Son of Boko Haram founder arrested in Chad: Report
A young son of Boko Haram's founder has been arrested in Chad, where he was allegedly leading a jihadist cell, according to both an intelligence source and a former insurgent. Chadian police confirmed having arrested six Boko Haram members but could not say if one of them was the older Yusuf's son.(X) Muslim Mohammed Yusuf was arrested alongside five other suspected members of the movement, which was founded in neighbouring Nigeria a few years before his birth by his father, radical preacher Mohammed Yusuf. The Islamist group has sown terror around the Lake Chad region for around 15 years, and has mounted increasingly brazen attacks on villages and military bases in recent months. Chadian police confirmed having arrested six Boko Haram members but could not say if one of them was the older Yusuf's son. A Nigerian intelligence source in the Lake Chad region told AFP at the weekend that they received a report of the arrest of a six-man jihadist cell in Chad. "The team was headed by Muslim, the youngest son of the late Boko Haram founder," said the source. The source however said that the cell belonged to the Islamic State West Africa Province group, a rival offshoot which splintered off from Boko Haram over ideological disagreements. The source added that Yusuf was an infant when his father was killed in 2009 during a military crackdown on Boko Haram that left some 800 people dead, giving his age as 18. Photos seen by AFP after the arrests in Chad, show a young, short and slender man in a blue tracksuit -- with a striking resemblance to Yusuf -- standing next to far older men. Yusuf, who goes by the alias Abdrahman Mahamat Abdoulaye, is the younger brother of ISWAP leader Habib Yusuf, alias Abu Mus'ab Al-Barnawi. A former lieutenant of Yusuf's father, who has denounced Boko Haram but has knowledge of the group's inner workings, also said Yusuf had been arrested. "He and the team were arrested by Chadian security. They are six in number," he told AFP. Chadian police said they had arrested "bandits who operate in the city... they are undocumented, they are members of Boko Haram", police spokesman Paul Manga told AFP from N'djamena. He said the cell was arrested "a few months ago". Nigeria's counter-terrorism centre and the national intelligence service did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.

Welfare schemes not reaching minority groups: YSRCP leader
Mohammed Nasir, YSR Congress Party State official spokesperson, on Monday urged the State government to resolve petitions from members of the Muslim community as many eligible persons have reportedly been denied social security pensions, ration cards, and the Talliki Vandanam and other schemes. Speaking to media, he said that people belonging to the minority communities were being treated as second-class citizens in Andhra Pradesh after the formation of the NDA government in the State. Mr. Nasir who was former director of AP Minorities Corporation met former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in Vijayawada, a couple of days ago and thanked Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy for appointing him as the official spokesperson of the minority wing. 'The ruling Telugu Desam Party, in alliance with the BJP, is discriminating in the selection of beneficiaries for the government schemes. Hundreds of Muslims women are visiting government offices to get the benefits of Talliki Vandanam and social security pensions, but in vain,' said He asked the government to conduct a socioeconomic survey of the 40 lakh Muslims and other marginalised groups in the State to known their plight and take corrective measures to ensure they also receive the benefits on par with other sections of society.

Assam: Second phase of eviction at Rengma forest begins
Golaghat , The Assam government on Monday started the second phase of eviction inside Rangma reserve forest in Golaghat district to remove encroachments from around 26 hectares of land, displacing 41 families, an official statement said. Assam: Second phase of eviction at Rengma forest begins The administration had completed a five-day first phase of the massive eviction drive at Rengma in Uriamghat along the Assam-Nagaland inter-state boundary in Sarupathar sub-division on August 2 and cleared around 9,000 bighas of land of encroachments, affecting around 1,500 families, mostly from the Muslim community. "The second phase of the eviction drive in the Rengma reserve forest commenced today, focusing on encroached areas in Haldibari," the statement said. During the exercise, the authority removed 41 households, demolished 65 illegal structures and cleared nearly 26 hectares of notified forest land from encroachments, it added. The operation, carried out by the Forest Department in close coordination with the Golaghat district administration and Assam Police, is part of the state government's continued effort to remove encroachments from the forests. "The action followed the issuance of due notices to the occupants and every step was executed in compliance with prevailing legal norms and environmental safeguards," the administration claimed in the statement. The drive was monitored by senior functionaries, including Special Chief Secretary M K Yadava, and senior representatives from the Forest Department, CRPF, Assam Police and district administration. "During the earlier phase, extensive drives were carried out across stretches of both the Rengma and Doyang reserve forests, successfully clearing large tracts of land from encroachments. In total, more than 1,400 hectares of protected forest land were reclaimed in that phase," the statement said. The government also carried out an eviction drive at Nambor South reserve forest in Golaghat earlier this month and cleared alleged encroachment from nearly 1,000 bighas of forest land, displacing more than 350 families. "This initiative is part of the Assam government's sustained mission to restore encroached forest land, strengthen ecological security and safeguard the integrity of reserved forests across the state," it added.
