Seasonal trail closures begin soon at Valley of Fire Park

Yahoo16-04-2025

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — In an effort to protect hikers and first responders from the dangers of extreme desert heat, Valley of Fire State Park will begin its seasonal trail closures next month.
Park officials said the closures are a critical step to prevent life-threatening incidents, which resulted in numerous search and rescue operations during past summer seasons. The high temperatures and hazardous conditions that define Nevada's hottest months pose serious risks to visitors, park personnel, and emergency responders.
A hiker died on April 9 on the Arizona Hot Springs Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and a highly publicized rescue of 28 hikers happened the following day. That trail has since reopened.
The following popular trails will be closed starting May 15 through Oct. 1:
Fire Wave
Seven Wonders Loop
Pastel Canyon Prospect
Arrowhead
Pinnacles
White Domes
Charlie Springs
Park rangers will be strictly enforcing the trail shutdowns, and those who ignore the restrictions may face citations.

Why is the air quality bad in central Ohio?

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Some residents in central Ohio may notice lower air quality and haze on Wednesday. The reduced air quality is due to smoke from wildfires in Canada. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the AQI for Columbus was at 106, which falls into the orange category and is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. It is recommended that people with heart or lung disease, as well as older adults, children and teens limit time outside, and to choose activities like walking instead of running. A rare COVID-19 strain disappeared overnight. We still don't know which Ohioan had it An AQI between 51-100 (yellow) could pose problems for people who are unusually sensitive to ozone, according to the National Weather Service. An AQI between 100 and 150 (orange) could pose problems for sensitive groups like those with asthma, older adults, children and teens. If the AQI reaches 100-150, even healthy people are encouraged to limit outdoor activities to shorter and less intense activities. Anything over 151 (red, purple and maroon) could create health impacts for the general public. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. A sidewalk will be constructed on the west side of Springfield Avenue to the entrance of the parking lot of Firestone Recreational Park. A second sidewalk project will begin at the existing sidewalk on the south side of East Park Avenue at the Springfield Road intersection to Whispering Pines Villas, just west of the intersection with State Route 14. Those projects are expected to be constructed in 2028. The money is part of the state's Transportation Alternative Program. This round of funding will support 44 projects in 33 counties.
