SIBU (June 12): Construction work on the new Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at Jalan Orchid here is almost completed with only final touch-ups remaining.
Temple president Manogaran Krishnasamy said everything is expected to be completed by the end of this month, in time for the opening on July 7.
'The construction work was delayed for about four years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are grateful that the temple is nearly complete, accommodating around 400 devotees in Sibu.
'In light of this, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sarawak government, through the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), for their significant assistance, as well as to the public and everyone who has contributed in various ways,' he told The Borneo Post at the site today.
The new ornate building is situated next to the existing temple.
'The temple was built in 1920, which was just a small hut back then. Later on, this existing building was built in 1971,' said Manogaran.
He pointed out the cost of construction was nearly RM2 million from the initial RM1.1 million due to rising building material costs and wages.

Initially, 10 skilled workers from India were involved in the project but as it nears completion, only four remain.
'Each worker earns a salary ranging from RM3,000 to RM4,000. Yes, they are skilled workers, which is why they all have certificates,' he explained.
Manogaran said 16 stone sculptures were recently brought in from India.
'The shipping expenses amounted to nearly RM22,000 for transporting these statues from there to here,' he said.
He added 63 statues were already built in the temple by the specialist workers.
On July 3-7, there will be a final prayer session involving some 30 priests, including six from India.
'For this final prayer session, we estimate to spend almost RM150,000 for expenses such as airfares, accommodation, and other related expenses. That's the reason we require further assistance from Unifor or other organisations.
'This will be followed by the 48-day prayers; each day will cost around RM2,000 totalling RM96,000, which is separate from the expenses of the final prayer,' Manogaran said.

The current double-storey building accommodating the temple will be repurposed.
'We need to use the top floor as a hall and the ground floor will be for the priest's accommodation and related purposes. So, for now, we don't have any plan yet to knock it down.
'Moreover, the building is of significant historical and cultural importance, having been constructed in 1971,' he added. Jalan Orchid lead Manogaran Krishnasamy Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

China, India in talks to resume border trade after 5-year pause

FILE PHOTO: A worker rolls up carpets at an export house in Noida, India, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009. For over three decades, India and China had traded locally produced goods - such as spices, carpets, wooden furniture, cattle fodder, pottery, medicinal plants, electric items, and wool - through three designated points along their 3,488-kilometre disputed Himalayan border. - Bloomberg NEW DELHI: India and China are discussing resuming border trade of locally made goods after more than five years, marking the latest step in a slow but steady effort by the Asian neighbours to ease long-standing tensions, according to officials in New Delhi familiar with the matter. Both sides have proposed restarting trade through designated points on the shared border, and the matter is currently under bilateral discussion, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are still private. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday (Aug 14) that Beijing is "willing to step up communication and coordination with India' on the matter. "Border trade between China and India has long played an important role in improving lives of the two countries' border residents,' it said in a response to a query from Bloomberg News. India's Ministry of External Affairs didn't respond to an email seeking further information. For over three decades, India and China had traded locally produced goods - such as spices, carpets, wooden furniture, cattle fodder, pottery, medicinal plants, electric items, and wool - through three designated points along their 3,488-kilometre disputed Himalayan border. The trade value is relatively small, estimated at just US$3.16 million in 2017-18, according to the most recent government data available. The trading points were shut during the Covid-19 pandemic, which coincided with a sharp decline in relations between the two nations after border clashes in the Himalayas killed 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops. The planned resumption marks another sign that relations between the two neighbours are gradually improving after both sides took steps last year to end border tensions. China and India are set to resume direct flight connections as soon as next month, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, while Beijing has eased curbs on some fertilizer shipments to India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to head to China for the first time in seven years in August to attend a summit of the Beijing-led regional security grouping - the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - and hold a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines. The normalising in ties between the two countries come against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between New Delhi and US President Donald Trump, who has imposed a 50 per cent tariff rate on Indian exports to the US, significantly higher than the duties imposed on regional peers. - Bloomberg

RM14.79 Billion Withdrawn From EPF Flexible Account Since May 2024

Since the introduction of the Flexible Account, or Account 3, in May last year, a total of 4.63 million Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members have made withdrawals amounting to RM14.79 billion as of 30 June 2025. According to the Ministry of Finance, this figure represents 35% of the total 13.2 million members under the age of 55. 'The total savings balance in the Flexible Account currently stands at RM10.16 billion,' the ministry said in a written reply published on the Parliament's website. Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kasim (PN–Arau) had asked when the government would allow the 2025 Special EPF Withdrawal by transferring 30% of Account 1 savings into Account 3 to help the poor cope with the rising cost of living. The Ministry of Finance explained that previous special withdrawals from the Retirement Account (Account 1) were only allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic and were temporary. The EPF's primary mandate as a social protection institution is to ensure sufficient retirement savings to support expenses in old age. In addition, the ministry stressed that withdrawals from Account 1 contradict the EPF's mandate as a trustee of members' retirement savings and are not in line with international standards, which stipulate that governments are responsible for providing nine branches of social protection, including for old-age risks. To balance the long-term, medium-term, and short-term needs of members, the EPF restructured its accounts in May 2024 into three categories – Retirement Account, Sejahtera Account, and Flexible Account – with contribution ratios of 75:15:10, respectively. The Retirement Account (Account 1) is dedicated to old-age savings. The Sejahtera Account (Account 2) allows for pre-retirement withdrawals for purposes such as education, healthcare, and housing. The Flexible Account allows withdrawals at any time, particularly during emergencies. According to the ministry, the government remains sensitive to the people's challenges and has implemented various forms of assistance, such as direct cash aid, targeted subsidies and special incentives, to ease burdens and protect citizens' well-being.

Property firm, directors charged with failure to pay service tax

SEREMBAN: A property management firm and its two board directors have claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to two counts of failing to pay service tax on Thursday (Aug 14). Mat Sham Ahmad, who also represented another director Md Samlan Ahmad and the company Tanjung Tuan Properties Sdn Bhd, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to them before judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam. For the first charge, the company and the duo were charged with failing to pay service tax for the taxable period from May 1 to June 30, 2024 as required under Section 26(4) of the Service Tax Act 2018. This was an offence under Section 26(8), read together with Section 78 (1) of the same legislation, which carries a penalty of up to RM50,000 fine or a jail term not exceeding three years or both upon conviction. For the second charge, they had allegedly failed to do the same for the taxable period from July 1 till Aug 31, 2024. Both offences were allegedly committed on July 31, 2024 at the Customs office in Port Dickson. Customs prosecuting officer Nur Nadia Mohd Rais then asked the court for a mention date for the submission of documents. The accused were unrepresented. Judge Mohamad Kamil fixed Oct 16 for mention.
