Seasonal trail closures begin soon at Valley of Fire Park
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — In an effort to protect hikers and first responders from the dangers of extreme desert heat, Valley of Fire State Park will begin its seasonal trail closures next month.
Park officials said the closures are a critical step to prevent life-threatening incidents, which resulted in numerous search and rescue operations during past summer seasons. The high temperatures and hazardous conditions that define Nevada's hottest months pose serious risks to visitors, park personnel, and emergency responders.
A hiker died on April 9 on the Arizona Hot Springs Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and a highly publicized rescue of 28 hikers happened the following day. That trail has since reopened.
The following popular trails will be closed starting May 15 through Oct. 1:
Fire Wave
Seven Wonders Loop
Pastel Canyon Prospect
Arrowhead
Pinnacles
White Domes
Charlie Springs
Park rangers will be strictly enforcing the trail shutdowns, and those who ignore the restrictions may face citations.
