Pokémon Sleep's sleep-promoting eats step into the real world with Japanese nutritionist recipes

Recipes let you eat like Snorlax so you can sleep like Snorlax.
The title of Pokémon Sleep is simultaneously highly accurate and slightly misleading. Part video game and part wellness app, Pokémon Sleep wants to promote healthy sleep habits, which is why players are given a Snorlax, the sleepiest Pokémon species to take care of. But even Snorlax doesn't sleep for 24 hours a day, and during its waking moments it makes friends with other Pocket Monsters and eats meals that you prepare for it.
Now there's a way to bring the dishes of Pokémon Sleep to your own real-world table, thanks to a partnership between the game, the makers of Japanese nutrition planning app Asken, and the University of Tsukuba. Research conducted by the group determined that insufficient intakes of protein, carbohydrates, and fiber can all negatively impact your quality of sleep, and so they've developed real-world recipes for dishes from Pokémon Sleep to give you the balanced diet necessary for a good night's sleep.
Four in-game dishes were selected, starting with the above-pictured Dream Eater Butter Curry. To make the rice, you'll need…
● Rice: 180 milliliters (6.1 ounces) ● Turmeric powder: 1/2 teaspoon
● Salted butter : 10 grams (0.4 ounces)
…and to make the roux and toppings the ingredients are…
● Skinless chicken thigh: 180 grams (6.3 ounces) chopped into bite-sized pieces ● Yogurt: 100 grams (3.5 ounces) ● Grated ginger: 1 teaspoon ● Grated garlic: 1/2 teaspoon ● Curry powder: 2 tablespoons ● Onion: 100 grams (3.5 ounces), minced ● Carrots: 40 grams (1.4 ounces), chopped ● Potatoes: 150 grams (5,3 ounces), chopped ● Salted butter: 15 grams (0.5 ounces) ● Milk: 4 tablespoons ● 2 pieces of dark chocolate (6 grams [0.2 ounces]), one piece to be minced as decoration ● Boiled sliced canned tomatoes: 400 grams (14.1 ounces) ● Water: 50 milliliters (1.7 ounces) ● Chicken soup stock: 1 teaspoon ● Salt: 1/2 teaspoon ● Pepper: A small amount ● Milk: 1 teaspoon ● Baby leaf: 10 grams (0.4 ounces)
● Cherry tomato: 1/4 slice
Those amounts are enough for two servings, and once you've got them all assembled, here's what you need to do:
1. Soak the rice, then add the turmeric and butter and cook them together in a rice cooker.
2. Place the chicken ginger, garlic, and curry powder in a plastic bag and let sit for 20 minutes.
3. Put 15 grams of butter in a pot and heat with a medium flame, then add the onions and cook until tender. Add the carrots and potatoes and cook until they are completely coated with oil.
4. Mix the tomatoes, water, chicken stock, salt, and pepper into the pot. Once the mixture comes to a boil cover and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes. Turn off heat and add dark chocolate, stirring until it melts in. Cook again on low heat for roughly 20 minutes to reduce amount of liquid. Stir in 4 tablespoons milk.
5. Place finished turmeric rice and curry on plate. Artfully add baby leaf, cherry tomato, milk, and dark chocolate.
In addition to being rich in sleep-promoting protein and carbohydrates, Asken says the Dream Eater Butter Curry's tomatoes serve as a source of potassium which helps with sodium excretion, adding another healthy aspect to the meal.

