Who Wants to be a Millionaire £250k winner thanks former teacher
A man who won £250,000 on ITV quiz show Who Wants to to be a Millionaire has thanked his science teacher as the crucial question was based on the periodic table.Jack Soley, from Swindon, was in Ben Cobbold's class 15 years ago, and said: "Ben was the one who got me into chemistry."Mr Soley was asked by host Jeremy Clarkson what word could be spelled by combining symbols from the periodic table - the answer was physics."I think I could say that's one of the impacts I never thought I'd have on a student. It wasn't quite in my lesson plan at the time," said Mr Cobbold.
Mr Cobbold, who is now the assistant head teacher at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham, taught Mr Soley at Swindon Academy.Speaking to his former teacher on BBC Radio Wiltshire, Mr Soley said: "Thank you sir - I can't thank you enough if I'm honest."You really got me into learning science - it's just something that stuck with me."
Mr Cobbold said he thought Jack had done better on the question than he could have."I'm just really pleased for Jack. I've been teaching science now for 21 years - hopefully some of the students I teach now will take my lessons more seriously!" he said."I'm smiling from ear to ear."
Mr Soley was on the most recent show to air on 16 March, but it had been recorded some time ago, so he had to keep his win a secret for months - something he found tricky."It was just surreal. It still hasn't sunk in. It doesn't feel quite right, but I've had a great time nonetheless," he said."I might wake up in a minute."
He said he did not sleep much the night before the show and was "on edge" for most of the day it was recorded.Mr Soley added he and his fiancé are no stranger to quizzes and usually take part in one every week.Having won the £250,000 he decided not to try for the £500,000 prize as he was not sure of the answer.

This week's episode sees Olivia joined by The Traitors legend Amanda Lovett. Amanda, who appeared in series one of the smash-hit BBC show, is shown getting a neck and lower facelift. In a clip shared by ITV on Instagram, she tells Olivia beforehand: "I'm going to have a new face and neck by this evening." The star also discussed her procedure in an exclusive chat with Fabulous. Amanda said: 'I was looking at myself on the camera, and I kept seeing myself at all these different angles that I had never seen before, as it's so different to having a picture taken. 'I noticed my face and neck were just getting saggier and saggier. 'I started to think about needing to wear a scarf or polo necks just to hide this area of my body that I didn't like." Upon arriving in The Traitors castle in 2022, host Claudia Winkleman selected Amanda to become a Traitor. She joined Wilfred Webster and Alyssa Chan as the trio worked against their fellow contestants. I was minutes away from winning The Traitors & masterminded infamous 'Red Breakfast'... now I've quit my job after starring in hit BBC show From the moment Amanda became one of the Traitors, fans loved her - thanks to her devious gameplay yet cheerful and friendly accent. Although she didn't manage to make it to the end of the series, thanks to fellow Traitor Wilfred turning on her so close to the final, she's had the last laugh. Speaking exclusively to The Sun last year, Amanda shared: 'I don't think any of us expected The Traitors to be as big as it was. "We all hoped that the public would like it but it was just phenomenal, the way it blew up over the Christmas and New Year. How does The Traitors work and who hosts it? The Traitors first launched in the UK in 2022, after the Dutch format was acquired by the BBC. Claudia Winkleman is the show's host, and has now hosted all three series to date. How does it work? It is a reality game show that involves 22 contestants, and some of them are chosen to be The Traitors. The Traitors sees a group of contestants taking part in "the ultimate game of truth and deception". The group of contestants are competing for the chance to walk away with a huge cash prize. While navigating through a series of challenges, the team are also tasked with figuring out who the Traitors are in the group (usually three contestants). Each night, the Traitors gather to "eliminate" one of the Faithful, removing them from the competition Meanwhile, the traitors can be "banished" if they're successfully outed as a traitor by a faithful. The winners of the show are either the Traitor who remains undetected or the Faithfuls if they successfully eliminate all the Traitors. The prize sees the winner could get £120K. 'So life's been really busy for me. ' I gave up my estate agency job because I had so many opportunities that came my way, and I've just travelled the UK this year, meeting lots of different people. "I've gone to other cities, done some TV, been involved in lots of different projects. 'These are things I never dreamt of doing, but the doors the show has opened to me have been fantastic.' 5 The Price of Perfection explores plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures Credit: Instagram / itv
