to take place in the US. Localised campaigns are reportedly in development to connect with sports fans across different regions. The recognition comes during a high point in Afridi's cricketing career. The 25-year-old fast bowler led Lahore Qalandars to a third HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) title, making him the most successful captain in the league's history. Afridi's Qalandars chased down 202 to defeat Quetta Gladiators in the final at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium. Sikandar Raza secured the win with a six and a four in the final over, finishing the match with one ball to spare. Already the only captain to claim consecutive HBL PSL titles in 2022 and 2023, Afridi now holds the distinction of lifting the trophy three times—more than any other captain in the competition. Captains with most HBL PSL titles: Shaheen Afridi (Lahore Qalandars) – 3 Misbah-ul-Haq (Islamabad United) – 1 Darren Sammy (Peshawar Zalmi) – 1 JP Duminy (Islamabad United) – 1 Sarfaraz Ahmed (Quetta Gladiators) – 1 Imad Wasim (Karachi Kings) – 1 Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans) – 1 Shadab Khan (Islamabad United) – 1 FIFA's post places Afridi in elite company, furthering his rise as a globally recognised athlete across sporting codes.

Pakistan vs Bangladesh: Salman Ali Agha states Pakistan to play 'fearless, not careless' cricket

Pakistan's T20I captain Agha Salman has committed to a bold playing style ahead of the three-match series against Bangladesh, stressing a 'fearless, not careless' mindset as the national side builds toward the T20 World Cup. Addressing the media at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore ahead of the first T20I on Tuesday, Salman explained Pakistan's evolving approach in the shortest format. 'It's not just Islamabad United's style. All over the world, teams are adopting attacking cricket. We're doing the same—fearless, but not careless,' Salman said. He recognised Bangladesh as a skilled opponent and identified captain Litton Das as a key threat. 'Litton Das will be a prize wicket for us. We'll look to limit his scoring,' he noted. Pakistan has made eight changes to the squad that toured New Zealand earlier this year. Salman said the adjustments are aimed at building depth for the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka. 'Based on Sri Lankan conditions, we're forming a core group of 20 to 25 players. It gives us options if injuries happen and helps us find the best XI,' the 31-year-old added. Hasan Nawaz, Player of the Tournament in HBL PSL 10, is among the fresh faces. Salman explained Nawaz's role would remain in the middle order. 'He performed well there in the PSL, so there's no need for him to open.' Pakistan holds a dominant record over Bangladesh in T20Is, with 16 wins from 19 encounters. The remaining three-match series will also be played in Lahore, with fixtures scheduled for 30 May and 1 June. Pakistan squad for Bangladesh T20Is: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Wasim Jr, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Sahibzada Farhan (wicket-keeper), Saim Ayub. Pakistan-Bangladesh T20I series schedule: 28 May – 1st T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore 30 May – 2nd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore 1 June – 3rd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