By Blair Aitken and Rebecca Rothman We've all been there. The pounding headache, relentless nausea, and the kind of tired no amount of coffee can fix. Hangovers are a reminder that last night's fun comes at a cost. These days, hangovers aren't just something to complain about over a greasy breakfast – they're big business. The global market for hangover cures is now valued at $2.29 billion and projected to reach $6.71 billion by 2032. These products – ranging from capsules to drinks to patches – appear to be popular. Nearly 70% of drinkers say they would buy an effective hangover remedy. But any scientific evidence they work is thin. First, what causes hangovers? Despite years of research, the exact cause of a hangover is still unclear. But we know several biological processes contribute to that hungover feeling. 1. Your immune system is in overdrive When you drink, your body treats alcohol like a threat. It breaks alcohol down into acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct that triggers an immune response, releasing inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. These chemicals are the same ones your body uses to fight infections, which is why a hangover can feel eerily similar to being sick. 2. You're dehydrated Alcohol blocks vasopressin, a hormone that helps the body retain water. Without it, you make more frequent trips to the bathroom and lose more fluid than you take in, leading to thirst, dry mouth, and the classic hangover headache. 3. Your sleep takes a hit Although alcohol might help you fall asleep faster, it disrupts your natural sleep pattern. You get more deep sleep early on, but less rapid eye movement (REM) and light sleep stages. As the alcohol wears off, your brain rebounds with more REM sleep and frequent wake ups, leaving you groggy and cognitively impaired the next day. 4. Your brain is recalibrating Alcohol disrupts several brain chemicals. It boosts gamma-aminobutyric acid, a calming neurotransmitter, and suppresses glutamate, which normally keeps you stimulated and alert. That's part of why drinking feels relaxing. But as your body tries to rebalance, you may be left feeling anxious or irritable. What's in hangover 'remedies'? Modern hangover remedies have evolved well beyond the 'hair of the dog'. You've got liver-protecting capsules, electrolyte-packed drinks, vitamin patches for while you party, and strips that dissolve on your tongue – all with the goal of accelerating recovery. A 2025 analysis which looked at hangover products marketed in Australia found B vitamins and sodium were the most common ingredients, appearing in nearly half of all products reviewed. B vitamins are often included based on the idea alcohol depletes them, while sodium is thought to support rehydration. However, there's little solid evidence that either significantly improves hangover symptoms in otherwise healthy people. Natural ingredients such as ginger and dihydromyricetin, a compound extracted from the Japanese raisin tree, were also popular, featuring in more than one-quarter and one-third of products respectively. Ginger is widely used to treat nausea and vomiting, and there's some evidence to support its effectiveness for gastrointestinal symptoms. However, this is not specific to hangovers. Dihydromyricetin has been marketed as a revolutionary hangover fighter, with claims it helps the liver process alcohol more efficiently. Yet, when tested under controlled conditions, it failed to reduce hangover severity more than a placebo. Other popular ingredients show similarly underwhelming results. The amino acid L-cysteine has shown some benefits in one study, but the sample was too small to draw firm conclusions. Another product often marketed as a hangover remedy is Korean pear juice. If consumed before drinking, it may help the body break down alcohol more efficiently. A 2013 study found it slightly lowered blood alcohol levels and improved focus. However the effects were small, and it offered little benefit once a hangover had already set in. Another natural remedy that has shown some promise is red ginseng. One study found participants who drank red ginseng extract after alcohol were less thirsty, fatigued, had fewer stomach aches, and even had improved memory compared to people who drank just plain water. Mouse trials of ginseng have also shown consistent benefits across symptoms and biological markers of alcohol-related stress. How about IV drips and vitamin patches? Not all remedies come in pill or plant form. IV drips, often marketed as wellness boosters for energy, immunity, and even glowing skin, are now offered at clinics and 'drip bars' for hangovers too. But unless you're severely dehydrated, there's little evidence these pricey infusions work any better than water, food and rest. Vitamin patches are also trending, claiming to deliver nutrients through the skin while bypassing digestion. But again, studies don't necessarily support this. Japanese Scientists Develop Artificial Blood Compatible With All Blood Types

A critical component of healthcare, blood transfusions play a vital role in saving lives around the globe every day. Maintaining an adequate blood supply, though, is no easy task, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The demand for O – negative blood — the universal donor type — often exceeds supply and donations have a limited shelf life. Looking to address the issue are a group of Japanese scientists led by Hiromi Sakai at Nara Medical University . They've developed a new type of artificial blood that can be used in patients of any blood type. The artificial blood is created by extracting hemoglobin — a protein containing iron that facilitates the transportation of oxygen in red blood cells — from expired donor blood. It is then encased in a protective shell to create stable, virus-free artificial red blood cells. As these artificial cells have no blood type, there is no need for compatibility testing. The synthetic blood can reportedly be stored for up to two years at room temperature and five years under refrigeration. That is a significant improvement over donated red blood cells, which can only be stored under refrigeration for a maximum of 42 days . Artificial Blood Trials Small-scale studies began in 2022. Three groups of four healthy male volunteers aged 20 to 50 received a single intravenous injection of hemoglobin vesicles — artificial oxygen carriers that mimic the structure of red blood cells — in increasing amounts, up to 100 milliliters. While some participants experienced mild side effects, there were no significant changes in vital signs, including blood pressure. Building on that success, Sakai announced that his team was accelerating the process last July. In March, it started administering between 100 and 400 milliliters of the artificial blood cell solution to volunteers. If no side effects are confirmed, the trial will shift to examin ing the treatment's efficacy and safety. It aims to put the artificial red blood cells into practical use by around 2030. While these studies are taking place, Professor Teruyuki Komatsu of Chuo University's Faculty of Science and Engineering is also working on the development of artificial oxygen carriers, using albumin-encased hemoglobin to stabilize blood pressure and treat conditions like hemorrhage and stroke. So far, animal studies have shown promising results. As a result, researchers are now eager to move to human trials. The center in Jiyugaoka looks like a cafe. It is clean and stylish, and it is safe for seniors to move around. In one cooking class, seniors made five different dishes such as fish hamburgers, chicken with edamame beans, rice with seafood, potato soup, and salad. Everyone enjoyed cooking together. Some seniors could even cook while sitting in wheelchairs. Midori Tai, 92, chopped vegetables quickly. She said, "My husband had a restaurant. I learned cooking from watching him." Misako Mori, 88, was happy cooking many kinds of food. She said, "At home, I make simple food. Here, there are many things to cook. It's fun." Noriko Kageyama, 85, uses a wheelchair. She said, "I can cook even when sitting. I have a good time cooking and laughing with others." Seniors feel proud because real chefs teach them cooking. Preparing food also helps seniors' bodies and minds to stay healthy. The recipes have extra steps to help seniors practice cooking skills. After class, seniors can take food home for dinner or share with their families. Nanairo Cooking Studio opened its first center in 2015. Staff member Misako Kaminaga said, "Cooking helps seniors enjoy their day. They can be active, learn new things, and feel happy making something good."
