GWM plans on beating Ferrari in the supercar game
Hundreds of millions of Yuan later, and claiming they have managed to overcome challenges other performance automakers haven't, Great Wall Motor (GWM) is now planning on rivalling the likes of Ferrari. Despite its dominance in the electric vehicle race, China isn't ready to put the internal combustion engine out to pasture just yet.

GWM, better known for bakkies and burly SUVs, has unveiled a new twin-turbo 4.0-litre petrol V8 and is developing a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel — signs that the old-school grunt still has a place in its future for many global markets, like South Africa. But that isn't exactly new news since being revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show, the real headline here is that the Chinese automaker is cooking up a Ferrari-beating supercar.

In an eyebrow-raising interview posted on Weibo (China's version of X), GWM's chief technology officer Wu Huixiao claimed the still-secret sports car would be 'better than a Ferrari'. Bold words from a brand whose most recognisable product abroad might be the Funky Cat hatchback. But Huixiao insists GWM's Baoding HQ has been quietly developing the project for five years, studying rivals closely.
GWM has reportedly brought in Nürburgring specialists to advise on chassis dynamics. But it hasn't been smooth sailing and Huixiao admitted to difficulties with producing the car's carbon fibre tub, and escalating costs have delayed its debut. The powertrain also remains a mystery. That new V8 is reportedly too large for the application, leaving options open: Either an adapted smaller engine or something entirely new.

With leaps and bounds made in electrification, some early speculation points towards a plug-in hybrid setup. The goal of this according to Huixiao is a car that 'spikes adrenaline, causes an explosion of hormones, and dopamine'. All PR jargon at the expense of some precarious Chinese to English translations aside, it seems as though the next segment the Chinese automaker has set its sights on is the holy grail of them all. It may be a tall order expecting buyers wanting pinnacle performance to trade their Maranello steed in exchange for one from Baoding, but time will tell if the Chinese automaker can put its money where its mouth is…

S&P cuts outlook on Volvo over tariffs, China competition
S&P on Friday lowered the outlook for its BB+ credit rating on Volvo Cars to "negative" from "stable", saying US tariffs and tougher competition in China were hurting the company's growth prospects. The Sweden-based carmaker, majority-owned by China's Geely, last month withdrew its earnings guidance and announced cost cuts which will include laying off about 3,000 mostly white-collar workers amid a slowdown in demand. "The negative outlook on Volvo Cars reflects its large exposure to US import tariffs and the increasing marginalisation in the Chinese market," S&P said. "We expect Volvo Cars' profitability and cash generation after investments to come under pressure in 2025-2026, partly alleviated by a substantial cost reduction programme." The USs represented 16% of Volvo Cars sales in 2024, while China accounted for 20%. Volvo Cars produces only one of its models in the US, and relies on imports for the rest, leaving the company more exposed to US tariffs than many of its European peers. S&P said a proposed 2027 US ban on carmakers controlled by a Chinese entity also weighed on the outlook. In the most recent twist in the trade turmoil sparked by President Donald Trump, a US court on Thursday temporarily reinstated sweeping new tariffs, a day after another US court had ordered an immediate block on them.

China says 'firmly rejects' US claim of violating tariff deal
BEIJING - China said Monday it "firmly rejects" claims by the United States that it had violated a deal to lower crippling tariffs between the world's two largest economies. Beijing and Washington last month agreed to temporarily slash staggeringly high levies on each other for 90 days after talks between top officials in Geneva. But US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Beijing was "slow-rolling the deal", in comments to "Fox News Sunday". Beijing hit back Monday, saying Washington "has made bogus charges and unreasonably accused China of violating the consensus, which is seriously contrary to the facts". "China firmly rejects these unreasonable accusations," its commerce ministry said in a statement. US President Donald Trump said last week that China had "totally violated" the deal, without providing details. But Beijing's commerce ministry said it "has been firm in safeguarding its rights and interests, and sincere in implementing the consensus". Washington "has successively introduced a number of discriminatory restrictive measures against China", it said, citing export controls on artificial intelligence chips and revoking Chinese student visas in the United States. "We urge the US to meet China halfway, immediately correct its wrongful actions, and jointly uphold the consensus from the Geneva trade talks," the ministry said. If not, "China will continue to resolutely take strong measures to uphold its legitimate rights and interests," it added.

'Proud' Piastri extends championship lead with Spanish GP victory
Oscar Piastri drove with exemplary calm and control in a torrid race on Sunday to beat rival and team-mate Lando Norris as McLaren claimed a first Spanish Grand Prix victory since 2005 with a resounding 1-2 triumph. The 24-year-old Australian came home 2.4 seconds clear of Norris to extend his lead in the drivers' championship to 10 points with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finishing third after a dramatic finale. Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull went for a three-stop strategy that resulted in him losing third place in the final laps before being handed a 10-second penalty for crashing into Mercedes' George Russell who finished fourth. It was Piastri's fifth win of the season and the seventh win of his career – and his eighth consecutive podium finish for McLaren, a feat that had only been achieved before by three-time champion Ayrton Senna and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Nico Hulkenberg was fifth, from 15th on the grid, for Sauber ahead of Hamilton in a Ferrari, Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Two-time champion and local hero Fernando Alonso finished ninth for Aston Martin with Verstappen classified 10th after his bruising late incidents which prompted 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg to suggest he deserved to be black-flagged and disqualified. - 'Great weekend' - "It was a bit of a surprise to see Max try a three-stop and it nearly worked for him," said Piastri.
